Had the pleasure to meet this man more than once. Pleasure to chat with him. Just listening to him talk about Secretariat, gave me chills. I was 13 yrs old glued to the TV watching the derby. I cried. Even at 13 I knew I had just seen something amazing.

Ron Turcotte was the best jockey Secretariat could have had, he brought out the best in him, protected him when he knew he wasn't in the best shape and yet they entered him in races he shouldn't have run in, he knew he had the best horse that he had seen and he let him run to the end because he knew he would make history and he did not stop in the stirrups with 100m to go, even if he had a big advantage, he went with everything until the end, that is the merit of this man who he rode on the back of the best thoroughbred that ever lived.

This man just got on this gentle giant and whispered to him let’s go fast. I have never seen a horse shoot out of a cannon have way through a race like him. He would reach down for another gear that no other horse had. For the record Sham was an incredible horse he just raced against the Superman of the horse breed.

I Was Astounded By His Spectacular Winning Performance And The Massive Size Of His Neck. I Believe That Eddie Maple Rode Him That Day At Woodbine Racetrack Back In 1973. Greatest Race Horse Of All Time....Many Will Agree. What A Gift To Behold. I Will Always Remember His Performance. A Truly Gifted Champion. Thanks for your anecdote. How lucky you were to see Secretariat in person!! He performed so beautifully on that awful weather day. You’re right, Eddie Maple rode him, as Ron T. was on suspension, but Ron was there to witness the race. I’ve watched the wonderful documentary about it several times, “Big Red’s Last Race.” I’ll bet you have too 🤗 I’m hoping to go see the traveling exhibition that honors Big Red’s 50th Triple Crown Anniv., when it’s at Belmont Park or after, when it goes to Saratoga. I understand the exhibit then will be on permanent display at the US Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame. So, I will get to see it at some time! Be well & enjoy your Summer/Fall at the races.

Also...I didn't know that Ron Turcotte was actually there at Woodbine to watch Secretariat run..thanks for that tid-bit...we had his brother Noel riding as a regular jockey during that time. Here's what I'm kicking my butt about....I placed two $2 win bets on Secretariat...the tickets read "Big Red"...for a keepsake...however since I was tapped out completely and since there was another race to run....I actually was an Idiot and cashed them for $4.80 and wagered on the race. Being Impatient Was And Is Still My Achilles Heel....(you can call me Fool #1 or Mr Heel.). Thanks

I think so many people wished they could be but had the most respect for Ron being one with Secretariat and I think Secretariat ran not only naturally but out of a love for Ronnie. I can't remember in watching all the film s on these two where Ronnie really ever or rarely used the whip on Secretariat.

He would chirp at Big Red or show him the whip. Secratariats first rider hit him and he ducked into another horse. Penny Chenery did not like her horses being hit.

God I'm so jealous I was not born yet to witness secretariat. I get goosebumps and chills everytime I watch secretariat races. My dad said kt was the single greatest sports moment in history with what he did in Preakness and Belmont. I'm 37 and absolutely love watching anything about secretariat. Most people don't really understand what he did. They just think oh he won by a whole lot. I try and tell them if u scale it to humans, it's like winning a 100 yrd dash by 40 or 50 yards. It just doesn't happen and It never will again. The perfect horse. God's horse.
