I have had osteoarthritis of both knees for 16 years now. My orthopaedic doctor at first recommended physiotherapy to reduce the swelling and inflammation. After that I was given a set of exercises to strengthen my leg muscles that support the knees, to do daily for the rest of my life. As they got easier, I added ankle weights. Now I have graduated to 1.5 kg on each ankle. I am now 76 years old, go a few times a year on mountain treks (using knee supports) and I am pain free. It was also important to keep my weight down. I follow a very low carbohydrate, vegetarian diet with eggs and dairy. I avoid fruit because of the carbohydrate content and vegetables that grow underground. I lost 10 kg and now I'm at an acceptable weight. This diet is now normal for me. Discipline is preferable to pain!

@@ax1066a-ghd2 The Keto diet is the most effective to lose weight. You don't have to overdo the fats. Just keep the carbohydrates as low as you can go. It takes a few days for the body to adjust. You may get a mild headache, but when you see the weight dropping away, that in itself is motivating. You can exercise till the cows come home but you will not be able to maintain that level for long. So go very low Carb and see the effect.

I’ve been doing physical therapy for about 2 months to help my knees. Strengthening quads, STRETCHING, strengthening hip muscles has really helped. You don’t have to jump right to knee replacement. Good luck, everyone.

I am 33 years old and work as a nurse. Two months ago I suddenly developed severe pain in both my knees. The doctor said I had osteoarthritis (grade 3 (moderate) in both knees, but I never noticed anything. I have resigned myself to the fact that I will soon be walking around with two knee replacements :(. The pain is very difficult to bear, even with painkillers. I'm still so young and just don't know what to do. I will soon no longer be able to do my job as it is very physically demanding. My doctor told me that knee prostheses don't last as long in young people (because young people are more active). My life is hell, I'm afraid of my future. Maybe one day a miracle will happen and the much hoped-for healing will come for us all. Sorry for my poor English.

I had to have a hip replacement at 27 due to a developmental disease which led to deformity and severe arthritis. I am now 57 and still climb mountains. Replacement joints are not the end of the world. I also have a degenerative me is cal condition in one knee that is doing well with diet and exercise for eight years. Initially I paid for a course of Apos therapy which really helped with the pain. You may require time off work to let your knees settle initially, but there is no need to despair. Best of luck.

I've just started with therapy for arthritis in my right knee. At first I was eager to undergo surgery... My doctor was saying he wants to hold off on surgery until I'm 60...I'm 47 years old now. Thus far I'm two days into my knee therapy...so far the muscles in the quadriceps and hips feel so much more stable....I'm convinced therapy is a go to for relief from arthritis. P.S. You remind me of my Orthopedic doctor who performed my total shoulder replacement surgery in June of 2023... Take that as a compliment, Your upbeat personality shines through like no tomorrow.. You are a great doctor in great spirits.

I just turned 51 and have had my first Baker's cyst 10 years ago. I first noticed them when I moved to a new home which had hard wood floors. Within a few weeks of moving in and walking on the hard wood I had my first bakers cyst. I didn't even know I had a lump on the back of my knee until my fiance noticed it. It was huge! At the time I wasn't sure what it was but looked online and self diagnosed the issue. It went on for several days / weeks and it would not go away. It was only in my left knee. I started to wear slippers with cushioning to see if it would help. And it did!!! I now wear slippers at all times when on hard wood floors. If I remove the slippers only for 10 minutes my knee pain will come back and I will have another cyst. The best thing you can do is wear shoes or slippers with as much cushioning as you can. If you don't notice any improvement try another pair. Do not use just rubber like crocks because it does not help. You need slippers that are like walking shows for support. I would imagine if you have hip pain this might help as well. Needless to say 10 years later so long as I keep wearing my slippers and use good shoes I have been able to keep them away. But I am not kidding, if I take them off, within 10 minutes of walking on hard wood floors I will have bad pain and a lump will start. Please pass this along to anyone who has baker's cysts!

I buy sorbothane insoles. Get the black ones as they are 100% sorbothane. They reduce shock by 90% and are made of a material originally made for NASA. They last about 10 years. Night and day difference in my knees! Even custom orthotics didn't do what sorbothane did for me. They cost around $30. I also eat cabbage, garlic daily for my knees and a serving of frozen cherries because cherries act like ibuprofen in the body to reduce inflammation. Overseas I used dried cherries. Taste is better in frozen.

I have tried pretty much all of these options without much benefit. Loosing some weight did help. I walk a lot, but eventually that started to made things worse. I finally got a total knee replacement and it was like a miracle. I was 80 years old when I had it done. I had it done in Athens, Greece by a doctor who specializes in this surgery. After about only two weeks I was good to go. After a month or two I was near to perfect. I so regret not having this done sooner as I was in pain for nearly two years.

At 74 I am on the list for my second knee replacement. One damaged in a motorcycle accident decades ago had staph infection and no surgeon wanted to take a chance on surgery. Finally got so bad I was willing to get a prosthesis if they had to remove it. My other knee did all the work and now worn out and extremely painful will get replaced. I believe the first damaged knee spread arthritis to most other joints in my body. All osteo.

A great video. Im nearly 80,, have bad arthritis in one knee for about 10 years. im a ballroom dancer, i still compete and teach dancing. I have to manage my knee carefully. I absolutely agree with everything said on this video and it corresponds to my experience. I had partial meniscectomy but i wish i hadnt. It didnt help and i think it worsened things. I use nsaids for a short period before competitions ( about every 2 months) and theyre very effective. Ive had a couple cortisone injections over the years. They were very effective. But im acutely aware that short term pain relief will allow more extreme stress on the knee which long- term, is bad news. Quality ballroom dancing is brilliant exercise and is largely impact free. Quality dancing, note. Luckily ive always loved exercise and my weight is low for my height ( BMI 22) and i eat a varied wholefood vegetarian diet for the last 50 years. Dont believe comments here about eating meat, though fish( which i dont eat) is good. Keep active, regular quality careful exercise, live smart and look after your body. Its the only one you'll ever have.

The only thing you forgot is to promote fish oil, glucosamine sulphate, and msm sulfur. They fixed my knees immensely, and the primary cause of knee arthritis is not the knee itself, it is the pelvis which is out, causing a leg to be longer than the other. Hence, I go to a chiropractor every 6 weeks to get an adjustment to bring the pelvis in alignment. i.e. same analogy with a car tyre if it's not in alignment, it will wear out quicker.

Then my meniscus tore a few months ago and the arthritis "blew up" on me. It became breathtakingly painful to bend my knee past about 150 degrees. Putting on sock and shoe was agony. Steroid injection didn't help. Acetaminophen and NSAIDs were no help. Suffered for months. Tried Meloxicam - - and the relief within three days was astonishing. Not pain free now, or fully recovered, but still ... an incredible improvement. Now I can work more at implementing helpful exercises, such as tailgate swinging and glute strengthening. BTW - thank you for your channel's content. Much appreciated!

Anyway like johna3607 said it took my pain away for 6 months and still felt good. The Dr. wanted to go ahead with knee replacement I said not until can't stand the pain. Just got to know your channel last week. I am currently going through PRP therapy. I am an athlete that had pains in my left shoulder. I went to the clinic and was giving diclofenac injection for two days. I was also given diclofenac tablet to be taken for 5 days. The injection was given on the 4th and 5th of March 2022. On the 9th of March 2022 I flew on a 55 minutes flight and on landing, I couldn't stand up from my seat. I have lost all my muscles and could not move my limbs. I lost 16kg of my body weight in 48 hours. My FBC dropped so low. My ESR went so very high. To cut it short, I had pains all over my body. I started PRP on the 24th of June. Done second session on 8th of July. Doctor advised that my shoulders and knee joints were highly affected in the tendons. This is the reason for the PRP. I have noticed an improvement as the sore like pains have stopped. We still have about 3 more sessions to go. I believe I was given overdose of diclofenac which destroyed my muscles and sent all my nerves to sleep. What do you think?

Dr. Peng thanks for the video - where do you stand on micro-fracturing surgery (stem cell growth from drilling holes in affected bone areas). I have been an athlete in the past and still try to take care of myself. However, I had two small areas of arthritis on my right knee and made the decision with my doctor to do micro-fracturing. Unbelievable how good my knee feels. I'm convinced it worked. Crutches for 9 weeks straight -need discipline. One of the requirements for success of this surgery is to not put any weight on the knee for at least two months even though it feels like you can. Just wanted to get your opinion. Thanks again.

This video gave me good info that I can use right away. I was considering working up to the long distance walking that I used to do 'in the day', but you have confirmed that that is a good idea and not destructive the way I thought it might be. And some of the options that you mentioned at the end of your discussion also sound promising (ie the shots). I have a serious heart condition so I have to be careful and these two options make sense. I'm already on a keto - meat and greens type of diet and have gotten rid of about a hundred pounds as my 'covid project', but clearly I need to do more, and you have now given me some viable options. Thank you.

Great video, Doc! I am a 70 y.o. Female with osteoarthritis. I could be a poster child for physical therapy as I feel it worked so great on me. I don’t need any oral pain meds but I do use the topical gel. It’s been a year since therapy and I’m getting around with no real issues. My CMC joint, however… that’s another story! That pain is on a whole different level! Yikes! I looked through your list of videos and didn’t see one covering thumb arthritis. Any plans for this in the near future?

@@JeffreyPengMD what I have discovered to worsen the thumb athritis especially with us ladies, is the way we take off our tight, tights. We pull them down using our left thumb. The tights cut thru the thumb. Lets try pulling down our tights by putting all hands inside our tights to pull the tight down as oppised to using our thumbs. Hope I have explained it well. Everyrimw my thumb is painfull, I discovered I will have been using it to pull down my tight tights and jeans. The moment I start using my hands it will stop pains within 2-3 days.

Thank you very much, Dr. I realise this might be a long shot, but I’m willing to give it a try. I’ve been dealing with knee pain for many years, and despite seeing doctors and physiotherapists, the cause has remained undiagnosed. This eventually led to a diagnosis of medial knee osteoarthritis, but the underlying cause was still unclear until just a few days ago. After watching a video on bow legs, I closely examined my legs in the mirror and noticed that they are bowed, with a gap of approximately 4 cm between my knees when standing. My question is: Has anyone successfully corrected their bow legs without surgery? If so, could you please share how you did it? Alternatively, if you’ve come across any videos on this topic, I would greatly appreciate it, as all my attempts to live pain-free would be in vain without addressing the root cause of my knee medial arthritis.

The one thing missing from here is how significant magnesium and vit D are for managing the pain . Docs never give this info and had to find it and find out its impact myself. But it is the key thing to manage the pain and make exercise possible also maintaining enough weight to walk . When I had increased D and taking mag with it I barely had pain , but was out of mag and had decreased D and not noticed the impact until knee was screaming . Had to take celebrex to get through it . Happened to get the mag again and almost immediately it improved - -so could go without the nsaid. So then did the correlation and increased D again ! I have tested it out a few times now and have concluded that the higher D like 8000 or 9000 IU daily with the magnesium is the key . I wish docs would include the significant nutritional info. For yrs complained to my doc about muscle tension that totally disappeared once I started with a mag supplement . Of course big pharma won't like it but it is THE biggest factor in reducing pain to do the exercise that keeps up mobility . Oh yes and keeping knee warm so circulation is maximized really helps as well. Best is an angora knee warmer but wool works well too !

@@JeffreyPengMD Thanks- I will watch for it . Don't forget to comment on the circulation issue and keeping the knee warm - not warmth from inflammation -but the impact that natural fibers have - especially those with thermal properties like angora. They have been used for eons in EU but have not been given much credence here. They are at least available in NA now. But they are incredibly effective especially for neck (whiplash ) and wrist issues (like carpel tunnel) - (and @ 100%cangora) work faster than tylenol to the same effect. The problem for knees is they are hard to keep on the knee so usually require a custom fit .
