I use this lens for a couple years now. It is sharp and easy to switch to manual focus, and manual focus works way better than other sony. However, it is heavy, so it requires a heavy duty tripod to keep it in place. I hand hold when I shoot outside and this lens is a bit too heavy for me, glad the lens is stabilized. It hunts like many other macro lenses. Conclusion, I like this lens but use it for macro only. Don’t recommend if you want a general purpose and occasional macro. For once awhile macro use, buy the cheaper, lighter, faster 85mm f1.8 and a $20 macro extension ring. Zeiss 55 f1.8 is great choice also, which I use one with macro ring for a long time before purchasing this 90mm.

I use this lens for photographing fine art. I will note that you can put the camera in DMF mode and keep the lens in AF position and use manual focus via the remote control. At least on my r7r4 the manual focus via the remote is crazy fine-grained but slow to use. Good for things that dont move like artwork.

I purchased this lens last week... it is SO sharp. It's crazy! I use the 85mm 1.4 for outdoor bokeh. I use this when I need the sharpness or I'm shooting in my home studio. Very interesting vidoe, sir! ...However, regarding the statement "The Best Macro Lens in the WORLD!!!", may I say that DxO doesn't test Fujinon lenses because they can't interpret the X-Trans sensor. So, you haven't seen a comparison between this Sony lens and the ultra-sharp Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro! As a landscape and product STILLS X-T3 shooter (no video), I have been debating on selling my Fuji kit (reluctantly), and moving into FF, specifically the Sony a7Riii. Since I shoot 99% tripod-mounted, neither IBIS nor video interests me. So, my question is, for large print output (around 24"x 36" prints), how much of an improvement in terms of image sharpness, detail rendition, dynamic range, base ISO performance, etc., would I see over the already excellent X-T3 (combined with the ultra-sharp Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro lens), when using the a7Riii and the Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro tripod-mounted? Thanks!

Very nicely done lens review, except for one minor issue...Your title "Best Macro lens in the World" is flawed...DxOMARK does NOT test Fujinon lenses. I am a Fujiflm X-System user, and have found the Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro lens to be the absolute sharpest lens I've ever used in 40 years of photography! When I combine it with an X-T3, a solid tripod, and good pre/post processing technique, I am seeing incredible detail in my product and macro images. And if I use focus-stacking, I am obtaining detail that would rival FF and possibly even medium format, IMHO. I think a very interesting comparison would be between your Sony Macro and the Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro! Thanks again, sir.

If you do not agree with negative reviews about something then you would say the thing is underrated, people tend to rate it too negatively. But not the best 2:1 or even 5:1macro lens now is it.... Great for portrait and 1:1 macro. Perhaps you need to amend the title to include "best 1 :1 macro" :-) Dedicated macro photographers like to go beyond the magnification that this lens provides and dont even bother with OSS or AF, so these two features would be nothing more than a gimmick in those respects as the technique is lean to focus with diffused flashes at a decent shutter speed to eradicate blur.

Use a macro rail. No need to touch the focus ring after setting the first shot of the stack.

DXOMARK is overrated, they don't test every lens and all lenses have some margin of error. If you check Christopher Frost on YT he will say lens A is sharper than lens B with image proof of it. Then you check DXOMARK and they will say lens B is sharper than lens A. I have a Sigma 105mm 2.8 macro lens and according to CF it's sharper than the Sony 90 macro.

Tech Notice Better than my Hasselblad HV and Sony A99II... The Sony A7III with Zeiss Loxia 21 f/.2.8, Sony / Zeiss 55 f/.1.8 and Sony 90 f/.2.8 OSS/Macro is espectacular! Also, all my Sony A-Mount lenses (Sigma 35 and 50 Art, Sony / Zeiss 16-35, Sony 16 f/.2.8 Fish-Eye and Tamron 70-300 f/.4-5.6 works great with Sony LA-EA3 Adapter... Sigma 50 and Sony Fish-Eye need the LA-EA4 Adapter to Auto Focus... A-Mount lenses works great with Eye Focus and AF-C... A-Mount: just for photos with Sony A7III... This camera is able to work at ISO 8000 with great noise control... The Sony A7III is better than Sony A7RII... I don’t know this camera vs A7RIII or A9!

@@theTechNotice Coastal Optics UV-VIS-IR 60mm Macro. Schneider Macro Varon 4.5/85. Scanner-Nikkor ED lenses. There are other high-spec professional lenses beside these. The Sony 90mm is a brilliant consumer grade lens. But better in that line... the 65mm Voigtlander apo-lanthar and now it bigger brother the 110 [even the older Voigtlander SL 125mm f/2.5 Macro APO Lanthar would give the Sony serious competition]. some would even say the Milvus 100 is better and is at least its equal.

It may be the sharpest, and have great bokeh, low aberrations, but the autofocus/manual thing is huge plus no weather sealing. With its flaws it cannot be regarded as the best macro lens in the world. There is more to a lens than just sharpness. Manual override is how a professional lens works. This jumping to another focus point is amateur level stuff. Sony should be ashamed. This is the frustrating thing about Sony. They make sensational gear but then get something really major wrong. Sony need to buy Canon lenses to find out how a pro-level lens is supposed to work. Canon may be behind the times with their cameras, but Canon L glass works exactly how pros want their lenses to behave. This is why Canon overtook Nikon in the 1990’s. The 70-200 2.8 in particular was the sugar that attracted professionals, and pros loved the other glass. The Canon 100 macro may not be as sharp as the Sony, but because of the way it works, it is a better lens. I use both Sony and Canon. I prefer the Sony cameras, but I prefer the Canon glass.
