I'd argue that Lawrence Taylor was the best player of the 80's. He literally changed the way teams ran their offences, became only the second defensive player to be named MVP, earned a record 3 DPOY awards, and was selected to 8 First Team All-Pro teams. I love Montana but come on, the 80's was Lawrence Taylor.

Andre Tippett was EVERY BIT as good, or even better than Lawrence Taylor. If you took the time to study the both of them, and ACTUALLY look at Tippett's stats, you'd know this. But LT got all of the glory because he played for Bill Parcels, and the Giants, in the Big Apple - the media center of America. In the meantime, Tippett was playing for some terrible New England teams, and he didn't have the talent surrounding him on defense that LT had. COMPARE their stats, and you will see VERY similar numbers, even though Tippett played in 30 less games than LT.

@@luisrodriguez-mb7cc Jerry is too skinny. Tatum would have ripped a forearm across the back of his neck, and Rice would be vaporized. No way Rice would go across the middle with Tatum patrolling the secondary. Tatum would, literally, put Jerry Rice into a coma. Keep this in mind, buddy...Ronnie Lott idolized Jack Tatum, and patterned his game after "The Assassin". Tatum was a head-hunter in a day where spearing with the helmet was allowed. That's even more true in the modern era, where the rules favor the passing game. The object of any game is to win. Last time I checked, Manning won one ring in the 2,000's (with superior skill position players around him). Brady won SB XXXVI, then back-to-back 14 win seasons (and last back-to-back titles) in '03 & '04. Manning's great regular season stats bely the fact that he was mediocre in the clutch. BUT ESPN loved him, so... See Brett Favre. Tom had the better coach? Montana got the "best of '80's" nod not factoring stats or coach. Brady is the player of the 2000's.
