My practice hill was such a difficult place to learn that when it came time to fly off real cliffs, it was a piece of cake.

Thanks for putting this up. Counter intuitive for the beginers to keep glider level until airspeed is obtained. They hold the nose too high, creating too much drag to get up to speed. I've never taken glider lessons, but for giggles I did get a Private Pilots License. A big problem I suspect is getting people to aim the nose down for speed when they get too slow and panic. In airplanes it needs to be kept in mind to push towards the ground on panic, for the gliders it would be pull towards the ground to have control speed.

Yeah, it should be pulled in just a couple inches to get just the right angle. Most will pull in too far and end up running the full time. Pushing out is a bad idea, so they give up and let it fly at trim, focusing only on left-right inputs to keep the wing level, which is hard at such slow speed. It's like learning to ride a bike for the first time, except you have up-down to worry about too, and a slow response rate! But worth it.

The protracted learning time is one reason why the average hang glider pilot is so much astute than the average paraglider pilot. It takes longer to learn, therefore one has assimilated more micro-meteorological knowledge, as well as flying site etiquette.

My instructor told me to run fast, not jog. My first lesson started on a 50 foot pasture hill and I had some pretty bad landings. Some of these guys seemed to be doing ok, given they were just beginning.
@ViDesignStudios8 жыл бұрын
+Arnold's Design But if you bolt forward and accelerate quickly, it will lift off your shoulders right away, then you'll push with your hands before it tugs on your back, popping the nose up. The faster the run the better, but it's unnatural to have a slow acceleration, so it's safer so discourage students from going full speed. The instructor gets amazing height with a smooth takeoff. Pretty much none of these examples do what they should be doing though :D

Plenty of self styled experts in the comments. Too my mind, this is just pretty standard intro HG stuff from the time. It's certainly better than when I was teaching myself in the early 70s🙃

+SORRY YOU Those are training gliders, once you advance you'll want the ones with tighter control. If you're just starting, save money on the training glider by using the instructor's (included), then buy when you're ready. Buying used by yourself is dangerous, many instructors will help you inspect them or sell some themselves. To answer your question, about 1500 for used, 3000 new on the low end. There's different shapes for stunts, so it can go up to 10k. Always use an instructor, the controls are not intuitive at all.

Glad I learnt in the UK with luscious green grassy slopes and no huge Rugby/football posts to hit and a hard running track to fall on. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen

How much does a standard lesson cost?
@ViDesignStudios8 жыл бұрын
+sfbluestar As low as $50 for a few hours if you can find a Groupon or similar discount, but usually over 100/day. I've heard some learn as fast as 4 days/hang 1 cert but it can add up if you're not a fast learner. Still, much cheaper than skydiving at 200-400 for a tandem jump, or expensive airplane fuel.

The students learning to fly in the football arena haven't been instructed to keep the nose down as they run and actually RUN . Do that and they will be lifted off and have much better control over the direction they want to travel in. Flaring as they land would be a nice touch and perhaps a streamer on a stick would be helpful for wind direction. If your going to go to all the effort probably better to give them the best chance of some success :))) Top spot for having a crack in very light winds

They were :) If I left the audio on you'd hear a lot of "Pull in!" but most are brand new, first-day Intro students. They'll do one run pulling in too tightly and get no air, then ignore the instructor so they do. Running - yeah for sure, but it'd be even worse if they bolted and popped the nose up and stalled, so the instructor tolerates slow starts, plus he can get plenty of air with those slow runs and a soft pull-in. Yep he has tiny streamers on the cables and checks wind before they start.

...looks like the learners need to fly faster, pull in uprights more...'mushing' through the air is too risky for various reasons, e.g., stalls, loss of control, blow-overs, unwanted sudden turns downwind, ...
@ViDesignStudios8 жыл бұрын
+jwm239 Yep. Most try to fly at trim right at launch so they can focus on staying level, but it doesn't work out. They're told to pull in a couple inches but I think they want to push out to get that 'first flight' feeling, and that doesn't work out well either :D
