The animation which you see in the video of optical switches is a rather primitive implementation of optical switches, on good keyboards with optical swtiches it also can detect how far you press the key, at least with a large enough amount of steps to get the granular control of a controller. It comes in handy for example for flying and driving in games. I can't confirm that optical switches last longer (I would guess that it depens on which material they used etcetera) but I can imagine that it is easier to make optical switches last longer because there should be less friction.

You might want to try out a GK64 or GK62. You can get them in a metal, wood, or ABS case of your choice with a variety of optical switches to choose from. It features cherry stems as well so you can use any profile keycap you like. These switches are plate mounted, so you can buy another set of switches from them and changing them out is as easy as pulling the first set out and putting the new set in, no soldering.

Check places like eBay for vintage keyboards, as you might have some luck finding some overstock of something like a vintage Cherry G80 series board with MX black switches, and the build quality is much higher then a lot of newer boards. Also don't be afraid to go thrifting in places like Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other local thrift stores as I've found some vintage IBM boards that way for my collection that cleaned up really nice, same for my local recycle drop off where the guy could care less if I salvage something from the electronics bin. When your budget is slim, think outside the box, as you never know what you might find, even if it takes a little bit of leg work, and elbow grease.

ive been using couple of years this CHERRY MX-BOARD 3.0, didnt even know the keys were half height in it, till i watched this video, lol. And what comes to the thermal paste, MX-4 old vs new edit, i do feel the new one is better, i do have both and have used both many times during this year.
@MisterJulius5 жыл бұрын
My main keyboard at the moment is the GMMK TKL with Gateron silenced reds. Hot-swap sockets which work with pretty much every MX-style mechanical switch. Got it as a birthday present, keeping it as my main since I can just rip out and replace the switches with whatever down the line. Already had to do that, switched from Kailh Box Reds to Gateron silenced reds because I'm just too furious of a typist for the clack to not come through my microphone. Software is wonky as heck, stabilizers are a bit rattley, but otherwise the board is pretty solid.

Have any experience with graphene thermal pads as a replacement for thermal paste? I hear they perform similarly and can be reused many times. I use an old crappy Microsoft ergonomic natural keyboard with the built in palm rest and a dell optical mouse . My main keyboard is the Steelseries merc stealth, Probably the most unique Gaming keyboard i have ever heard of and a lot of people actually agree. The Steelseries merc stealth is no longer being made, it was discontinued for sale and production by Steelseries to make way for the "successors" the (Apex line). which makes no sense The Steelseries merc stealth is a much better keyboard than the Apex line ever could be. If you think i am wrong ask those who have a Steelseries merc or merc stealth, its just not the same, sure i like Mechanical keyboards, and i would love a merc stealth with mechanical switches, But fuck no would i ever give up my keyboard to make way for an inferior Mechanical keyboard(the Apex line). For me the ergonomic gaming terrain with the flattened palm rest, was undeniably the best highlight, and there is no keyboard on this earth quite like it. Yes the keyboard is quite long, but it fits perfectly on the inner arms of my recliner, hovering just over my legs by a centimeter or two. There is one other feature i love on this keyboard, and its also quite unique, no its not the lighting, or the volume control....it has a key on the very top right that can close any application, that is in front(selected) or in fullscreen, and if you hit the button when nothing is on your screen it brings up the "Shut Down Windows" box(window). This keyboard is the best i have ever had, to me it even destroys most mechanical keyboards i have ever tried. Sure its a membrane keyboard, but its far more comfortable, functional, versatile, and just plain easier to use for gaming, and normal daily use than any Mechanical keyboard on the market today.

Yeah I don't think anything is ever going to beat hall effect switches for life span, the only downside is the key caps might wear out before the actual switch, and with some older hall effect boards, trying to find replacement key caps in the future is going to be a royal pain in the ass.
