Nowadays a lot of people think pranks are just being mean and hurting/harassing other people. (See basically the entire 'pranks' section of youtube) Jim's pranks are the definition of pranks. They're stupid, hilarious, sometimes very elaborate, but ultimately harmless. Jim knows when to stop because it's not funny anymore. Which is the most important thing that a lot of people don't know what to do. Jim also knows when Dwight needs a little encouragement. Like during his short tenure as manager in s7 (?) and he shot a gun in the office. Jim knew he was feeling like shit so he gave him some genuine compliments. I absolutely love their friendship!!!

Jim does care about his job. He got promoted twice within a matter of months. He sold around $40 000, much to Dwight's envy and dismay. I know that later on, Jim said that trying was something he had never done in his job, but that is clearly out of character with how he acted beforehand. When Dwight was the top salesman at the company in Season 2 and he was ninth, he was clearly green with jealousy. I mean, even in Season 1, Jim did get animated about his biggest sale of the year, even though he had previously claimed that his job bored him (which it did).

Dwight spends his day making every bodies job suck, like doing fake fire drills with real fire, bangs his coworkers fiancee on the reg, kisses the boss ass, snitches, and tries to steal leads..... Jim is just the balancing force. he's the one guy at your job who makes everybody laugh, calls out the bosses bullshit, and pays people at his job to help him piss off the categorically biggest ass hat at the job. he's chaotic good. Fun fact: we had a peculiar senior secret Santa tradition at my school of making the person wear/say embarrassing things for 3 days before the gift, and the final day I had mine carry around a jello stapler and wear a Dwight costume and reply “identity theft is not a joke Jim” to people coz I knew she was a big Office fan. It was a big hit.
