I am unbelievably happy I found this channel. For a long time I noticed that my hair would become dry or just not respond to a certain product after I had been using it for a while, usually around 6 months. I genuinely thought my hair was just getting "used" to the product and I would switch up my products. I had no idea my hair was just needing more protein, more moisture, etc. And that's why it would respond so well to me switching up my products. I also had no clue what a cast was either until I started watching your videos. When I finally went to my hairdresser and told her I wanted to embrace my curls, when she was styling she asked me if I liked a wet look and I said yes. So she used a pretty strong hold gel. Later that day after I had shaken my hair around and run my fingers through it I realized it was super soft and pretty. So that's what I started doing everyday... With out realizing I was creating a cast and stuff 😂😂

Great video! Thank you so much for sharing 💕 The curls blueberry bliss leave in contains hydrolyzed quinoa and silk amino acids but it's so beautifully balanced with behentrimonium methosulte that it is absolutely perfect for my protein sensitive hair.
@stacy84185 жыл бұрын
The Blueberry Bliss Leave-In Conditioner actually has 2 proteins in it, for those of you who have protein sensitive hair. They are towards the end of the ingredients list, however. Learned this from Swavy Curly Courtney. :) I personally just bought it FOR the protein- excited to try it! 😊
@karapelletier28664 жыл бұрын
You saved me from bringing that up. The leave-in has hydrolyzed Quinoa, aloe, and silk amino acids. It is actually my leave-in of choice when I need more protein. I prefer the As I Am leave-in when I need a protein-free leave-in.

@JannelleOShaughnessy6 жыл бұрын
So awesome that you are taking the time to learn your baby's curls! So many curly haired kids moms didn't lol. I am working on a series to break more of the general concepts down. At 3 years old though i think you are safe to find a good and gentle cleanser, conditioner and maybe a leave in to keep it conditioned. For porosity one of the easiest ways to determine is how long the hair takes to air dry. if its a long time its low and if its fast to dry its likely high. That will help you pinpoint if you need more moisturizing or lighter weight products.
@VanessaLStrada6 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU! Since watching your channel, and learning such a thing existed (!!!), I've been looking into a DevaCurl stylist/salon in our area for her first haircut. I'm hoping they would be able to point me in the right direction for her hair specifically. I know puberty might change her hair game eventually...But for now, I want her to have minimal damage and keep her curls as intact as possible. I'm definitely on the hunt for gentle products. Despite their claims, baby shampoo seems to strip her hair and leave her curls stretched out and wispy/frizzy. I've tried reviving them with coconut oil but that seems to have a less than desired greasing effect with little to no improvement of her curl quality. So I'm still on the hunt for shampoo and conditioner that is gentle, moisturizing, AND won't build up. 🤔🤔🤔

This is interesting, I like that you also mentioned some of the ingredients. Though I cannot say that we'd have the exact same type of hair, that's hard to tell, and everyone's different, but this gives me some options in other types of products that I coyld try and I definitely will. When I started transitioning 6 months ago, I was freaked out when I saw the prices of Devacurl products, and thought I'd start a bit lower priced with Shea Moisture and Cantu. However realizing now that these may not be the best for me. As these are starting to finish and I'm getting some empties, it's time to try something different. I won't know if it's right for me unless I try. I can say though that the one Shea Moisture product that I got sure would buy again is the Jamaican Black Castor oil deep conditioner. Love that one!

I have one but will work on an updated routine and product video soon! I'm in a bit of experimental phase with this new hair growth so hang tight! haha
@brainsparkdesigns6 жыл бұрын
I second that. I'm about 1 month in and I feel like every wash day is a science experiment. I'd love a good run down of how often to do what. When do I cowash, how often to deep condition, when should I clarify, how often should I low poo, what stylers are regular users and what do you use for certain things...? My head is spinning! Also, how often do you change products from one wash day to the next (like do you do the same wash day routine several times in a row or do you use different products every time you wash?) I've watched most of your videos and I know most of the answers are mentioned, but I'm having a hard time putting it all together. Thanks!

@@brainsparkdesigns OMG!!! That analogy of the science experiment is just completely perfect. The more I simplify my routine the happier I get. I just found you and I don’t know how I went through the last 35 years without knowing how to take proper care of my curly, fine locks. I always thought moisture would way it down and I was sooo wrong. I do an overnight castor and coconut oil treatment every few weeks, but thinking now I need to switch up my whole routine and integrate more products. One super simple question- when do I know it’s wash day, and how often? I typically just wash it every few days when it looks a little greasy or the curls are all stretched out.

Hi Jannelle! It looks you have a Maui Moisture product in a tub that you didn't address in your video. What is it and what do you use it for? I noticed it sitting there after you talked about the Red Rawkyn Hair Mask. I have wavy hair and I'm still learning about which products to use on my hair and the best way to apply them to get the results I want. I have recently started diffusing my hair on the cool setting after I apply my gel to create a cast and then scrunching out the crunch when it's dry. I seem to get much better results with this method than I do air drying my hair. I have pretty thick, coarse hair and have noticed a big change in my hair and my waves since I started taking hypothyroid medication a few years ago. Your videos have helped me a lot. Thank you!

Hi Jannelle! Thank you for all your great videos. (Your dog is adorable.) Do you have a favorite protein-FREE Curl Cream, that I could use in between a leave-in and a gel, such as Spiralicious? I have such a hard time trying to find a protein free curl cream. I have low porosity, thin, fine, easily weighed down, 2c-3a or even maybe a combo with 3b, or 3c. My hair is so protein sensitive that I cannot use any protein in my stylers,...I do a 15 minute protein treatment every two weeks, followed by a deep conditioner. I do a deep conditioner every time I shampoo 2x a week, and use reg. conditioner when co-washing. My hair is also very sensitive to chemicals, so I am always reading ingredients, and like to use products with all natural, even Organic extracts. Also,...before I finish writing you this book,...I have stubborn greys right in the front and they 'pop' up every 2 weeks. I love your hair, and never see any greys in your hair, the color is very nice. Do you have any 'at-home' hair coloring tips?

He, Jannelle! I haven't gotten through all of them yet, but I'm LOVING your videos! Couple quick questions. I have low porosity hair and was thinking of giving the the Woman to Woman shampoo and conditioner you mentioned a try. I've been using Innersense since June and I'm not so sure they are a good fit for me...especially the stylers. I'm still working on process as well, though, so maybe it isn't the products. May I ask how often you cleanse with the W to W shampoo and would you consider it a clarifier to the point of it removing excess build up like Kinky Curly Come Clean or a Malibu Undo Goo-type product? Also, I'm SO afraid of using a leave-in b/c my hair is baby fine and just poofs and is so soft. Would a leave-in make that worse? Thanks! :)

Hi! I really enjoy your videos! Thank you for sharing! Quick question: is the Righteous Roots oil cruelty free? I cannot seem to find that information anywhere. You mentioned that most of the other products are, but you didn't mention if for this one. They say they are on the website, but there's no actual CF statement (that I've found) which I find a little hinky. Also, the process of doing a curly hair routine everyday is time consuming. Any ideas? Thanks!

Is it all of your hair that is being soaked in sweat or just towards your roots? If its all of your hair I would invest in a head band to absorb moisture, i would also pineapple or put it in a bun to insure it is not touching skin, back etc. When i am working out I typically pull it down after I have dabbed my back, forehead etc for excess sweat. I then fluff it out a bit so that it regains some of the shape it had previously and to air out my roots. I then will use an ACV spray. just acv diluted into warm water and spray directly onto my scalp to refresh and fight off bacteria. also prevents itching. I allow it to try and that is typically enough for me.

I didn't care for the deva curl foam but I love the arc angel gel it has more hold then their other gels. Still need to try ouidad. Do you tend to loose a lot of hair when you wash it? I have fine curly/wavy hair and I worry about hair loss. I know not washing daily we will loose more when we do wash but not sure what is considered normal
@JannelleOShaughnessy6 жыл бұрын
I am always losing hair lol. We lose about 100 strands a day normally. I don't personally look at my clump in the shower and feel like its a lot because I am used to it. But I remember how shocking it was to see after I stopped straightening my hair. If you feel like it is in excess of 100 strands a day I would discuss with your dr. IMO if you aren't seeing bald spots or particular areas that are thinning its likely normal!

I love your channel! Just started my curly journey and I'm using Jessicurl now bc I'm extremely scent sensitive and their products can all be unscented. Do you know of any other unscented/fragrance free products?

Have you tried Maui Moisture? It’s got Aloe as the #1 ingredient!

It also has formaldehyde releasers. Don't use it

Lol so hard when you said you couldn’t get rid of your empties! Sounds like a product junkie there, reminds me of myself, haha. Thanks for the video, you’re awesome! 😘

So I thought low perosity doesn’t really like much protein. But you kept mentioning needing protein throughout the whole video. So now I’m very confused now. How do I know when I need protein? (I have low perosity hair)

What’s a good clarifying shampoo that can be used 2-3 times a week? I work out a lot and I get a lot of build up which makes my 2c curls limp, frizzy and undefined
@JannelleOShaughnessy6 жыл бұрын
Is it scalp build up or build up on your strands? If its scalp just use ACV, 1/2 cup or so in a spray bottle with warm water and spray it directly onto your scalp! If its hair, i personally would go for bounce curl clarifying shampoo!
@Starshiner8096 жыл бұрын
@@JannelleOShaughnessy It is scalp build up :/ I have a condition where my scalp produces too much oil so that is also why I tend to get build up more easily.
@JannelleOShaughnessy6 жыл бұрын
Karina Bonilla ACV is going to be one of your best friends then! It fights bacteria growth etc. I keep some in a spray bottle and spray it directly onto my scalp when needed between washes!

Jannelle O'Shaughnessy Engels I’ll definitely give that a try? Also, do you have any tips for second day hair? I’m using al jessi curl products which defined my hair well. But I’m still struggling with so much frizz even though I sleep with a silk pillow case and bonnet. Any suggestions? I also exercise a lot so that may effect my curls too.

Hi Jannelle, thanks for the informative video! Question about Kinky Curly products - I have only used the custard, and while I like what it does for my hair, I do NOT like the smell! Do the rest of the KC products smell the same? (I have 2b, low-porosity, fine hair fyi.) Thanks again! :)
@JannelleOShaughnessy6 жыл бұрын
The smells are not different entirely & come clean and Knot today are both more subtle scents in general.

I'm so thankful for this Tutorial...how do I know when the product has protein?
@joannogas43916 жыл бұрын
Lizette: Real life+curly girl just put out a video on ingredients. In addition to the aloe that Janelle mentioned is a protien, she says to look for the word "hydrolized" in the ingredient list. You'll see hydrolized wheat, soy, silk etc.

Do you need a satin pillow case if you have a wrap? Just wondering what's the point of both.

Thanks for the great review! What is the ingredient called that you mentioned in a couple cleanser products that is good for hard water?
@JannelleOShaughnessy6 жыл бұрын
The natural chelating ingredient I am referring to is Sodium phytate and phytic acid. If I am remembering correctly kinky Curly Come Clean has the phytic acid.

Hey Jannelle! Of the stylers and gels you recommended, are there any that particularly encourage shrinkage? I love Kinky Curly products, but the custard stretches my hair so I'm moving it out of my rotation. My hair is really struggling after the hormonal changes of having cute kiddos and nursing, and figuring out protein balance, so I need as much help as I can get in getting my curls to be defined and shrink up.
