My first visit to the UK was 1984 and pub food was such great value in that simple, unapologetic way. The shepherds pie, ploughman's were staple with big serves. From memory they cost around 3 quid, sometimes little more or less. A range of other simple meat with veg offerings of similar cost depending where you were. An absolute bargain, great sustenance for travelling around, kept you warm, always tasty and highly enjoyable. Comfort food. Scotland the pints were under a pound and it was not a great deal over that in London. Love those memories.

Good afternoon,1st comment on your channel, 22 years I’ve been going down to swanage, and often visited this pub , it always reminds me of Stonehenge god knows why . Another good pub for a pint of proper cider 🍺 straight out the barrel and the Sunday roast are good is the red lion in Swanage , or for food the ship in Swanage, with the chip shop across the road in the square ( very nice fish and chips ) all the best Phil

In my day we were left in a room with Lino and a desk and chairs, whilst parents got bladdered in the pub. We;d be given a ginger beer and bag of crisps (with the blue salt bag). Nothing to do but stare at the walls! I don’t live that far from Wortrh Matravers so will give the Square and Compass a go 😊

That is definitely my kind of pub. My hubby and me met in a village pub similar to this one but way up in the wilds of Scotland. The whole atmosphere and surroundings looked stunning. Food looked good too. This was a really lovely review. Thank-you. ❤

What a brilliant pub. Chances of finding a place like this without reviews like this are slim to none. BTW most authentic curries have quite a bit of cinnamon in them. Where I am at in Holland, they put cinnamon in most deserts, the Dutch influence on the American story can also be traced via what has cinnamon in abundance.

But in curry dishes the connamon is just one of multiple spices being used, so you can't identify it by iteslf - in desserts you most certainly can haha!! Great pub though isn't it - not one you'd find by accident!!

Are the baked goods made by the owners? Porter looks amazing. Museum fascinating. Little places like that encourage something- the ability to have a good natter no distractions. Lovely review in a wonderful part of the country. If it ain't broke why fix it. Prices what one would expect and good value. Take care mate

I love Dorset apple cake, that sugary coating baked in the top is tremendous! When it's a simple offering like that it needs to be good and that did look good! Quirky places for videos are great!

I recall going there many, many years ago when on holiday in Dorset. I think back then they literally only did pasties. I would imagine they are ‘homemade’ but not on site maybe by someone local as they didn’t look mass produced. Such a quirky place

That looks well worth a visit next time we're down 👍 My favourite quirky pub is the Tan Hill Inn , it's the highest Inn in the British Isles at 1,732 feet above sea level. Years back revellers celebrating New Years Eve were unable to leave for 3 days due to snow and the pubs isolated position....now that's what I call a proper lock in 🤣

We stayed in a cottage accross the road from it back in summer 2020, loved that pub, even in Covid when you couldn't go inside. Loved the pies and the home pressed ciders/perrys and what a view from the garden at the front. Can't wait to go back one day but it's a long way from Lancashire! Great review as always too.

The pub was named more than 200 years ago by a local stonemason who bought it. I guess it’s just a name that stuck rather than a meeting point for those with funny handshakes now

What a great pub! These places should all have protection orders on them to stop someone changing it to what they think is s good pub. My wife and me remember our parents leaving us in a Mark i Ford Consul outside The Fox pub in Peckforton, Cheshire ( now known as the Bickerton Poacher), in 1967 being fed on lemonade and crisps. Just a year or so later, I remember aged 15 being left in a car outside a pub in Seacombe, Wallasey and as it was freezing weather, I was allowed the keys to keep the engine and heater running. Various family friends would pass me out bottles of pale ale at regular intervals. Unbelievable in today's cotton wool woke land, but that was real life then.

There is a historic connection with Purbeck stone quarry and The Square and Compass. Originally the early pub landlord was a Stonemason hence the name The Square And Compass. Their sausage rolls are in a different league from Greggs and Jeremy Clarkson's. The Dorset Apple Cake is a local delicacy. I love the Dorset Apple Cake with a cuppa.

Simple is often better. That was much better than Clarkson's pub. That beer looked great ... I wish I was 20 years old again and didn't have to worry about beer belly. Anyway, it's a fantastic looking pub and at least they know how to cook a sausage roll properly .... Green Light ... Thanks.

Butcombe house? Independent tiny brewery. Love what they do with food and drink..understated and honest. Try the Goat and Tricycle in Bournemouth.

@@GreenoEats if you make it there obviously the Cornish pasty’s but the offering of sausage rolls ,fresh coffee and doughnuts , the sour dough baguettes are something else, I’m a bit of a food connoisseur myself proclaimed but I’m not kidding this place is a freekin gem, the only association I have with this place is when I’m visiting as a customer no affiliation 👌

That's my kind of pub simple food / drink at a reasonable price who could ask for more if the pub was owned by a well-known chef the prices would be at least twice as high ! And a good traditional porter or stout is great too 👍
