Rudy + anyone else: I bought a box of Iconic Masters, and under the... whaddaya call it, the inner tray? Under the inner tray in the box was a shiny, spanking new looking 2018 penny. But it was actually a great box (for Iconic anyway) - I paid $130 and the value inside was roughly $200 in rares (excluding rares worth under $2). Were they still printing Iconic Masters this year? If not, no idea how a 2018 penny got in there.

Daniel Chang is absolute trustworthy. He very publicly deals vintage professionally. If it ever came out he sold a fake, his reputation would be ruined. Not even an alpha lotus would be worth that, because the rest of his collection would lose easy 20% since people stop trusting him, and I would say that collection is in the high 6 figures at least, if not the low 7 figures.

Eventually these counterfeit cards will get to the point that trying to discern which is real and which is fake will have to come short of ruining the actual card. It's literally only a matter of time. I saw a rebacked Lotus the other day and I didn't notice any of the stuff this dude stated on it, and the guy knew it was rebacked because he bought it intentionally like that.

Problem is you need a real one to compare, and who has that lying around like this ???? Those rebacked you can always tell, IF you have a comparison ready. What I do not understand is why nobody fakes cases and these stickers for the fake cards. In the case plus sleeve the really good ones would easily pass, especially since people trust Becket and PSA and do not look as hard as they would look at a raw one.

@terryfeynman
@terryfeynman 6 жыл бұрын
You could simply have them produced, and then fill them with fake duals from revised for example, since they could be easier absorbed by the market then the extreme expensive ones, and it would be way less obvious. Simply claim you are a collector that is desolving his collection, or part of it, or you want to buy power and finance it this way. And faking the stickers cannot be that hard either. Stick to psa so you do not need subgrades, plus who checks the stickers if they are fake ? Ever seen anybody do it ? They maybe look at the number and look at the card if the grade makes sense, but that is it.

They all even had a print dot in lower left hand corner
@JasperJanssen
@JasperJanssen 5 жыл бұрын
Those aren’t print dots. All a/b/CE/ice is basically the card, with a black border including round corners around it, and then a black frame is placed around that. Basically seems like a miscommunication between Richard Garfield and the printers about whether the printers needed the artwork delivered without borders, or with, in order to produce the cards. This is why the borders are so thick in these sets - there’s basically two borders around the card frame instead of one. If you have an actual beta card (of any rarity), really look at the border - you can quite clearly see the two different shades of black, and the rounded corners of the inner border peeking out.

What always pisses me off is that the bazar has become this big thing. I saw back then what a cool card it was, especially combined with sylvan library and the one or other howling mine, but nobody realized it's potential back then. I had 4 of them and bought them for around 20 bucks each, and I sold them for 25 to be able to afford an Ali from Cairo. Today I could get easily 4 Ali's for one of them, tragic. Legends it is similar, the big chase cards back then where completely different. Moat was a bulk rare, while mirror universe was one of the most expensive cards in the set. Today you could get 2 for a single moat. A tabernacle was not exactly bulk, but far from being a chase card. I originally bought my bazars for my fun deck (we had house rules for these fun deck : must have at least 100 cards and must have at least 10 cards from each color as well as 10 artifacts.. To avoid being mana screwed too often we allowed 6 birds of paradise, though the did not count towards the 10 green you had to have, and 6 times city of brass and you could have as many duals as you wanted to. Back then duals where like 8 bucks for light played, so we had duals only. That I sold all of them back then is my biggest regret. Today I could buy a new car for that deck : 4 times bazar of bagdad and about 40 dual lands, plus a ton of fun cards from sets like Legends, Aabian nights and Antiquities. I played them because many people did not know the cards, and thus where often quite surprised at what my cards did. Had some heavy combos, like wall of swords (3/5 flying) play animate wall on it, and that red glyph from legends (gives target wall +10/0 until end of turn and you need to destroy that wall at the end of turn) , and suddenly you had a 13/5 flyer attacking you, that died at the end of turn. Or camouflage was also a fun one, you declared attackers, then you took the card, mixed them, and put them backside up on the table, then opponent declared defenders. If that leads to an illegal block, that creature is unblocked that turn. Back then a booster box of Arabian nights was already 700 bucks, and that was early 95, crazy. Even legends and antiquities where like 400 already. 2 friends and me bought A BOX EACH with our christmas money (we each got a 13th salary for Christmas, pretty common here in Germany). Oh how I wish today I had kept all the cards instead of selling them, but we thought magic is jumping the shark, since the set that came out where all not really good. Homelands, fallen empires, ice age, and don't even get me started on chronicles. Many cards I had like killerbee lost 80% value practically overnight, and never really recovered. Killer bee's where 80$-100$ pre chronicles, not even today I would get that much.
@Ethan.s..
@Ethan.s.. 6 жыл бұрын
terryfeynman I use to own the original Killer Bee’s art. It had a interesting story that came along with it too. The person I bought it from in 2007ish won it in a tournament as a first place prize back in 1994. Get this, the 2nd place prize was a complete set of Beta. Funny story haha. He was a bit bitter in 2007, and wished he had come in 2nd place.
@terryfeynman
@terryfeynman 6 жыл бұрын
@ Ethan you might want to talk to Daniel Chang about that picture (the guy in the video, he has his own channel Vintage MTG) , they are worth a pretty penny man. Of course it really depends on the card for which you have the original art, and the set. He has quite a few pieces of original art for sale on his website : www.vintagemagic.com/store/art-sketches.html for example the original art for the Thorn Thalid from fallen empires is currently on sale for 3300 $. I would imagine that the killer bees are worth a lot more, since they are from a much more in demand set, and from a much cooler card. That means this could easily be 5 figures worth. He also has the original art from Serra Angel, but not the card, the comic cover, and that is worth 25k. He has another Legends original art "Shimian Nightstalker" for roundabout 10k, and the original for chain lightning for 60k$ (and for that prize you could get a set of beta, not gem mint, but light played should be doable). My guess for killer bees would be somewhere in between. I don't know how legendary that card today is, which largely dictates the prize. Chain lightning is of course a vintage staple, even more so in 93/94, and very recognizable. My guess is that the original for Serra Angel card design would be worth even more, since it not only has that cool factor of being such a famous card, but the artwork is also very pretty, while chain lightning pales in comparison. Don't get me wrong, still a cool picture. It is not a set of beta, but I bet it is A LOT closer then you thought.
@terryfeynman
@terryfeynman 6 жыл бұрын
@ Jay Kenley every now and then, yes. But nobody could have predicted that magic would still be around so many years later. As I said when I sold my collection I was reasonably sure that magic was dying, and wanted to sell them before to many other have the same idea and there are no buyers left. After legends it was downhill STEEP. I mean Legends, the Dark and Fallen empires, and you could get a full booster box for for 2.5 legends boosters, as for fallen empires, you would have to put like 50 bucks on top of a whole booster box to get a single booster of legends, and legends is the cheapest of the 3 first expansions. For a booster Arabian nights you could get 4 boosters of legends. Then came that chronicles debacle, ice age was a little bit upwards again, but not by that much. Many sets printed a lot later and in far higher numbers, like tempest for example, are worth way more then say the dark (I believe you could get 2 booster boxes of the Dark for a single one of Tempest, and might get some money on top) So the later boom of Magic was back then absolutely not foreseeable. Last but not least I was young and needed the money ;)

I didn't think you would be mocking me, I just tried to explain how it was back then cause not many people playing magic today have experienced that time. And a lot of it was awesome, like 2 friends and me bought together 1 box each of Legends, Arabians and Antiquities, and a few beta booster (paid for everything like 550 or so each). I even got lucky and drew a time twister, plus having beta lands/cards in your deck just looks awesome (the standard sets at the time where all white border, so it was quite obvious when you played with beta cards instead of revised/fourth). Opening these was really something special, a true collectors item at the time (let alone today.) So while I am sad I no longer have these cards, I made experiences back then many players today can only dream of. You know holding a pack in your hand, that could contain a Black Lots or a Mox, and opening it was damn cool. Would I do it for the kind of money they cost today ? Maybe when winning the lottery ^^

People have been saying that for over a decade but it's not as easy as you think. From the depths of the internet as to why: The dot pattern you see is a moire pattern, and is a result of the offset printing press process. There are four different colors of ink that are printed out as a set of halftone dots (a “dot screen”), and each screen is at a different angle. The interference pattern created by the overlaying of these differently angled screens is the moire pattern. When someone wants to produce a counterfeit card using an offset press, they are not going to have access to the original artwork that Wizards used to print the card, so they are going to have to scan a card. That scan will not have the same amount and quality of image data as the original art scan, and will likely need to be blurred to eliminate the original moire pattern in order to have an image that can be used to create a new halftone screen for the counterfeit. This means that close examination of the card’s art will likely always reveal some telltale differences, even if the rest of the layout gets more sophisticated.

Well, if WotC isn't reprinting some cards, the chinese will do it. This was obvious when they started the reserved list. You shouldn't be looking into Moxen so much, but rather into goyfs and fetches/shocks and all the modern playable stuff. I wonder how much fakes are sold there.
@MrNotBot

Lots of them on Ali Express. I bought basically everything expensive in Modern there and without scrutinizing the cards it's hard to differentiate them from real ones. Entire manabase, mox opals, lillis, jaces, bloodghasts, vials, bobs and snappys...All for 150ish eur.

Brian Cuellar one is a real card that has been rebacked, the other is a completely fake card. Rebacked cards have been around since at least the early 2000’s. Different people did it, some did it better then others.

@gamebot, you do not get the joke, someone claimed the signature would have been faked by Rudy, despite the fact that for most collectors a signature would mean it is no longer mint and thus less valuable. So it makes no sense whatsoever to do that, but that guy keeps making that claim and trying to get people to believe him.

I think you mean Jeremy from unsleeved media, and that was utter bullshit. He made ONE video about her calling her out for constantly begging people to pay money to her patron, which is fair criticism and not harasmant. Others then made fake claims about him and mass flagged his twitter etc. and THAT led to the ban with no evidence whatsoever. So the only person in that story who was really harassed was Jeremy

This is what happens when people invest in a card board card game. WotC needs to do away with the reserved list and make money. It obvious people like eternal formats and are willing to get fakes in order to play. Just mass print expensive cards so they can make money on the primary market. Support your player base and give what your customers want. If not fakes are going to flood the market anyways and the players are going to be the ones that suffer, like this poor person on this video
@sligovolts

Brent Armstrong exactly. As is, there's a huge inventive to print fakes, and we know they will only get better and better. Change the incentive and the mofos will resort counterfeit something else instead of cardboard prints.

They did that with chronicles, and it nearly meant the end of magic, since people where beyond pissed. Their sales plummeted,since people boycotted en masse, and I mean the guys that bought by the box, which back then was still quite rare. You cannot have a TCG with such a huge secondary market, when people cannot trust you. That is a mistake they will not repeat. It would be like making a new set where suddenly Goyf or Lilliana where common cards. People would stop collecting or investing in expensive cards, since they could suddenly drastically lose value. Destroy the second market and you destroy magic, since that market carries magic. A sizable chunk of their cards go to mass box openers and to people who buy by the box to break them down into singles and trade/sell. Destroy that and magic easily loses 30% profit at least practically overnight. As for fakes, why are there no good fakes o baseball cards ? Many of them are worth more then magic, are easier to fake, and yet nobody ever managed to get it good enough for pro's, and that will keep being like that
@TheKrismage2000
@TheKrismage2000 6 жыл бұрын
Brent Armstrong and it promotes greed. I mean, skip the power 9 , at least reprint the duals to increase player base in eternal formats. there’s no point in making Eternal Masters if the damn lands needed to play the format are all behind a glass counter.
@barmstrong003
@barmstrong003 6 жыл бұрын
Terry I never got into trading baseball cards but there was no game to them. So they were trading cards not a TCG. Magic is a TCG. They should focus the G of TCG and make a good game that people want to play not an investment portfolio. The reason there are so many fakes is people want to play the game but not spend $1000s to play competitively. It's going to get to a point where they will have to allow for proxies in competitive play if enough people want to play. So they will ether need to get rid of the reserve list or allow proxies. If they don't want to screw investors then allow proxies so people don't have to worry about getting good fakes and then investors don't have to worry about buying good fakes. WotC will never allow it because it decentivies people from buying their product. But again they are decentivizing more people from entering the game because to cost to enter their best formats are too high.

There was a particularly iconic card which had a 'Christopher Rush' signature, this signature had previously been shown to his ex-agent and was 'believed to be fake', he reconfirmed personally with a public post when people asked for more evidence and weren't convinced by the community input. It has been taken down from Ebay multiple times and keeps popping back up with "SIGNED by Christopher Rush Magic The Gathering MTG AUTHENTIC" in the title, which is about as close as you can come to saying "Authentic Signature" while keeping your butt safe from claims. Iirc the description also said "Signed by the LATE Rush". I belive it has also only been listed etc on ebay since rush passed, so take that how you may.

It's a bit ridiculous that you'd buy pieces of cardboard as investments when almost anything is better. It's really seedy and shifty what people do, that's what happens when the thing their replicating is a drawn picture of layered cardboard. Eventuality fakes will be unrecognisable for the most part. Buy cards because you like them not for financial value. And if you like the cards buy the damn proxies if their $2,000! I mean what a waste of money! That's a lot of money to literally throw down the sink for the smallest framed art work.
@DaPreach90

Michael Kasif a waste of money? You mean that colored paper with no intrinsic value whatsoever? Hmm trading useless paper for useless cardboard seems like a fair trade. Ben Franklin has crappy power and toughness for a vanilla creature anyway.

M S a real black lotus can have whatever feelings attached to it, but it's literally 1993 cardboard you're paying for. And yes all of those you mentioned are ridiculously silly. You're not buying THE artwork of the black lotus, the original, you're buying a rendered image. So it's not even the same then, it's worse than buying the original painting.

M S I'm a poor renting commie bitch for seeing a bad investment in my opinion, and thinking the logic to buying them is stupid in my opinion? People can do whatever they want. And I can say what I want. I'm not renting, in fact I've never had to rent in my life. I make money and I'm my own boss. I already do what I want to do in life and I'm 26. I have everything I've ever wanted and more. Do you think I'm complaining because I can't afford things? That's more a reflection of your projection than my actual opinion on the matter. Like I said buy cardboard if it makes you happy. I have an expensive foiled out cube, basically the only thing I've spent money for magic on. I don't value it for rarity, I value it for its functionality and joy it gives to the people I play with and myself as a custom prized possession in regards to magic. I think you're just angry I think your perspective is stupid. Sorry, opinions exist, we not in a "commie" world bro.

M S wasn't it you that said "fuck you for trying to make people what to think" and then tell me what to think? Magic has always been like anything else that people invest in. You make money or lose money. If you actually want to make money and remove your obsession for cardboard you will make more. People invest in magic because they like magic AND want to try make money. It's just a worse investment. If you think it's hard to believe I've never rented, have everything I want in life and doing what I want to do then I got no idea what to say. Is that really something to lie about? Not sure why you're so angry and trying to act like poverty is something to laugh about. On that topic, people would be a lot less poor if people used efforts to try help others than just invest every dime into slow returning pieces of cardboard. Is my opinion wrong? Do you really think I'm bitter or are you trying your best to just imagine that to make yourself feel better?

Well the property I'm on went from $95k to 2.1m from mid 90's to now. And your sentences are breaking down, I think you're actually trolling - not many people this thick, stupid or insecure to keep continue saying really random things like the MTG market is great. Well, this guy just got scammed out 2k or so. How was his investment? What do you do in a few years when there's such subtle differences from proxies it isn't even worth it? Like i said do what you want. I still think it's idiotic. If you want to do something I deem idiotic go for it. It's not changing my mind though, I'll invest my money on something else.
