The Best Schools for Computer Science

Very surprised by how wrong this list is by not including UIUC. We’re talking about one of the best CS programs in the country here. Although its overall ranking isn’t the best, UIUC is #5 for CS and ranked similarly for engineering.

Yah also purdue. Ik for cs uiuc is generally in the top 5 and purdue is top 20, but even for his engineering ranking videos we were nowhere to be mentioned as well

I bet University of Chicago is in error and it might be UIUC as University of Chicago is not on the top list for CS and UIUC is ranked #5 across the world for CS on many other portals.

Wow this list sucks. UDub is in the 30s? Madison in the 30s? Where’s Purdue? Uiuc? UM Amherst? Who even hires CS from Dartmouth 😂? Maybe the wall street banks where they’ll work in their basement IT. As a people leader who has worked at major tech employers for decades, I can say with authority that your university doesn’t matter as much as your ability to get through the technical interview process and articulate learnings from your summer internships. Also your personality and how decent you come across matters a lot. No one wants to babysit a mouthy 20 year old who doesn’t bring collaborative team spirit, GSD attitude, and humility to work everyday. Kids, you should work on your self and keep learning by doing. That’s what you really need. Good luck.

i was wondering if for certain of these highly ranked schools (like UT Austin) if the ranking is mostly related to their ability to place students locally and whether the name carries as much weight if you are interested in working elsewhere (like the northeast). For example, while not as highly ranked, would Vanderbilt, because of the ranking of the school overall, afford you a better chance at computer science jobs in the northeast? Thanks!

Currently , my daughter has got offer from 1-University of Sheffield for MSc in advance computer science and also 2- from Queen Mary university London for MSc in computer science She also 3- got offer for MSc in Artificial Intelligence from Royal Halloway university near London and 4- MSc in computer science from university of Liverpool . Can you guide whether to choose Sheffield because it’s ranked higher and my cousin stays in Sheffield with his family so would be safer for my daughter ? Or choose Queen Mary because it’s in London and that will have advantage of getting jobs and brand London ? Or shall we choose Royal Holloway, although not from Russel group, it’s ranked 32 in computer science in UKGuardian ranking. Or choose Liverpool because , compared to Sheffield it may have more exposure to industries. Which may help for internships and jobs Please guide.

2/25/23 now. I hope you have had the opportunity to check out other posts, in addition to this one, as you do important research re your college/university choices. The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign is highly-ranked for computer science (the subject of this post), but also for many other programs. At 84, a Champaign native, I am a 1960 grad, later on staff in two posts, first as a writer/editor, then as associate dean of campus programs and services. My alma mater, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is highly ranked re CS, Engineering, several other programs and overall. It's pretty obvious that Seattle is an S tier location with a CS degree let alone at udub Seattle's 9% acceptance rate. It's practically ivy but better for instate students
