To add onto someone else's explanation - the title of the song is a combination of 'whale' and 'alien' and the 52 is regards to the 52Hz whale. To be sure, the thing about whales is that they find each other to mate and socialize through their songs. But no other whale has been recorded near this one with the strange frequency, so scientist hypothesized that other whales can't hear his song or can't recognize him as one of them (like he's an alien) and so he's called the loneliest creature. I relate to this song so much whenever I seem to be the only one in my crowd who thinks about things a certain way, and it becomes hard to communicate when people just don't understand you. I don't know if you've listened to 134340 yet, but that also is based in a story about science - that's the number that was given to Pluto when it was downgraded from a planet. There's a whole lot of beautiful metaphor in that one too.

The whalien is a whale who's frequency is of 52 hertz "whalien *52*" no other whale can hear it because the others frequency is i think 10-30 hertz. And if you listen closely, you can hear the little high pitch sound, that is the whalien's call, i believe.
