@2:29 that's correct about the FR "house curve" for a car needing that extra amount at bass frequencies due to the masking effects of background noise. That FR curve looks WAY too smooth though, even for 1/3rd octave smoothing. If that's really what the system's FR is like, I'm impressed.

Weird, I have a v60 T6. I can cycle between steering modes via the steerwheel and putting it in dynamic mode revs the engine up to a standard 2000 rpm and makes the braking and suspension really tight.

I’ve driven both the v60 and v90 and you can definitely tell they have two completely different philosophies. The v60 is the sporty one while the v90 is excecutive, even the acceleration is muted. Same on my xc60 t8. I usually drive in pure electric, but sometimes you’re sitting at a stoplight and realize you need to get a quick start, or you’re in a hurry in rush hour traffic - power / dynamic mode makes the brakes and throttle response super aggressive.

Same with my XC90 T8, sport mode definitely stiffens the 4 corner air suspension, makes the throttle more responsive, and I think it tightens the steering a bit as well. I almost never use it, I'm always in either Pure, Dynamic, or AWD.

As a long time Volvo driver (had a '98 C70 T5 since 2011, but changed to a '98 V70 TDI in 2017) I'm giving a huge thumbs up. I might not be able to afford an S/V/XC90 soon, but I'm happy with my V70, although I might replace it with a petrol version (2.5T or T5) of the same generation. As for the audio system, Volvo has a tradition of having great audio quality. My C70 had Dynaudio speakers and a Dolby Surround decoder (the former were standard, the latter was an option), the second gen C70 had an optional Dynaudio system as well, which made me fall in love with the brand (okay, the car itself had a fair share in it too), and after ironing out the issues when switching to B&W, looks like the sound system is great again, although I still haven't heard the latest iteration yet.

The funny thing about steering assist is that they USED to have it on the steering wheel, you would activate cruise control and then could switch between regular cruise control, distance-keeping cruise control and steering assist but they actually got rid of that functionality when they went from their own sensus system to the google system.

Volvo sound systems, even the lower-end ones have always been exceptional. My 2014 V60 for example really delivers everything you need and even in a good balance, whereas many new cars nowadays sound very thin and "car radio like" if you will. I can even get the bass tones to vibrate the whole car without it sounding fake or cheap. And that's with the default model with zero upgrades.

I totally agree. This is actually an important decision for some people. If the upgraded stereo isn’t worth the money it can save you a big chunk of money. If it is you have to get it at purchase because most new cars you cannot upgrade the stereo anymore. So many car reviewers don’t even mention the stereo at all, Let alone provide analysis and graphs.

I absolutely love the graphs for the speakers being included especially with those detailed descriptions! The sounds system is super important to me and the detailed analysis is great. My only suggestion is to in the future not use red for the line when its against a black background like in the fr graph at 2:27, its quite hard to see for me. I'm colorblind so I'm not sure how bad it is for others, but I had to crank my brightness and squint to see on my phone!

5:40 I actually like this, trying to quickly switch gears it's pretty easy to miss it even if you are used to it, with this once you are used to it switching from drive to reverse 2 clicks is much less easy to mess up then sliding it and either sliding it too far into park or too little into neutral.

I have a 2011 S80 Inscription and a 2017 XC90 T8 Inscription and both have amazing sound quality, better than any other car I've been in. The clarity and separation of frequency ranges make picking out details so easy, and those subwoofers really make you feel the bass as a separate channel and not just shoved in there from the main speakers. Pair it when the excellent noise isolation inside the cabins (surprised that Alex didn't mention it in the review!) And it's just a super enjoyable experience!

The reason for the two click reverse/drive is that if you accidentally slap it while driving, it won't just slam you into reverse while doing 80 km/h. And if you need to slap it into neutral, which you usually do when something really wrong (engine stalled and you need to coast to the shoulder) is going on with the car, it's just one tap away because at that moment, you're probably already a bit panicky and not thinking 100% clearly. It's a well thought out safety feature - because it's Volvo, it's what you would expect.
@aleksikalli
@aleksikalli 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think new cars will go in to reverse/drive while moving. But when stopped in traffic you could accidentally change gears so it is a good safety feature. And I guess you get used to pulling twice on the gear lever with time.

I have watched the Top Gear/Grand Tour series no less than thrice, and also countless Motor Trend and C&D clips. This is not to claim that I am some kind of expert, but rather to give perspective to the position from which I am posting. I find Alex's takes on cars to be as entertaining (not counting TG/GT shenanigans), and more informative than the established automotive media options. Alex and Friends are able to convey the subjective feelings of owning the vehicle (communication skills) while also addressing the practical aspects (technical competence) of owning the vehicle. My only complaint with this video is that KZbin doesn't provide the option for two thumbs and two big toes up. I always considered Volvos to be the "safe and dull option" cars, but after this review I have added them to my list of potential daily driver/fun car options.

@@conorallen100 a hybrid is fine as long as you don't care for the battery which is crap anyways. 60km is like running on an almost empty tank. It still has a combustion generator/engine and motors. It's perfectly usable for a second hand vehicle. What you want to avoid is second hand EVs because those will most likely have an expired battery that you can't exchange for free.

I dig these car reviews from Alex, especially when he likes what the manufacturer did to make it great. Been ages since I've been in a Volvo. Dad would drive me around Vancouver in his trusty 240 wagon or we'd do weekend trips to Seattle in the 90's. Kinda miss that car.

volvo has historically made extremely unreliable engines. Same here, an overstressed 4 cylinder for about 90k cad is absurd. At that price, I would expect a v6 or something more reliable.

@@sarkaranish Volvos 2.4L inline 5 cylinder engines were and still are pretty much bulletproof. My D5 has 560k kilometrers on the odometer. Shame that the days of internal combustion engines are numbered but it is what it is. At least electric engines are simpler.
@DinKompis
@DinKompis 2 жыл бұрын
@@sarkaranish No they aren't those are the Ford Engines they were forced to use when they were owned by Ford. The 5 cylinder that was made in house by Volvo and use in their last gen of cars was great. And today you dont really NEED a V6 you'd just push the price north of a 100k probably. 4 cylinder with electric assistance more or less makes it extremely good enough and it's not supposed to be sporty any how with a V6.. It'd be a huge waste too considering all new Volvos are limited to 180km/h.

@@DinKompis Yeah they haven't built any engines in years, but when they did they were amazing. Now they have outsourced it and overstress the hell out of them making them mechanic shop queens. At this price point, I would expect both a v6 and a mild hybrid system, not a 4 popper with a turbo, a civic has that.

I have a 2017 Volvo S60 and it has just the premium audio system but it is truly as flat as you can get sound. There’s no fancy sound stage option but holy crap does it ever sound good. Other cars sound systems can brag about heavy bass or a powerful amp, but when it sounds so realistic like how volvo does it really is something special.

So you mean the best from the factory sound system? Because that title is either misleading or straight-up not true. There are people who spend more than that car is worth on just the speakers for their car that doesn't involve any other components for installation. Notice though I said what that car is worth not what it is selling for because that car is worth less than a quarter of what it is selling for. Unless they have a plan to give you free batteries to replace the ones that power the hybrid system because otherwise every year you're going to have a larger and larger percentage of your battery capacity drop off it's the same issue with full Electric
