The S3000 is the same block as the other 2.5L Merc racing engines - that's why I just clumped them all together and called them 2.5's. You could get a 2.5L Offshore... A 2.5L drag, or a 2.5L "F1" which was for tunnel hulls. The S3000 is not a 3L, it's a 2.5L with the same bore and stroke as the other 2.5L Merc racing engines. There was never a Mercury Racing 2 stroke that was rated at 400hp or anything close to 11k rpm. That's why I wrote that the Merc 2.5 and the OMC V8 were capable of those power levels WHEN HIGHLY MODIFIED. HELLO.
@csonkaperdido3 жыл бұрын
@@craigbielsky115 HELLO #2 the OMC V8 was not a racing motor - it was meant for bass boats mostly and larger offshore boats where twin 250's weren't enough... Because back then the highest hp outboard you could get besides the OMC or a designated RACING engine from Merc was 250hp. HELLO! Nobody put Merc racing engines on their fishing boat. People did put the OMC V8 on racing boats, but again - that WAS NOT IT'S INTENDED APPLICATION. It was an engine for bass boats and larger center consoles etc.

Thank you, VR! I really love your channel. Your enthusiasm for engines is so genuine and inspiring. It's interesting to see how the internal combustion engine has evolved and adapted to serve the very different needs of automobiles, airplanes, boats and motorcycles. Outboards are so extreme, since they need to produce maximum power for the very limited size and space available, much like motorcycle engines, or racing engines of all kinds. Growing up around boats, I never realized what absolute beasts hid beneath those covers!

You hit on a basic fact of marine design. For a displacement hull, the hull design is a limiting factor in the top speed of the vessel. Adding more power merely pushes the rear of the vessel deeper into the water and effectively does not increase speed. Planing designs are different,of course.
@justaguy57703 жыл бұрын
