@@movinmetal2596 I'm a big fan of Callaway and Lingenfelter. If John Hennessey wasn't a complete POS I'd be a bigger fan of his stuff. Thank you, VR! I really love your channel. Your enthusiasm for engines is so genuine and inspiring. It's interesting to see how the internal combustion engine has evolved and adapted to serve the very different needs of automobiles, airplanes, boats and motorcycles. Outboards are so extreme, since they need to produce maximum power for the very limited size and space available, much like motorcycle engines, or racing engines of all kinds. Growing up around boats, I never realized what absolute beasts hid beneath those covers!

The 2 stroke Mercury Racing 2.5L V6 engines are capable of turning 9000+rpm with a LOT of modifications... The V8 Evinrude is capable of turning over 10,000 rpm... Again though, that's with very extensive modifications.

@@csonkaperdidoHELLO......MERC S3000 TURNS 11,500 + AND MAKE 400+ HP WEIGHS ONLY 350 LB .....LOL WHY YOU THINK THEY STOPPED MAKING THE V-8....LOL 2.5 MERC WAS QUICKER LIGHTER CHEAPER TO RACE ETC.....V-8 WAS A ONE HIT WONDER!
@csonkaperdido
@csonkaperdido 3 жыл бұрын
@@craigbielsky115 WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME Also - WRONG. Merc S3000 was rated at 300hp and was Rev limited to 9000rpm or 9250. With modifications, yes, 11,000rpm is possible as is 400hp. The S3000 is the same block as the other 2.5L Merc racing engines - that's why I just clumped them all together and called them 2.5's. You could get a 2.5L Offshore... A 2.5L drag, or a 2.5L "F1" which was for tunnel hulls. The S3000 is not a 3L, it's a 2.5L with the same bore and stroke as the other 2.5L Merc racing engines. There was never a Mercury Racing 2 stroke that was rated at 400hp or anything close to 11k rpm. That's why I wrote that the Merc 2.5 and the OMC V8 were capable of those power levels WHEN HIGHLY MODIFIED. HELLO.
@csonkaperdido
@csonkaperdido 3 жыл бұрын
@@craigbielsky115 HELLO #2 the OMC V8 was not a racing motor - it was meant for bass boats mostly and larger offshore boats where twin 250's weren't enough... Because back then the highest hp outboard you could get besides the OMC or a designated RACING engine from Merc was 250hp. HELLO! Nobody put Merc racing engines on their fishing boat. People did put the OMC V8 on racing boats, but again - that WAS NOT IT'S INTENDED APPLICATION. It was an engine for bass boats and larger center consoles etc.

Volvo Penta stops the sales and production of Seven Marine engines. Inboard manufacturer must hate outboards because they always stop making them. In 1973, Volvo Penta acquired outboard production from Monark-Crescent and the U-22, Toward the end of the 1970s, however, competition from Japanese manufacturers became so fierce that sales started to show a loss and outboard engine production was discontinued.

You hit on a basic fact of marine design. For a displacement hull, the hull design is a limiting factor in the top speed of the vessel. Adding more power merely pushes the rear of the vessel deeper into the water and effectively does not increase speed. Planing designs are different,of course.
