My mom lived to 86. She died from ovarian cancer. My dad lived to 97. Passed from pneumonia. My mom always said she would rather wear out than rust out. I can still hear her saying, “ Get up and start moving around. You’ll feel better.” She was still driving from Minnesota to Arizona and back every year at eighty four. Dad stopped driving when his eyesight started to go. Nothing serious, he just didn’t think a seventy five year old man with cataracts should drive. Mom still had twenty-twenty when she passed. I’m 62. I remember my dad telling me when I was young to take care of my legs… “ you’ll need them more than you think when you get older ..” after my daily stretches and light weight lifts, I end with 3 sets of squats ! Been doing it for 20 years. A game changer!
@writerforlifeify Жыл бұрын
Squats!? I did that from age 15 to 31, first with only 30, then 60, then 100, then peaked at 500 within 15 minute sessions. Could speed-squat 100 in 1.8 min. Developed rock-hard quadriceps. Finally had to give up that nonsense as I was seriously eroding the cartilage in my (clicking) knees. What I did was crazy! Took me 6 months to rebuild my cartilage after 16 years of damage. But I still do some from time to time, modified versions, while swinging away on my Gazelle (google images of this pedal-type no-motor treadmill). Much easier on the knees to perform swinging squats. And more fun!

My grandma lived to be 104. She definitely got smaller as she aged, but even in "the home" where she spent her last two years, she was the menace because she was the one who was mobile. She could barely see and hear, her mind was definitely going, but she still figured out how to outwit the alarm in her chair (get out of it without it going off,) and at least once, she tried to go on a walk outside. When she was told the door would lock behind her, she said, "I'll just put my cane in it," (to prop it open). She took few supplements/medications, saw doctors for checkups but just didn't have a lot of issues to treat. She ate everything in moderation, didn't drink, had a strong faith in God and belief in helping/giving to others, she loved nature and got out in it to walk until it got unsafe to do so. I'm not doing nearly as well as she did (best I can tell, she also didn't complain,) and I don't want to live as long as she did.

My grandfather lived to 97. Ate poorly, drank beer and smoked from the age of 8 til he was in his early 60s. In his 60s he changed his diet and quit smoking. But he was always fit, was a cyclist and swimmer, body surfed until he was 93. He always had a happy skip in his step, even on the day he died. He was physically and mentally healthy up until his last few years and got a bladder infection that couldn’t be treated. Suspect he may have had prostate cancer. His wife, my grandmother never did a single bit of exercise in her life and was overweight - she lived to be 100. My other grandmother is now 98, also has never done any exercise, spent her life watching TV and had a terrible diet. Longevity is in the genes.

And yes I do resistance for my quads on the leg extension machine, so I have pretty muscular thighs for an old lady (I owe a lot of that to figure skating earlier in my life). I fast almost every day 12 to 16 hours. Eat pretty clean most days, low carb. I take 10 different supplements including D3 and K2. And I can jump up from a chair in an instant. People mistake me as being in my 50s and that always makes my day! I’m trying my best to live as long as possible! All of these paradigms get throw right out the window when you’ve encountered what I have in the last year: I’m 61 years old, and I’ve been battling Hemochromatosis the last 4 years and had gotten my Ferritin down from an initial 4580 to 24 most recently. I was feeling good last summer (2021), but then last December my Blood Pressure fell off the face of the earth - to 90/40. I went to my Cardiologist and he just dismissed it as that I had lost 150lbs on Keto. I went from 321lbs to 170lbs in the last 4 years. I went for a 2nd opinion, and we found out my Aortic Valve was regurgitating. My Aortic Valve was replaced via traditional Open Heart Surgery. The surgeon did the traditional sternotomy because he suspected my Mitral Valve might be damaged too. When he got “inside” my heart he found my Mitral Valve to be good. But, he did find that my Aortic Valve had a 4-5mm hole in one of its leaflets, plus the valve was congenitally defective in that it was bicuspid and not tricuspid. I had a bovine valve implanted. Now recently, I had an endoscopy/colonoscopy and I had 3 polyps removed from my stomach and 4 polyps removed from my colon. All benign, Thank God. But, I got a GI bleed from the endoscopy and I lost so much blood that it sent me into anemia. My Hemoglobin went down to 9. I’m fighting back now by eating liver, liverwurst, beets, etc. And I’ve been able to get my hemoglobin up to 10.5 now. So, you never know what’s going to send you down a slippery slope of decline, and always get a 2nd opinion from Doctors when you’re not satisfied with their prognosis.

That means I rely primarily on my quads, glutes, and core. Since I was a teenager I have enjoyed regular weightlifting and other physical activity to stay healthy including lots of stretches, yoga and other balancing exercises, walking forward and backwards, high intensity interval training, dancing, etc. Adding daily life things like taking the stairs as much as possible and not helping myself out of a seated position is enormously helpful in maintaining my strength and balance and I try to encourage others to do the same as much as they are able.

It has always intrigued me as I listen and watch people my age and younger, age poorly around me, I’ve noticed how they talk negatively about aging seems to be the common theme. For example, my 31 year old coworker thought we were around the same age, I am 11 years older, but I heard her talk about how “old” she was when she hit 30 and then 31, and how her body is already “sagging” at that age… it’s all about the mind set of what aging is to you and what you’re truth is in relation to it.

The old ladies on the street used to talk about my father when he was child. They were predicting that he would die young - maybe not make 20. He's outlived his older and younger siblings and is now 93 and still as sharp as a tack. Good luck and good health!

Good vid. Very informative. I'm 75, and it feels like I've aged more in the past year than in the previous 10. Definitely getting weaker, but can still sit and get up from the floor ok, and grip strength is very good. Play tennis a couple times a week, do dumbbells and kettle bells a couple times a week, bicycle or walk to everything within about a 4-mile radius of my home. Farther than that and I take a bus or get a ride. During the past year I've been diagnosed with various back and hip problems, osteopenia, and arthritis. Seems like I need significantly more sleep than a year or so ago. I've had Crohn's disease for about 15 years, but take Humira and it's been in remission for over two years. During the past year my vocalization has become markedly weaker. That is, I struggle to talk as loud as I could even just a year ago. Anyway, thanks for your videos. I went ahead and subscribed. Your presentations are clear and I can understand what you're saying. Plus, a friend of mine who is a health and fitness nut recommended you.

After taking the Covid shot I couldn’t get up from my chair. Seating and getting up from the toilet seat was the most agonizing experience. My body was extremely inflamed all over. Even rolling my eyes used to be so excruciatingly painful. I felt like I was 150 years old. Only this week, I was able to get up with out holding on to something. It’s scary to feel like this at only 50yrs old.

Thank for your explanations on sarcopenia, unfortunately I have developed that along with other physical traits of stress, i.e excessive fat in abdominal area. I started taking nutritional yeast a month ago and did notice a little more energy. Two nights ago I started to take another dose before bed, as you suggested for better sleep. It helped some, but it mainly has addressed my palpitations at night. This is wonderful, because lately they have been very bad that I wake up sweating. I don't do well with anti anxiety or depression meds. So I hope this will be a permanent fix. I am also hypothyroid.

Dr. Berg I totally hear you! Long ago, I used to think people in their 50's were so old and aged. I never ever forget my once elderly neighbor passed away from colon cancer passed away at the age of 54 and I thought then she was olllddd.! I'm now 55 and I have a totally different perspective. I feel great. I can still sit on the floor and stand up very quickly without using my hands. I can still lie on the floor and still, get up onto my feet without using my hands. I IF as well. I used to work at a medical receptionist at a busy hospital and would glanced at their ages and was surprised how aged most of those people were in their 60's..... with canes, w/c, walking slowly. I now look to older healthy people for role models. You look fantastic at 58! Hey, Robert Iger is now 71 and he's the new proven fact....70 is now the new 50!

My mum lived alone at 96, very social in the community, didn’t believe in taking medicine, worked on farm and during the war, as a land army girl, and ate sparingly. I grew up on eggs, salted meat, milk from the cow, root veg, pickles, beef dripping, Cawl - a Welsh soup made of bone broth and fatty cuts of meat. I remember the whole low fat thing coming in and I remember thinking “but i don’t know anyone that is fat in my community, no one “!!
@brendakell43042 жыл бұрын
Yes! There was a seemingly-logical idea that eating fat made you fat. Also that eating cholesterol (e.g. eggs) raised your cholesterol. This is similar to the seemingly-logical theory that calories in > calories out led to weight gain and the mantra "a calorie is a calorie, no matter it's source." This is dead wrong! Calories coming from carbs affects my weight much more than calories from fats and protein.

Around 20 years ago, I had a job doing housekeeping and grocery shopping for elderly and disabled people. At first I was baffled by the fact that some of the youngest clients were in the worst health, especially because they were non-smokers who prided themselves on "healthy" home cooking. But there was one unusual abstention most of them seemed to have in common that gave me a clue as to why they might be in such poor health. They said their doctors recommended LOWERING their salt intake, but the doctors must have failed to inform them that they still required at least a certain MINIMUM amount of salt to maintain good health. Apparently that group of young, but very tired and weak clients thought that if LESS of something is good, then NONE must be better, because they had no salt whatsoever and said not to add it to their shopping lists because they NEVER use any salt!

It goes back to "form follows function". If you don't use it you lose it. I'm 46 and have been working out for 27 years now. Sit to stand test is simple because I do a lot of box squats, deadlifts, regular squats, leg extensions and other exercises. It is sad watching others around me like my brother who is 4 years younger. When he goes to get off the floor he has to roll around and really try hard. I basically do a burpee and jump up with ease. I love the poster that says "you don't stop lifting when you get old, you get old when you stop lifting".
