Hey Miss Moose...You and the radio make a very cute couple!..haha.....Think of it's history....the elderly man who owned it for all those years, then being tossed out in the trash after he died, and then being saved by you.. I am proud to have played a part in making it work again........This is why I love old radios..so much history... On another note, this radio is very susceptible to RF interference ( computers, lights, wall warts, etc, that create RF noise which can be heard..... hopefully you can experiment with the antenna and it will play as best as possible. Regards, Buzz

Last night I chuckled to myself as I thought that the sports channel was appropriate... I could picture the man of the house having "the game" on or listening to sports in his own area of the house. So I think it was rather fitting!

As a little girl on a farm in Iowa, I remember a battery operated radio (the farmhouse had not yet been wired with electricity) that was used for special broadcasts. The weather and farm market reports were part of noon news. My hardworking mom would try to listen to a soap opera titled My Gal Sunday, and evening programs that were famous made that radio so precious to our household. I can relate well how Buzz has a love for these life changing radios.

There was a remarkable older man who I knew for only a few years. And made my life that much richer. He died at age 98-ish. He once spoke with great reverence of his mother and the first radio his large family got. Only one person could listen to it at a time. Because of headphones? I don’t remember! Anyway, he said his mother got a big glass mixing bowl and put the headphones in it. And, voila! The sound was magnified! I’m not sure if I’m telling the story correctly, but with the respect and love he spoke of his mother, the poignancy of the story was a powerful one to me. He was one in a thousand gems. And credited his longevity to the glass of scotch he had every day! My mother passed last Christmas Eve. Also at the age of 98. One of her favorite stories was listening to Little Orphan Annie on the radio. On her birthday, her name was actually announced in the birthday section of the show. It was one of the few big thrills in a not so great childhood.

That is so beautiful! What an amazingly kind gesture. I hope the guy, who's passion it once was, is looking down and feeling so happy right now that a fellow radio restorer has worked his magic on it. Not only does it work but it's going to be used and loved again. I wonder who originally had it and what they looked like. It looks like a 20's deco style so my imagination is going to that period with it's original owner. Great story and I feel so happy that you've shared this with us x

Steven Wright has a joke that goes something like, "I have a friend who's a radio announcer. You can't hear him talk when he walks under a bridge." I was so happy when one of our cars came with satellite radio. My kids finally got the joke and experienced that moment of "AM" silence. Usually happened as the murderer was being announced or the Dj was reading the lottery numbers. :). Great job saving it, Renee - and restoring it, Buzz. I'm so happy that in this day of VoIP and circuit boards that people still appreciate these one-time, almost miraculous contraptions. I will admit, though, a cell phone with tubes would be a bit unwieldy. And hot.

Renee, re-check the tube and see if the tube replacement has the exact number as the one that got broken as you need the same to replace it, also it sounds like the radio needs new caps (capacitors thus the humming noise - maybe something came loose in the shipping as it sounded great after he finished it - any radio repairman can help you with that. I commend Buzz for putting a clear back plate on the radio so Moose's fingers dont get in there when its on as you might get a jolt! Some of these radios didnt have backs for better cooling as the tubes do get hot at times (good idea Buzz with the air holes!) Enjoy the radio!

Buzz sent the replacement tube, I'll have to do a little more checking inside to make sure nothing is loosey goosey. Perhaps a piece of glass is wedged somewhere, as there was glass all over inside and I thought I was able to get all of them out.

I bet it is the Auburn! Very nice re-birth! Real fine video into the past...never lose your love of history! Although I have donated some 48 restored table radios to the Museum of American Heritage in Palo Alto, Ca., I still have a fine collection of sets. Recently was given a 1912 Victor Victrola in stunning quartered oak, sounds great with my collection of early Victor recordings of the 1903-1924 period! Will be getting two more machines as well as the collection of 1926-1938 tin plate Lionel Trains, from my late friend's estate. Don passed away at are 87 in September. Planning that floor layout featuring the Lionels this Christmas. Don was a dedicated Victrola and toy train collector. Sadly, most young people have little or no interest in history or vintage items. Most of us are gray or bald who collect and research, you, Renee are an exception, young and historically minded! And definitely not bald!

Chapeaux bas to Buzz. What a true gentleman and wizard craftsman. It warms the cockles of the heart hearing about others with the same passion for history stepping up to bat for you. Fortune favours the prepared, doesn't it? Those older radio sets are classic architecture and design, from an era of quality. I am particularly green with envy, Renée, that you can enjoy such a beautiful artifact - that still works! - on your shelf. Now I know what I want next. My folks had an old AM radio a bit more recent to that, when I were a lad. What a travesty to think it probably ended its days in the landfill. Doesn't bear thinking . . . Between you, me and the gatepost I half-expected something like FDR speaking about 'a day that will live in infamy' coming out of the speaker. (Yeah. I watched a lot of Sci-Fi shows way back . . . ) Much gratitude for sharing.

I bought a big Zenith radio years ago, one of those furniture sized ones, probably early to mid 40's. I plugged it in while it was still in the back of my truck. After it warmed up, it picked up a baseball game, clear as a bell. It could have been coming from the 40's, that crackily tone coming thru the speaker. Very eerie, yet very cool. Love the old radios, and record players. Great job Buzz, and Renee!
