The state of the film industry in our culture is abysmal. Formula films, do what works, and do it ad nausea. Don't try anything new. And they do love to put the music sound level through the roof so you have to turn up the sound to hear any dialogue and turn it down when the music plays. Ridiculous.

You are right, if you only look towards big budget productions. Intelligent movies which do things differently, have interesting angles and so on are risky. This is why they can only be realized in low budget productions. We got lucky with Interstellar and Arrival, those were exceptions. If you are going to make a 200mio + movie, it is always soulless, riskless and created for the average moviegoer. Because average means that many more will like it than an exceptional mind fuck with stellar character development

@@MMichallis Sum it up: Some comic strip has a story where some superhero guy dressed in silver or white fights some other superhero guy dressed in grey or black and entire cities around them get destroyed. Meanwhile both superheros are moderately inconvenienced and you think one of them is dead till the next film where they spring back to life and maybe change sides to fight some new superhero guy dressed in grey or black. Meanwhile more cities are destroyed. The real story here is about the X-Build team. Dedicated construction workers who make buildings appear overnight for superheros to destroy everytime there's a fight.

A challenge to everyone seeing this: For 2019, don't go to any movies that are sequels, prequels, remakes, reboots, or comic-book superheroes. Insist on something original. You'll be better for it, and maybe someone in Hollywood will get a clue. Note that we have two large cinemas near me, which show 18 different movies at any one time. Sometimes NONE of the movies qualify to my above-stated requirements. Sometimes only one. But don't give up hope.

The lesser executives go around pretending to be in the same class as Jobs, Musk, a few others, when in fact they are overpaid dullards. Where are the Hollywood visionaries? It's an important business. It exports our culture. It brings in money. If we don't stay at the cutting edge of creativity, they will soon be predicting its death. I'm not being unnecessarily alarmist. Something structural has happened to show business. Other countries are ready to take the lead. We need to fix this, and there isn't more than 5 years to do it. I think it needs more diversity and less nepotism - the same things a lot of bankrupt businesses needed but never got.

@@CarLa-dn9ms Alita ranks right up there, just the story is Japanese in origin. Honestly, though, it doesn't really show. The story is about a cyborg girl waking up in a dystopian post-semi-apocalypse future with no memory. She's been found in the junkyard by a cyberdoctor, Dr. Ido, who fitted her with a new body (barely anything was left of her, a miracle her brain was still alive). This happens in Iron City, the poor lower slums sitting in the literal shadow of Zolum, the last of the Sky Cities (all others were destroyed in a war). Movie, anime, and first section of the manga (basically if anime are TV and movies, manga are comic books) are all about her discovering a little about who she is... and what's wrong with the world.

Holy CGI compilation Batman! Soooo many special effects! Think I will pull out my 2001:A Space Odyssey and Alien DVDs and watch great sci-fi as it should be made. Although, there have been excellent sci-fi movies where CGI complimented a well made movie, i.e., Matrix, Aliens, T2. (Much like today's product packaged music artists, where digital effects can make a crow sing sweet rainbows. Think I will pull out my 25th anniversary Woodstock or Deep Purple Live in Tokyo albums).
