i appreciate your attention to detail and your understanding and use explanation of measuring tools... the poor machine work is exactly why i DO NOT rebuild engines, period... good used goes in every time, simply cannot charge enough for a quality rebuild. I built my tdi tacoma over nine years ago using a $100 BHW shortblock that had standing water in the cylinders (surface rust? check!) and an ALH head from a hydrolocked (runaway) motor $150... just cleaned the two up and slapped em' together using a BHW head gasket. A few other things had to be done to make the BHW happy as a VE but that was over 160k miles ago and it does not use one quart @ 10k changes. More power to ya' on getting down with the minutiae of a proper rebuild....good channel, nice build.

Hi Austin, congratulations for the great job, I learned a lot from you, I have a question: Why the machinist decided to get a new block instead of changing the liners one more time for the one that you had first? how can I decide when it’s better to change a block for another one?

I have a 1.9 TDI Jetta 03. My engine was rebuilt and now it's throwing the oil warning. It only does it like 10-15 minutes after fully warmed up and smokes a bit more at that time and not while warming up. If the pickup is clogged or the clearnce is not correct will it trigger the warning any any operating temperature or only when it fully warms up ?

8:16 can someone explain to me why Austin says to "tilt it forward" after the bore guage was perpendicular to the walls?? Im thinking that by tilting it forawrd you would get a false reading since you are increasing the distance from point "a" and point "B" I even drew this out on autocad to see how much the distance would change and it indeeed changes.. Am i missing something here?

@@austinniemela once bitten twice shy i had a reputable buisness that i was assured and seen there work would do a top notch headwork on a cylinder head to destroy my cylinder head when i asked who was gonna replace it i was told its tough luck and the head wasnt good in the first place they still took my money and still to this day refused to accept any liabilty for the damage they caused

Measure measure measure... you said it... oversized ring gap .. blow by... out of round bore... ah yeah... you stated it correctly. Good shop covering the cost of his mistake... if all is good and turns out right... plug his business in return. Sounds like a torque plate is a future investment....

make sure he doesn't give you one of those made in china alh blocks. Machine shops have been making mistakes a long time. Back in the late 70's our local machine shop in nor cal installed the cam bearings backwards in my AMC amx motor and the mechanic assembling the motor noticed it and sent it back

They agreed they over bored the block. How does that address the eliptical cylinders. Not being a smart ass, I don't understand. Shouldn't the cylinders be round ether way?
@ventura9513
@ventura9513 4 жыл бұрын
Gday mate,,, from memory the bores were egg shape, fatter in the middle than the top and bottom of the bore,, you're right to say they should be round after being bored on a machine,, but my guess is they honed the bores by hand which put them out of whack,, cross hatching is another prescise procedure and easy to take out more material if not being careful,

@@nationalelectric6507 I agree, maybe an apprentice or someone new has done it, their work wasn't checked afterwards either otherwise they would have picked this up,,, either way its gonna cost the machine shop,, new block, machining and time, but it will be a learning curve for whoever made this boo boo,,
