The Game Boy Advance was a groundbreaking portable, but in a fitting echo of its granddaddy, the original Game Boy, the hardware itself left a LOT to be desired. May seem strange to say it, but the GBA is probably the absolute worst way to play GBA games.
Today, thankfully, there are several ways to play the GBA's extensive 1500+ games library.

I got an OG GBA modded with a ITA (DSi bottom screen) display and it has all the positives of the 101 screen, with better colors and less ghosting. It's great.

Make sure it can charge!!! Also, for me it'd have to be GPD XD + even though mine hasn't been delivered yet. TV playability? Jeez, it's awesome. I feel like I need to make a MP5 Player vs GPD XD + video once it gets here. I have an MP5 player which is like the extreme cheapo version of the GPD XD +, and it does basically the same stuff but on a much lower level, running an operating system I can't find the name of, and not able to play as powerful retro games (it caps out at SNES and Genesis games). It's been improved since I got the original X6, though, which froze on me, and my little brother got my first MP5 player which has the older system and is still a bit inferior to my current MP5 player. They look like PSPs and PS Vitas for anyone interested. Search on ebay "PSP Vita 8GB 32 bit handheld gaming system" and you'll see it. You need all those oddly generic keywords for it to work. Mine is a blue PS Vita looking one with the words "MP5 4x Digital video camera auto optical zoom" at the bottom (I'm mentioning that since it's the best kind of the three I've had total, and I'm not sure if the color, design and words on the bottom mean those same ones will be just like the one I have, but it's always worth a shot :) Want more details about the system and what it can do, let me know. I'd make a KZbin video about it, but there's plenty of those already for many different types of the device. But not a video for MP5 player vs GPD XD +! It's like a battle between the older, poorer hobo type brother and the younger, rich and powerful brother XD

Vegito Charmara assuming it even boots into the Gameboy logo u may need to clean the contacts for both the cartridge and system. If it doesn't boot, u probably put the screen ribbon cable in upside down. It's a fun mod once you get the hang of it. Good luck! 🎮😉👍

I don't like emulating the GBA on the PSP cause 1. The interface is awful looking 2. It feels odd emulating Nintendo games on a Sony handheld and 3. Gameboy Advance do not work 100% on the PSP. So I prefer something more official feeling like the Anbernic RG351P which feels like Nintendo quality design and controls and has basically 100% GBA compatibility.

Good Christ those things look huge and hefty. I'm not sure if the controls are too big or the keyboard's too small. Honestly, the GPD XD Plus is as far as I'm willing to go with size of controls and all, and this WIN 2 version just looks too big (unless my bluetooth controller can still do the same stuff on it). It's getting close in size to a laptop that it doesn't have the same "tiny portable device I can watch HD videos and play games on a TV with" feel to it. And it's SUPER expensive!!!

It's worth mentioning that the premium version of the MyBoy emulator for Android supports multi-player via Bluetooth, so with the GPD XD+ you can even trade Pokémon with your friends, or fight with them, getting the full GBA experience. Plus, only one premium emulator is required, the others can join to the multi player session with the free version.

I honestly loved the gameboy micro. I still have mine from when it first came out. But the design of the original gameboy advance was my favorite console. The screen was a great size, yet, it was its downfall. Fortunately, the community is so great and has so many dedicated people to keeping it alive and modding great screens. Yeah, I got one when I was in like grade two so me and my friend could play Pokémon yellow together, now I typically use my psp cause it’s easier than lugging a breifcase (for my carts) around. Also super Mario 64 is playable with sound on the 3000 and the new deadalus update!

On mine, N64 works all right, has just a bit of stutter and jitter but otherwise runs at good speed. But there's a huge problem: for some reason the control pad can't recognize any inputs for the C buttons (the four small yellow ones). Same with the L and R triggers when emulating Dreamcast (but my bluetooth controller sometimes fixes that issue)

Absolutely loving my modded ips screen GBA. Works great and feels brilliant in the hand, doesn't kill my phone battery, not as thick as an sp or ds, plays my old gb games too and fits in my pocket just fine.

Modded 3DS with fixed GBA cias, because you get to play GBA games in a nearly ghostless display (unlike in AGS101, micro or NDS). Also, the 3DS runs GBA games natively, because it has the GBA hardware built in, as opposed to what the guy says in the video. On the downside, it's a lotta work to convert/find the proper cias and you don't get 100% compatibility (for technical reasons such as lack of support for games that had special cartridge hardware and alternative save methods).

So many great choices, and I always go back to my PSP since it's just one of the best portable emulators around (PS1 version of Tempest X is my fav), but for GBA I still like my XL with DSTWO flash card. I took my entire library of GB, GBA and DS games and put it all on one Nintendo device. Haven't tried the 3DS card that's come out, but the DSTWO has worked great. BTW, I'm a recent transplant from Southern California to the Portland Oregon area and used to work at Sony Online! :)

I am always thinking about the gpd as Izzy bring it to light in every way possible, but then I remember that my Android phone is better in specs and in Android version. If I want a controller experience, I can have with me a controller as small as 8bitdo zero that will allow me to play any 16-bit generation game and is more convenient then carry the gpd and my mobile phone. If you really want the best, you use Game Boy Interface instead of the Game Boy Player software, a Hori controller as StempBeefgnaw1 said, a GCHD unit OR the original GameCube RGB component cables, hook those up to an HDTV, and you are pretty much set. My personal setup is Game Boy Interface on Game Boy Player (GameCube), a Hori controller, the GCHD (a GameCube HD output device) outputting 240p to my OSSC upscaler which triples each line perfectly producing a 720p output (the same maximum resolution as my TV, so no downgrading occurs). The best best way to play that is as of yet unreleased is Woozle's GBA Consolizer, which literally outputs 720p directly from an original GBA device: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ennHq313ftd3hJI

GBA injections on a 3DS is the definitive way to play that doesn’t use the original hardware, I think. Runs them natively, so full speed, no input lag, compatible with the entire GBA library, and all the benefits of playing on a relatively modern Nintendo handheld. The control layout translates perfectly because it’s the same as the GBA layout, just with more buttons. You can even play them in their native resolution by holding start or select whenever you boot up a GBA game.

Perfect if you don't mind missing out on the pixel grid. Instead, you get these horizontal scanlines that are impossible to un-see once you notice them. I agree it's the next best thing though.

Maybe for you but horizontal scanlines push it far far away from being the best, not to mention being entirely unable to play games like Yoshi topsy turvy and warioware twisted without a patch that removes the entire point of the game.. as well as the roulette of 3ds screens with the majority being TN, worse than an IPS gba In terms of “definitive,” the best picture quality you can get with original hardware like you mentioned is with a Gameboy player running the gameboy interface homebrew application, or on an original GBA with an ips screen (honorary mentions include gba consolizer but it’s goofy to me lol)

As a huge racing game fan I love the VD-Dev racing games on the GBA. Those guys really knew how to push Nintendo hardware to its very limits.

I was emulating on a modded Wii up until recently, my friend got me a wireless controller for my phone: total game changer! Sometimes I still prefer the TV, but that's usually when it comes to playing SNES. When it comes to the GBA, a smart phone and a wireless controller with a phone slot is the way to go imo 👍🏼 Lots of love from Texas, Izzy! Edit: Ok, that's it, I'm gonna have to get a GPD XP!

i know ur comment is old but back then the psp was the shit.. until like 2007-2010 ish after the iPhones etc started releasing. but now the Vita beats the psp by faaar especially if hacked. Hell the Vita is arguably the best emulation machine.. more comfy than even the switch

For less than $50 you can get an RS-97, an emulator clone of the Revo K101, flash CFW to it and have an excellent device to play GBA and other consoles. There's a very simple way to vastly improve the triggers on the Revo K101 and RS-97 by adding springs to them and the PCB. Some people use springs from mechanical keyboard switches but I just cut a pen spring down to size. I love my OG GPD but it's not nearly as pocketable as the RS-97. Taking little breaks through the day to play some Persona 2: OS on the RS-97 is an excellent experience.

@@mauryj.3415 I'd love to find a PSP slim for sub $50 anymore. Even before modding the RS-97 triggers I didn't have issues with it like Izzy stated with them sticking (YRMV), the springs just give them a little more weight.

Me personally, I took my og GBA and modded in an ags 101 screen, glass panel, speaker amp, and a rechargeable battery pack from retromodding.com (didn't buy everything from them, just the battery and speaker stuff) and paired it with a GBA X5 Everdrive. Far from the cheapest solution, but quite effective and very happy with the results. In all reality, everything past the 101 screen is unnecessary cherries on the top, og GBAs go for about $20 and screen kits (the screen, the glass front, and ribbon adapter) about $50 on ebay. For $70, you get an excellent system to play GBA games on.

I dont know how cheap this solution is, but a PSP costs about 20 bucks, you can mod it for free, plus you can buy PSP games for like 1 buck, and play some modern AAA titles too, such as need for speed, god of war etc.

yeah, $20 is far cheaper than what I spent, which was a collective total of about $250-$300. It can be done a lot cheaper if you don't get the bells and whistles though.

The Snes style hand drawn clean pixel art look has always been my favourite style and the GBA is packed with games giving that quality old school style. Of course there are plenty of shonky 2.5D stuff too but hey, you take what you can get.

great vid man! came across a device i haven't heard of yet. Been rocking my 2003(year when i got it) GBA ever since. i played a ton of hours on it too. legit 6 hours a day when i was a kid. The only thing that has failed me over the years was the A button which i never got fixed until... Decided to mod that GBA in late 2019 which is now laying besides me on the desk and never leaves this house just because of the fact that its a piece of emotional history. over the years i bought and still own the first revision of the 3DS, the 2nd the 3DS XL and the latest "new" 3DS XL just because this device for whatever reason suits my needs? Some time later got myself a switch which i do play on dont get me wrong and, strangely enough today was the first time i heard about the GPD XD.. and i kinda want one now.. i live in the Netherlands btw. your English is really good though :) dont worry. The GameCube was definitely the best way to play GBA and even Gameboy games. And yes the title does NOT mention portability at all, just the best way to play the games. The GameCube was the first console to be able to play every Legend of Zelda game released at the time since the original NES (LoZ and AOL on GBA, LA on gameboy, Oracles on GB Color, OoT and MM on the collectors disc, WW and FSA on GameCube, minish cap on GBA, and even Twilight Princess. Oh wait never mind, it couldn’t play A Link to the Past. Um, or did they release that for GBA?

My favourite GBA game is without a shadow of a doubt, Pokemon Emerald 💕 I honestly love playing on an emulator (VBA-M) on PC with an Xbox One controller. It handles full screen scaling brilliantly, runs flawlessly and supports trading/ battling between multiple instances on the same PC! Plus the XBone controller has one of the best D-pads in the game. And as far as portable goes, I still use my trusty Advance SP 👌🏻
