Romina is hugely underrated. People confuse her being balanced with being "simple." It's not Romina's fault that nearly every other boss in the DLC has nonstop, spastic, 24-hit, hyperarmored, hitbox-defying, stagger-inducing, status-ailmenting, heat-seeking, nigh-undodgeable true combos that only offer you one counterattack, which you had better not miss because the boss will immediately run away to the other side of the arena.

I have some things to say about the takes on Metyr. I think the buildup to the boss was amazing, it's not just traveling through the desolate ruins, but if you listen to Ymir's dialogue the whole way through and learn more and more about the fingers and what he thinks adds a layer of anticipation for what is at the end of the quest. I also liked the progression, sure, the ruins do take up a bigger part of the map then they should, but the atmosphere is just so alien and it makes you wonder what happened, and the cherry on top was learning that the third ruin was underneath the cathedral the whole time. Good video though.

I think the aesthetics, arena, and lore aspects are all pretty great relating to that boss. But to me, the questline progression didn't make much sense. Never felt like we had a reason to kill Metyr, other than "I guess this is what we do now." The atmosphere around the ruins is great, but if you spent 30 plus minutes looking around for stuff to do or find there, it becomes disappointing. But my main problems mostly stem from the quest, like, we do our fetch errands, hear some good lore, then when we go to the final area he asks, and we kill the things that are hostile to us, he gets mad? Maybe I missed some details?

agreed, i find the complaints about those areas abit weird, i mean theyre all just flat ground and exploring them takes 20 minutes tops, less on horse back, thats barely considered an area, ive spent more time in side dungeons than that, theyre obviously just atmospheric quest areas and making them a linear dungeon like old souls or the legacy dungeons wouldve killed the atmosphere.

@asherking1594 ай бұрын
except the horse combat in this game is tedious and boring. It's great as a means of traversal, even in boss fights I think it's fun, but as soon as you start actually swinging a weapon on horseback it feels awful. What I value most in this game is variety. I like using many different mechanics and tools at my disposal to find creative and interesting ways to kill a boss. Even if you couldnt be knocked off the horse, why would I want to limit myself to swinging a sword 1 of 2 ways tediously on horseback when I have a full arsenal to choose from on foot. It's a fundamental flaw in the core game mechanics that cant be fixed by simply making the horse more viable and easier to beat a boss with. Sorry I went off on a rant about the horse in this game. Truly I think it's one of the best horses in any game ever, but again only in traversal. Really Torrent is more of a big, magical billy goat but I digress

18:14 when I fought him I remember clearly that it is totally possible to dodge Gaius's charge attack by simply rolling into him when he gets so close and that worked for me
@asherking1594 ай бұрын
yeah actman talks about how people who complain about the camera really just have a skill issue, not realizing his complaints about gaius are born from his own skill issue. I will concede that rolling into the massive horns of a giant boar charging full speed at you may not be the most intuitive thing in the world at face value, but this is typically how you dodge most attacks in from's games so at this point the idea shouldve at least crossed his mind to try. It's also very easy to do with light rolls
@sevirakalau21714 ай бұрын
@@asherking159 In his defense the timing for rolling behind the charge is pretty strict. when I was first trying to avoid the move I tried to roll through it and got hit anyway and I waited quite awhile to dodge. At that point I assumed there's just something I'm not getting and dodged it with blink bolt. After fighting the boss again I got the timing down but i can see how other people who are a bit quicker on the trigger wouldn't be able to dodge through him
@ojgsk8ter2 ай бұрын
You can also roll to the right if you time it correctly. It’s a highly choreographed move but pretty tight window, which is of course where the challenge comes from. I could only dodge that move about 50% of the time due to the timing window. I thought Gaius was pretty decent. He’s one of the weaker bosses in the DLC imo but that’s only because the other bosses are so great. He’s incredibly frustrating at first due to his hit boxes but he’s very satisfying to figure out. Not a particularly difficult fight once you get a feel for his moves and develop a decent strategy. He can feel very bs and unbalanced when you first start fighting him and haven’t figured him out yet.

I've gotta call you out on this, Act Man. The fact that unlocking your camera and locking it on at the right moments makes the fight easier does not make it a good feature. Everyone who has gone through a souls game is well aware that there is a strategy to work around From's clunky design, but it's still a manual workaround to bad design and deserves to be criticized as such. Yes, if you unlock your camera against Bayle, you will no longer be staring at its belly while you're trying to hit its leg, and the tip is very useful to a newcomer who isn't aware of the big boss cancer streak and how to mitigate it. Ironically, though, your example clip about unlocking your camera still shows you getting hit by a fire attack that you couldn't see because of the camera despite the workaround, and even in the best scenario, you're still forced to have your entire screen filled up with Bayle's ugly stump for half the fight. He is a spectacle; his missing foot is not, and I'd much rather actually see the thing I'm trying to kill than intimately learning just how thick his thighs are. They've tried to fix things a little by giving more damage to headshots, which would be great if they designed the boss to keep its head in striking range either throughout the fight or during their vulnerable windows, but they forgot to actually implement their apparent desire to keep you in front of big bosses and a bit distanced from them by making sure that their move-sets and movement naturally corals you into their nutsacks even with the extra damage on their domes, and I'm SO confident in this fact that I'm hinging this entire argument on the hope that every single person here has taken the same 3 credit class on Bayle's stupid leg stump instead of bringing up the myriad of Souls bosses that notoriously and obviously have these problems, many of them in this game specifically. These geniuses designed Elden Ring, so they don't get passes on such a glaring flaw just because I can manually apply a tedious strategy to half-fix a problem that they know about and only actually deal with for a select few bosses - just enough of them to let me know that they CAN fix it and just don't care enough to.

@@The0nlyy It's not a skill issue. I can click the right stick and move it around just fine without paddles. The fact that you recommended me buy a controller about as expensive as the game just so I can fix HIS bad camera design is funny though. Nowhere in my comment did I say big bosses were hard. They're notoriously easier than well-designed smaller bosses. I said they were stupid and poorly designed to create a fight where you can't see the spectacle they've made. Over my time beating every Souls game that isn't DS2, I've come to realize that Miyazaki's greatest achievement isn't his beautiful games; his most impressive achievement to date is accidentally creating a cultish following that is so choked up on his massive pickle that they will blame themselves for all of his mistakes like he's some sort of RPG Jesus. I literally wrote a dissertation on so many different problems with his design choice, and you're so biased toward this man that you actually MADE UP a sentence where I mentioned having trouble with big bosses. The intensity of all of your pandering is embarrassing. Please, for five seconds, actually think for yourself and contend with my argument that his camera design creates a suboptimal experience that hinders you from properly seeing the boss they want you to look at instead of saying the exact same thing I just criticized Act Man for telling me.

I've respec'd 6 times and each time a build brought something different but ultimately failed at the end. I've tried content creator builds (like Asmon's the Wall, Bloodfiend Arm etc) and each got me to 2nd phase and eventual death. I even did Mimic or Taylew with support incants...and that didn't go well. Hard to listen to "get gud" when he's literally killed me more than every other boss in the DLC and base game combined at this point (in this playthrough at least).

Skill gap: You are not expected to be locked on to all the bosses all the time, learning when to engage and when to disengage is as meaningful as learning when to attack and when to dodge. (E.g. Radhan becoming a meteorite, Astel and variants teleporting throughout the arena multiple times in the same fight, Margit jumping all over the place, changing lock on when in a multi-bossfight, cancelling lock on to run faster from certain attacks...) It is as much as a mechanic as dodge and attack, and it has been like that since first introduced by Fromsoft in its Armored Core games.

He also just looks so cool and his lore and music is fantastic just easy 10 out of 10 boss and has set a quality standard for any boss to come in the next fromsoft game

Messmer is THE boss that actually rewards you for playing a certain way against him. If you learn his attacks, especially in phase 1, you will be rewarded with clear openings if you roll into his attacks. My whole problem with Elden Ring is that every boss is designed around 3 mechanics: -Delayed attacks -AOE attacks -Teleportation (To some extent, differs per boss) And there isn’t really a boss that does actual unique things during fights except for maybe Rykard since you do get a special weapon for that fight and he doesn’t teleport to random locations in his arena. Messmer felt smooth and fair while still being difficult. Now…Consort Radahn-inator the Royal Spam F#cker and ruler of everything that hurts is a whole different story

Elden Ring players when someone uses a game mechanic instead of a +0 stick to beat a boss:
@parkergosman54765 ай бұрын
NGL Act Man, I love your videos, but the camera take in reference to Bayle's fight is in pretty bad taste. The "skill gap" of learning when to lock off is fundamentally unintuitive for players both new and old to the souls series, because you would be discarding a mechanic that has been otherwise integral to the combat design. It is not unreasonable for players to be frustrated when unprecedented constraints impede learning a boss's moveset patterns. Unlocking your camera renders the well animated telegraphs for attacks irrelevant - as you still can't see the boss in its entirety - forcing players to rely exclusively on memorized timing and audio cues. Because of this, the learning curve for already difficult bosses is artificially inflated because you can't observe every aspect of the boss, and you have to babysit the camera with the same digit you use for other essential inputs like rolling, healing, and jumping. This may appear like another aspect of difficulty in a boss that requires more flat "skill" from the player, but as someone who has also stopped locking on for these bosses, I find it a little patronizing that you would say it's actually part of the "skill-gap." Yes, it's harder to fight bosses where you have to handicap yourself through locking off, but that's not the kind of difficulty that I praise in Fromsoftware bosses. In a combat game it's inexcusable to have a player tool as central as the camera be unreliable to the point of being a hinderance. We can all agree that Messmer is a new gold-standard when it comes to boss design, so I find it odd that something like a self-imposed handicap to compensate for an otherwise completely reliable mechanic is treated like an acceptable or praiseworthy part of boss design. It shouldn't be divisive to expect the experts at Fromsoftware to start brainstorming solutions for the camera when locking onto large enemies.
@Peter_Anthony4 ай бұрын
I understand where you are coming from when calling lock-on an "integral part" of the game design, however as someone who started with Elden Ring and since has played all DS games and some AC, I can assure you that neither new nor old Fromsoft players should ever rely on Lock on 100% of the time when facing big enemies such as Dragons or Giants and neither any other big Fromsoft boss. Learning and knowing when to engage and disengage with a boss is as much as a mechanic in FromSoft's games as timing dodges and attacks. There's a reason why in Sekiro the camera is way better at following the bosses, it's not that Fromsoft can't make it happen, it's that they know it's an integral part of the game's design while in Sekiro they rely on you being able to see the attacks, in all the other soulslikes you are required to learn the movesets along with the timing when it comes to engaging and disengaging. And it's not only the big enemies that require you to engage with this mechanic. (E.g. Astel and its variants teleporting across the arena, the twin princes doing so too, Priscilla and sister Friede disappearing midfight and the Father making you switch lock on midfight to avoid his attacks, even Malenia more often than not is easier to lock off when avoiding Waterfowl dance, and that's without going into details about the tailcuts in earlier Dark Souls...) Managing the camera has always been a thing since Armored Core, it just became easier to do now that we have Lock on, but that doesn't mean that it's no longer a core mechanic.
@parkergosman54764 ай бұрын
@@Peter_Anthony Thanks for the reply! It's rare to have an unemotional discussion with someone on the internet. In reference to your first point; in my experience with earlier Fromsoftware games, if you aren't locked on 100% of the time, you're locked on 98% of the time. Saying that it's "as much" a mechanic in Fromsoftware games as dodging is attacking is a pretty outlandish claim. Sekiro's camera orientation allowing players to see the entirety of the enemy (and their attacks) is not some unique aspect of Sekiro's design - most of Elden Ring's bosses work that way as well because the camera doesn't have any issues. The argument that I made in my comment is that un-locking your camera is an exception to the usual standard, meaning that knowing when to lock on or lock off is NOT a fundamental part of Dark Souls style fights, it's a gimmick. Being able to see enemy attacks in their entirety should not be a high demand - even for large bosses - so thinking that's a privilege unique to Sekiro's design philosophy is kind of weird. The examples you list of bosses that require or at least encourage players to unlock their camera, (or else be selective about using it,) such as Twin Princes and Friede/Father Ariendel, don't actually suffer from the issue I complain about in regards to Elden Ring. Twin Princes' teleportation doesn't disengage your camera unless he teleports for a plunge attack, or to charge up his sword-beam AoE. In both instances, you only have to temporarily unlock your camera, and the moves offer over a second of down time for you to re-engage for the fight. Friede's jump in phase 1 offers that same grace; you're not forced to engage with the bosses attacks without being able to see them - you're only supposed to take the reprieve to find her again before she lands her special attack on you. Additionally, having to juggle two enemies (Father Ariandel) has nothing to do with my main problem. I'm not against having to switch the lock-on between targets. Astel Teleporting is much the same as Twin Princes. While difficult and disorienting, it doesn't suffer from the main issue I have with the camera. Malenia's waterfowl is a pretty unique exception, wouldn't you say? It's more of a testament to how gimmicky dodging that move can be rather than what her boss was intentionally designed to be. Both examples from Dark Souls 3 and Astel are perfectly acceptable examples to me. The main issue with Bayle (and Dancing Lion, and Promised Consort, and Fire Giant, and Ulcerated Tree Spirit...ETC.) is when the environment or the size of the enemy (or both) make it impossible for the camera to give you a view of the entire enemy / enemy attacks. I do not consider fighting a semi-transparent boss a very fun experience when my margin for error is already so narrow - particularly in the DLC. Let me be clear: I'm not against certain gimmicks in boss fights that force or encourage the player to unlock their camera as long as it's TEMPORARY and the boss is thoughtfully designed around that limitation on the player. But I find it immersion breaking to realize that the hypothetical camera of the video game is making it even harder to learn and engage with a boss. Also, I'm more than aware that these camera issues have been present since Dark Souls 1. I'll also say that this issue of not being able to see the boss can be as much a result from the boss being placed in an improperly sized environment. I simply thought that Elden Ring was going to learn from Sekiro rather than double down on an existing (and much lamented) problem. If you really think that your camera is as vital a tool in your arsenal against a boss as dodging or attacking, then I think we have pretty different values on what makes "good" or "enjoyable" difficulty in Fromsoftware games. The camera (and Lock-On mechanic) is a META tool - a part of the UI that should not sabotage/hinder the actual in-world mechanics.

I do however, not think the level before Radahn is easy by any means. I died several times in Enir Ilum to the humanoid lion dancers, as those fights were significant challenges. Also the staircase with holy damage coming up from the floor is very difficult.
