Hey man! BTA is really accurate at what it does, and Im happy you guys at the development team took the time to analyze what made beta so good rather than adding random stuff with old looking textures and use "nOsTAlgia" bs to popularize like ReIndev does, wich is my favourite thing about the mod in general. Though I have a question: Why did you make it all look so toned down, why did you add like 300 blocks to the point creative limitation is lost (Adding new blocks isnt bad, but they are too much) why did you add so many graphical effects that dont fit, nor only particles, but the boreal aurora doesent look Minecrafty or even pixelated at least at all, I just have so many questions, like why are there soooo much extra hud stuff like coordinates wich arent bad, but you could have put near the HUD bar ? I just need to know why you strayed away from beta sooo much at the same time, Im planning my own mod called Minecraft Gamma focused around accuracy and scrapped features that had potential, so I wanna see the full picture and know why you did certain stuff. No hate though the mod is still great :3 !!!

The problem with Mojang’s design philosophy since the Beta days is it is simply “hey, let’s add more stuff!”. Instead of taking the game as a whole and really analyzing how a new feature might throw the balance off, might make old features invalid, might be too grindy, etc, they just tack it on and call it good. They almost never even try to tweak old features to make them fit in the new “meta”. I think what the essence of Better than Adventure is, is that they really understand this and go about designing the game in a much better way

Yeah. IMO the issue was never that "the game doesn't need more stuff" but instead the issue was that none of the new additions ever felt meaningful outside of little ways and most if not all of them have any thought put into their relevancy or balance. The progression and core systems havent been touched on in years. The nether update was so popular because it was kind of free from these weird restrictions due to the Nether having its own internal progression and systems thus making all of its additions relevant and fresh and coherent because it was all focused on the Nether dimension.

This is going to sound really weird but beta Minececraft always felt like a very “Gnome-like” game, with everything feeling so much bigger than you and the isolation among the endless untamed wilderness, and how the overall smaller scope made every little thing feel way more important and satisfying. The massive mushroom fields you’d find in beta also helped that gnomish feeling. BTA expands on that feeling very nicely, in my opinion.

This is what I hate the most about modern Minecraft's identity, giving you powerful tools to be as creative as you want (like Mending, Elytra, autocrafters probably, etc) isn't a bad thing by itself, but they make those hyper powerful items so easy to obtain it ends up completely nullifying the survival part of the game. I really feel like at this point Mojang should make a new gamemode called Survival+ or Creative+ where it's just Creative but you can die and can't fly. And as for the atmosphere, I really dislike how alive modern Minecraft is, with full blown civilizations (pillagers and complex villager routines after 1.14) and common structures every 500 blocks, while old Minecraft had this feeling of being the only sentient being in a desolate version of Earth

I think the End was fine back when it was just... The End. A place you go to at the end of the game, for the sole purpose of slaying the boss and getting to the credits. With the addition of loot like Elytras and Shulker Boxes it's no longer The End. It's an awkward middle step you have to go through in order to get loot.

@@SarzaelX The End Islands are meant to be an equivalent to post-game. Like, hooray, you beat the game, now there's this side area that'll give you stuff to help you do whatever you want! The problem with that is that it's a survival sandbox game. There isn't really a set story or anything, and the goals are to be set by the player. Once you're late-game and have access to all this crazy stuff, it's like.. "Well.. what now?" It kinda just ruins the flow of the whole "Survival" part. It's more just about the grind at that point, and death will usually just be an inconvenience (although it still can be a major inconvenience at times) Some people will enjoy that, and it is a whole thing with some Sandbox games, but I don't think Minecraft itself is meant to be particularly oriented on like, one type of Sandbox game (although it will be a bit grind heavy regardless, because otherwise you're just playing Creative Mode.)

Wow I've literally been thinking about these same concepts about minecraft since I've started playing again, to me I really do believe modern minecraft is both overbloated with things to do and collect, and also very shallow on any given mechanic. For me playing 1.2 after not playing for a long time felt like this: Spawn in village, instantly get a free chestplate and helmet, find extra iron in a blacksmiths house to build iron pickaxe, mine straight down to diamond level, collect a diamonds to get full diamond gear + tools, and then immediately become very bored because netherite would take multiple hours and killing the ender dragon is a breeze at this point. Leather, gold armor and wooden, stone, and gold tools are all items that really only appear if you've been playing on a hunger game server or you're just messing around trying to break the monotony of using diamond/netherite tools, and that's a shame when the game could be so much more engaging and interesting in the early stages if they had more uses. Great video

A bunch of points I agree with With how I play, I always feel like not changing the overworld - feels like I'd be wasting a pretty and natural landscape, and would build around the land. On the underground, however, I'd go bonkers with mining and stuff. (The cave update brought a bit of the overworld problem to the underground, though) It sounds just natural to add the expansive structures to caves - I'd imagine you can just break it down however you want I should play this mod already :v

Really great video, love the animation and humor! I kinda feel like I fell out with modern MC cause a great deal of the points you brought up. One big thing I notice playing BTA is that it maintains the simplistic, barren feeling that old MC encapsulated and that feel really gets you encouraged to fill your world with something. It's a kind of human thing. For example, like how ancient humans put their handprints on walls. In old MC you feel obligated to put something there to say, "Hey, I was here!" even if nobody may ever see it again. Also, one thing I think that could add "functional substance" is if the devs added gameplay systems that nudge the player into building something functional. Kind of like mob farms, but intentional game design. And I know that is a very broad suggestion, but I can't come up with any specific ideas at the moment. Keep up the good work! This is the kind of content KZbin doesn't deserve anymore, but really needs!

Great video. A bite sized, easily watchable summary of the mod and how it changes the game’s features. A big problem with modern Minecraft is Mojang’s insistence on adding (weirdly little) new content every update without reevaluating the game’s legacy features and systems in the context of said new content. Love the animations too. I’m really tempted to give this mod a go now.

@@Strideo1 Mending is an enchantment that trades XP for tool durability. It essentially makes tools last forever. It was introduced as a "treasure" enchantment, meaning it could only be found as rare loot, but when villiager trading was updated it was added to villiager trades as an incentive. So now, people rush villiager trading halls so they can trade for diamond tools, and _also_ trade for Mending and start playing discount Creative Mode within a matter of hours. The worst part is that Mojang doesn't seem to understand the root of the problem (bad enchantment system, stupid anvils, and Netherite tools (which are hellish to grind for) should be unbreakable on their own) that make people so dependent on Mending in the first place, so they come up with stupid solutions- most recently restricting some villiager trades to specific biomes, just making the process more tedious.

BTA isn't perfect but IMO what really makes it work is that there is extensive effort into thinking about the vision and balance of the game. Modern minecraft feels like it lacks really any vision or attempt at balance and a LOT of the game feels jarring and incoherent. BTA is trying to make an actual game based on the foundations of MC that is meant to be a long term enjoyable experience while modern MC just...isn't trying to be that. I love so many ideas from modern MC and I prefer modern MC's "vibe" (like the aesthetic, nether update vibes, etc) but BTA is just a much cleaner and better game.

I think that minecraft should be about creativity and adventures, and the new versions give me a feeling that is like now a grinding simulator, instead of improving features, you don't feel so happy just building or even using creative mode anymore. I used to play the test of minecraft from play store, when the creative mode glitchy was discovered. Then me and my friend started to do building contests, even though we actually couldn't play together. so i started to build the most random creeper city, I even made a relo coaster that wasn't the most functional, since i wanted it to pass through the nether and back to the overworld with the portals. I remember when the aquatic update came, it was so annoying the phantoms just flying during the night. I guess the only thing i like that was added in most modern versions was the lightning rod, bc in that world during a thunderstorm my wool pixel statue was hit by lighting and started to got on fire. I used to get bored, bc not only the fact of having only one seed, but also i wasn't able to play online with my friend. I've found a fake like minecraft in 2021 where i could play online with my friends, it was similar to beta, and then i started to enjoy it. And now i decided to return and play minecraft on my laptop, but i am only able to play beta if i dont want to play at 1 or 0 fps. I think this mod will be pretty nice.

honestly i gotta agree on the overpowered late game stuff and structures. villages are too much of a handout in the early game and Ive always hated the really op stuff like netherite and elytras thats just a 10/10 on everything and makes your other gear completely useless in favor of you becoming a god. Also while its definetely not a negative for me it took some time to get used to the fact that the early game is alot harder in bta compared to modern minecraft, but it really helped sell the feeling of a larger than life world that early minecraft had, very cool.

I absolutely get your point about modern MC. To me, the moment they introduced villages, they pretty much committed to making the world inhabited, thus parting with the original lonely feel that was so special. Nowadays, I just go with modpacks, pushing the game very far in various directions, rather than bothering with vanilla. I might give BTA a shot tho!
@SarzaelX

I think an interesting alternate direction would have been if rather than spawning villages, you had to build them (similar to how Terraria does it), and then villagers can migrate into it. Perhaps go the full mile and you have to heal a bunch of zombies before your village can be inhabited. It makes your interaction with the world that much more special - you're the one rebuilding society, through your actions. It also makes it an opt in feature.

here is my opinion on structure pollution. I think the BTA devs should go for the post apocalyptic low fantasy vibe and the labyrinths do this well, but I also think it needs a couple of things. mainly things to flesh out the world and make it feel more alive. Small atmospheric structures, I am not talking about rotting wooden cabins or ruined settlements, large monolithic statues that jut out of the landscape or crumbling towers or fortresses looted of most valuables. It would offer maybe some shelter and atmosphere to the game. these can also be found in the nether haunted by fiery undead creatures. A handful of new mobs to add some life to the world. Fish in the ponds and streams, birds chirping in the skies, tiny gophers or rabbits that make burrow structures similar to modern bees in minecraft. the nightflies they added are a good example of this. However i also propose some more useful animals like what if we created or straight up added the sniffer but turned into a slow moving pack animal similar to the Lox from valheim and made the Sniffer more neutral/territorial. Maybe rework some of the default mobs like allowing arthropods to climb vertically and hang above ceilings, undead mobs arising from the ground at night, creepers hatching from these mossy pod growths that spread like sculk found in dungeons. Maybe as a mini-boss players can fight dungeon golems that guard some kind of special chest and can be killed for some rare component to craft some new set of armor and tools charged from the essence of living beings, basically a very rudimentary form of enchanting. Neutral NPC mobs with some kind of reputation system akin to Scavengers from Rain World. You can trade with them but if you steal, grief, or kill them they will get mad and actively hunt the player down, if you slay mobs or give them free valuable gifts they will begin to trust you and maybe show up in unexpected places to help you out if mobs are harassing you. They aren't like wolves, they are not loyal too you, they are a nomadic people who do things of their own accord but they will begin to respect you and assist you on rare occasions. These NPCs could even have faction conflicts between other tribes sometimes, I think also these NPCs should be pigmen not testificates or humans. There should be alot of atmospheric story telling and fantasy stuff is what I am saying. Who are the pig-men, who built all these structures, what lead to the creation of the creepers, why does the nether exist, who built the golems that roam the labyrinths deep beneath the earth, where is the source of the cave noises? In my weird BTA headcannon, the humans channeled magic from the nether to power their constructs and enchantments, they colonized and enslaved the native pig people turning a luscious alien mushroom paradise into a burning wasteland of brimstone. A power-hungry sorcerer king who was a pig-man sought revenge on the humans so he created the withering plague which reanimated corpses. However the plague afflicted both the humans and pigmen now this mad king lives deep in the nether in some ancient fortress casting his people to the new world whilst the undead plague ravaged both worlds. You are the last surviving human, pig-men migrate in exodus from the nether with their caravans of sniffers and magma crabs, you must venture into the depths of the nether to slay the old one or just chill out on the surface building cute cottages and trading with pigmen.

Above all else, what I've REALLY been looking for in a Minecraft mod is something that provides actual incentives to build things beyond a dirt hut. Some of the most fun I've had in the game was when I set up my base on a Pillager outpost, only to discover this meant I had endless bands of pillagers spawning around my home. It forced me to get really creative with traps, walls, bridges, and tunnels. For me, Minecraft works best when it's giving me incentives to build. I want more utility blocks to function like the enchanting table, where they're more effective if you take the time to set up a room specifically for them. Say... anvils being better next to lava/magma, or brewing stands benefiting from nearby cauldrons.

You know I was gonna say this was a dumb clickbaity title meant to capitalizes on the negativity and nostalgia going around in the Minecraft commubity right now. But honestly you got me agreeing at the end.

This mod looks fantastic. There's a lot of stuff I'm just not happy with in the modern version of the game and my favorite time with it was always during the Beta days. I ended being pretty disappointed with the 1.8 Adventure Update's terrain generation and with complete new versions it feel like there's way too structures littering the landscape. At first I liked the idea of villages but now that there is one over every hill I just miss that lonely mysterious feeling of being the only one around.

People saying vanilla minecraft gear hard to get and taking so much time? Jesus. I remember time when in 2014 people saying GregTech is hard, and played IC2 instead, now what, vanilla hard? What a joke...

I recommend a game named Vintage Story, it's hard enough and I feel it's better in some ways than Minecraft, more in line with what you said about gear and building. And it's better managed than Minecraft, as it seems minecraft doesn't have a clear vision, it feels like a game stuck in eternal early access, Vintage Story does not have this problem. Don't get me wrong, the games are similar, but Vintage story is way way different than Minecraft in various ways, for starters LOREEE, but you can skip it.

How does BTA stack up to mods like ReIndev? I understand that they are different in design philosophy but as someone whose getting into Golden Age Minecraft I'm interested in hearing your thoughts!!! Awesome video by the way, keep up the great work!!! ❤❤❤

One of my personal gripes with modern minecraft is that they never want to add anything truly gamechanging or massive anymore. Instead we keep getting useless stuff like the sniffer, the armadillo, and just blocks upon blocks upon blocks that don't do anything. The last update I could really consider "massive" was the nether update since it gave the nether more purpose than just being a quick pitstop to get blaze rods. The cave update was cool for like 10 minutes until you realized that all it really ended up doing was making caves moderately more interesting to explore. It also doesn't help that they haven't added anything that truly changes how you play the game in ages, the last update that changed the core gameplay of minecraft was the combat update and that was released almost 8 whole years ago.

I think MC rlly doesn’t know what it’s tryna b, which is y there r games & mods that do MC better. MC is no longer beta; it’s also no longer the adventure era. Modern MC is adding/changing huge things but it’s lost. My odd suggestion is that Mojang has 2 embrace being a hyperfilled game - which is probably actually the way 2 make the game feel like a sandbox again. Major updates 2 consider: “the balancing every existing feature update” “the updating every old entity texture update” “the I might as well include every mod in vanilla now update.”

Why would Mojang update every version? Alpha, Beta, 1.0-1.5 etc. these are all history for a reason. You can't change history

The argument shouldn't really be "older minecraft is better than modern" rather "is modded minecraft better than current vanilla?" BTA is a perfect example for this but it still doesn't have most things that make base minecraft better. Bta adds simple features and even fireflies aswell as a better dungeon for exploration and faster transportation..also you forgot to mention it DEFINITELY runs better for low end PCs so instead of installing fps mods this is simply a better option for potatos. (Or just play bedrock) Base modern has features that are EXTREMELY helpful than what bta has. Enhanchment that even give us a better advantage for mining so no long ahh strip mining in late game. Easier to craft materials aswell. All yaneed is 3 blocks of wool and 3 blocks of wood to craft a bed which is really good. Bta adds a different feature where instead of 3 blocks you need one and a new crafting material called cloth which can be dropped by fighting zombies. Bta encourages you to explore and fight zombies to get this. But the problem is having to fight multiple entities at once 😂 which is even more tedious on higher difficulty but its not really hard to grab. Imo crafting materials in base game is alot more simpler than what bta is going for enhancement are extremely helpful in base game aswell. In my conclusion Both is really good but modern Minecraft has a lot of things that are easy to understand. Sure it has problems. But i can't gatekeep it for much longer..minecraft is fun no matter which one u wanna go for..modern or bta its entirely up to you. I recommend trying this mod out for yourselves. Fyi strays and illagers were cool AF idc!

I don't really feel that bta, beta style continued really needs to add more 'stuff to do' Because the appeal of minecraft to me, is that you decide what to do with your world, rather than what the game gives you, it sandbox after all XD! If you having world for years, the stuff the game gives you won't matter to much in the long run, because it'll eventually run out, and you gotta be creative with how you expand your crafted world:D Yea, having an end in modern minecraft truely removes this appeal, as minecraft becomes a BEATABLE GAME, so when you beat the end, you just kinda be like........... I dunno what to do now, BYE! Rather than being an endless timeless world you craft, but that just me lol.

I agree with almost everything you said but I actually enjoy the grind you have to do to get better gear in vanilla And I really like above ground structures, exploring and constantly finding structures is really fun to me You get you're inventory so full the game turns into inventory management (wich I know people complain about but I like it)

I like grinding for better gear too but enchanting/mending makes it a luck/numbers game, while also unbalanced since you can get great gear early on with villages/npc trading. Plus later gear is very op. It's unbalanced as a whole, imho. Also, BTA makes you wanna keep a set of each armor, so it does encourage some grinding too. As for inventory management, agreed, but it has to come with some challenge, ex. non stackable food in vanilla beta makes you pick and choose inventory slots while fiddling with danger if you run out (plus no health regen since no hunger). As for structures/npcs, imho i disagree, perhaps bc i like the "taming the wilderness" vibe, tho wouldn't be opposed to very sparse ruins. Anyway, we must all be glad we have all these different versions and mods that cater to so many playstyles. I only do vanilla beta for now, i prefer the barer more survivalistic experience.

5:15 as much as I am not a fan of this mod or it's ideas (I'm more of a vanilla plus/ should be in the game mod kinda guy) I still think you should have got stars for that opinion. if you can even call it that. Limiting f3 sounds like an obvious W of a feature and I didnt even know it was a thing until now haha.

Off topic but I've got to admit I feel when MC added eleytra and netherite it killed a part of the game think back to your first playthroughs finding diamonds was amazing because it was the best of the best but still when caked in diamond gear you still would feel vulnerable so you didn't feel like a god but now you can become a UN killable higher being which makes the game boring by taking a way risk you make the game boring

I hate structures because they generate so awfully. I have never seen a cleanly generated village outside of superflat worlds. Same with this "best gear" stuff. I hate the constant feeling of "I need this with these enchants specifically or I cant start building" its so annoying. The elytra also sucks. It takes the fun out of exploring and completely demolishes the accomplishment of building highways. You don't need highways if you can just fucking fly everywhere. After the Enderdragon is beat I completely lose interest in the world and the game as a whole. No wonder people only ever have 2 week phases.
