I'm surprised that your poll showed such greater interest in clarity than FOV. I've seen other statistics showing that FOV was more favored. But then again, I think those were from having actually shown people examples of both and seeing which was preferred. The majority of VR headsets have rotten FOVs. And the trend in newer VR headsets has been toward even narrower (like this one). I think this is taking advantage of people not missing what they've never experienced. Once you've tried a wide FOV VR headset, it's hard to go back. But unfortunately the only option there is Pimax, which the vast majority of people will never have tried. I'm maining a Pimax 8KX, and because of that I'm stuck. I'm spoiled on FOV that covers nearly my entire vision. The level of immersion that produces is hard to explain to people who have never experienced it. And also the significant competitive advantage in gaming. But with the VR industry moving toward increasingly narrow FOV headsets like this, there's just nothing I have any interest in upgrading to. 90x93 degrees sucks pretty hard. That's even narrower than the Quest 2. Other aspects of this headset sound great, but that tiny FOV. Eh.

I think Big Screen doesn't care at all about the ability to play games on it (why it doesn't come with controllers/base stations). I think Big Screen has MUCH bigger plans for this headset. I believe they built this headset to close down Regal and AMC theaters and become the new place Hollywood releases movies. I know many of you doubt this, but is it really that hard to believe? Look at what this company is and what they've chosen to concentrate on designing the headset for: color accuracy, comfort, super light, easy to strap to your head, and small enough to easily eat popcorn and snacks while wearing it. This is a headset even grandma can put on without help. And for those of you who've never used the Big Screen app on Oculus Rift, you can choose which theater you want to be in. You can be in a huge IMAX size theater, an old 80's retro theater, drive-in theater, in your million dollar apartment, etc. The headset only has two things they need to work out before they can accomplish this: the price (which will come down later) and the glare. All headsets have this issue where if there's a bright spot in the middle and darkness around it, you will get glare on the lenses (basically, any movie theater). So they have to keep the movie theater relatively lite-up during the movie to minimize it. It's still a massive distraction and they'll have to get this ironed out before overthrowing cinemas.

I cannot get over the fact that the "custom fit" is a way to ensure everyone needs their own. If it wasn't for the universal fit of the occulus my dad wouldn't be playing table tennis in VR for hours a day as he entered retirement. Seems like the by product of profit and not user experience. Always love to see the advancement of tech, but the caveats are what hold me back: No pass-through (kind of important in full immersion HMDs), no built in audio (supposedly an audio strap is coming), and no eye tracking, which might be one of those features that really leaves this HMD behind.

Although it is great that a company is specialised in making bespoke, tailor made VR headsets, and they have clearly put a lot of effort and thought into it, they should be wary of the fact that VR is an a novel experience that needs to be shared, in order for it to catch on. The headset still needs to remain adaptable to any face, it's not exactly common for any of your family and friends to have exactly the same shape of head

I really think that PCVR headsets can only succeed in attracting a new audience if either they offer an included tracking solution themselves, or if a new tracking solution that is widely available releases. Yeah, maybe some people see this as an upgrade to their full Vive kit but most PCVR users use the Quest nowadays and I don't see those paying the at least 500 dollar bonus price for just the tracking and that is if they have a good PC. I am very skeptical the beyond can be successful even if it didn't have the downside of no resell value, iPhone requirement and low FOV.

The FOV is about the same as the Quest 2, so at least those users can tell if it's a deal breaker for them before they buy it. There's just enough hurdles to make this unapproachable, even though I like the idea.

The Beyond is incredible. However, I would hold on for the next gen personally, since there needs to be a leap in technology to make this truly effective. It needs a mini wireless connections hub to make it really useful. By that I mean the next gen Wifi (Wifi 7) and Bluetooth (6? LE) with almost no lag, so it can stream from the phone (assuming phone has powerful enough hardware). It needs at least one tracker for head movements and one camera for some kind of passthrough mode. Other trackers can go on a person's body or on the controllers, and more cameras can also be clipped on to a person's shirt if needed. The core premise of Beyond is definitely incredible. The custom face pad is amazing. And I can always keep a cheap 299 USD Meta Quest 2 if I need to show someone else anything in VR. [My IPD is 64, in case you ever decide to sell your Beyond btw 🤓]

To maximise appeal & sales they need to: 1. Allow people to order multiple different face fitting foam moulds per headset, which can be swapped back and forth, to allow a couple with different shaped faces to share a headset, wearing contact lenses if they have different eyes, rather than have personal prescriptions in the headset, unless they don't WANT to share. 2. If they can't get it in the first release, they should aim for a refresh upgraded version which maintains all the other hardware specifications, but ups the refreshrate to 120Hz/FPS (for solid looking images that reduces nausea) and 120 degrees field of view. Obviously it will be down to the power of the individual PC used with it to make full use of these features, but high-end hardware (RTX4090 paired with AMD 7950X3D, etc) paired with Unreal Engine 5 are just about ready for TRULY realistic immersion, and just needs pairing with a VR headset that can display it. 3. They should reach out to VR haptic glove manufacturers, allowing controls by, for example, touching different fingertips to your thumb tip without needing physical buttons or separate controllers. The next step up is artificial physical resistance built onto the gloves so you can FEEL items you pick up. This technology already exists, it just needs unifying and standardising.

I'm so, so excited to get mine. :) As for sharing with others, I still have an original Vive that I will keep around for guests. But obviously the inability to share (and easily sell) is the Beyond's major downside.

Wow the microphone quality is extremely good. Headset manufacturers need to take notice.

Love seeing another company working on PC dedicated HMDs. I don't like the remote tracking stations, no room for that. So still using my Rift S and just keep hoping someone will make something close to that type of hardware.

How's the fov compared to a vive cosmos? I have the elite but fov and comfort are lacking.
@Shinyshoesz Жыл бұрын
Once iterated upon, it's a goal headset. After having the Quest 2, the only disappointment I've had is the weight and comfort factor. If they can increase the FOV and we can somehow get some pancake lenses with a slightly higher resolution, I'm sold on it even if I have to get base stations. I think until we can get major advancements, wired/tethered high-end VR is just flat out a better experience than standalone games can muster right now. Thanks for the review!

I want one but I worry that my GPU isn't up to scratch. I have a 6750XT which is over minimum but I don't have any existing VR to have a good understanding of what to expect.
@nathan4853 Жыл бұрын
Very cool headset, but there's no way I would spend that much on a headset that the rest of my family can't also use. If they added adjustable IPD, and the ability to order additional face pads, though, I'd be all over this.

No vr exp from me but that fov is the main thing that deteres me from this yet my goal is immersion and hear this one is great for that. What a hard decision to make. =(

That's exactly what I dream about, yes. I think this is awesome for any VR enthusiasts with a couple extra bucks. We're a household with 3 users on the same headset so sadly no good for us. Maybe one day when we win the lottery.

Neat idea but if they require you to have X or Y product to make something for that unit then... yeah pass. It's like saying "Yeah you can ice cream, but you'll need a car, a license, and sign a waver incase you get brain freeze". I think it's a good idea to have more headsets do custom shapes, however it needs to have alternative options (that are included in the cost) or a cheaper option without it (make your own with open source files).
@choppergirl11 ай бұрын
So I don't understand, if it's custom made to fit your IPD and face shape, how are other people going to be able to use it, and how are you going to be able to resell it later?
@goodtyme10 ай бұрын
its not really meant to be shared but you could share it with someone if thier ipd is close to yours and they order their own custom face gasket

Better FOV and either two USB ports or a split cable with the ability to connect to an external battery and smartphone running Virtual Desktop client would be nice. You could have your phone and battery in your pockets or strapped to your chest or something and play wirelessly through your phone to your PC. If someone makes this, I'm buying it day one.

I have a reverb G2 with facemask mod. I can't really justify upgrading considering the lower field of view. I'm so bummed though... I have knuckles and a 4090 so it's ideal.... 1st world problems. I can't get knuckles to keep working with my reverb g2 setup reliably, so I need a good option soon...

Sadly full dive sounds to be impossible due to some recent studies. Some studies have recently shown that motor control isn't actually stored in the brain but the nervous system close to the part of functionality. That means full dive VR wouldn't just need a brain stem connection, it'd need links all over the body. We'd basically have to be full cyborgs.

I have it pre ordered but am on the fence about if I'll get this or the pimax crystal. My current headset is a vive pro 2. I seriously had to work to get this thing "somewhat" comfortable as it's very front heavy in a way that wasn't true for the original vive so comfort is a high priority in my next piece. The advantage here is that it's comfortable and an easy fit into my current setup. It's also six hundred dollars less than the crystal but misses a lot of extra features that thing has. Biggest two things that I know of is the the better lenses that don't glare and the fov. Add in eye tracking and the potential for foviated rendering along with inbuilt off ear audio for pre orders and you have something good. Then again, I'll have to buy a lighthouse tracker to add to the price as I do prefer outside in tracking. I do have a sneaking suspicion that the beyond will come out on top in just use though as it looks that much easier to just pop on so I am torn but that's good for the industry so I guess win win? I'd love to see more direct comparisons though.

The vive pro 2 is SO UNCOMFORTABLE. I feel like you would like the beyond wayyyyyyy more and probably question how you even put up with the vive for so long haha.

Finally we will have a HMD that make us feels NOT wearing a scuba diving helmet (blurry,bulky, heavy) ... eventhough it's still narrow FOV; at least it's now very lighter. The bulky and heavy HMD were the reason why until today I've prefer only making "underwater VR games"... that the only genre that make me feel the reality of VR thing... LOL!! =)) Still curious with Apple HMD , will they ship it with retina display panel? ;)
