The biggest flaw of TBBT is that the writers assumed that all very smart people love nerdy things, when in reality being a nerd and being academically clever are actually quite different.

ok one thing, they never assumed all smart people love geeky things, they are saying that these "extraordinary people" have similar tastes. an example. in your friend group I'd bet everybody in there like similar things (if you have any). and btw Amy doesnt like any of that geeky stuff and I'd consider her "smart". and technically a nerd could mean anybody that is really good at something or multiple things, example, Im a "Math nerd" but I don't like si-fi that much. anyway I was just pointing out le obvious

Eshwar Raj I get why people would be critical that the show relies more on “oh that’s a science thing so it’s funny” rather than the audience actually understanding the science to get the joke but what people tend to forget is that this shows target audience was mainly regular people that just wanted to unwind, shut off their brain for a while and just enjoy the show for what it was. I think being so critical and analyzing a show like this defeated the whole purpose.

I was always amazed how much free time time these "scientists" had, seeing they were apparently working on cutting edge theories and engineering while also playing online videogames and reading comics most of the time. I would agree except for Penny. A Nebraska girl with a California accent doesn’t really work, such as That ‘70s Show with Donna and Jackie being from Wisconsin yet sounding Californian (I know the actresses are from CA, but still…). That's not really the point though. Look at something like family guy you can attack it for relying on reference humor, but at least those are used in the sense that the audience is supposed to be in on said reference. BBT the audience is meant to feel superior for not getting the reference. This is a show for people that, don't understand pop culture and feel alienated by people that do.

They were riding on the characters being so one-dimensional in their stereotype, that it actually goes against their established character by virtue being in a relationship. I liked the first 2 seasons. After watching the whole series multiple times, I now know why. In the beginning, all of them had coloured personas. They had their own eccentricities but also had a human side that you can connect to. Sheldon was quirky but he was not rude, he would listen to leanard when he was made aware of the situation. In the later season, sheldon just straight up became an egoistical jerk. For leanard, he was smart but also wanted to embrace the other lifestyle. He would stand up to people. By the end, he was just a needy people pleaser. For raj, he had problems talking to girls, but had a very friendly and amicable persona. He would have no problems sleeping with girls, or making fun of haward. by the end, we was just reduced to a whinny homosexual momma’s boy. I can keep going on. They had a promising start but instead to building on the human characters, they just took all of their eccentricities and made those their whole character.

Your summary is the best I’ve seen here so far. Totally agree. Penny was kind but stupid at the beginning. 3 seasons in, she was just awful. Leonard would never fall for her if she was like that from the get go. And she would never show interest in them either. She would slam the door in their face the first time they came over. I’ve never watched the show until the end, but I’m doing it now. I’m on season 6 now. Think I’ve watched the up to the 10 first seasons at some point. Gonna see it, just to have done it. But I won’t do it again. Chuck Lorre is good. But not great. Same thing at Two and a half men. It was a great show, that was ruined. By him. If you want a good show, watch HIMYM.

Whats worse is that its not just regular "normies". I am yet to meet your stereotypical "jock" or someone "uneducated" that likes the show and just want to laugh at nerds, the same way we want to laugh at misfortune of people from The Office or IASIP. Its always reasonably smart people, educated and involved in nerd culture enough to understand the references. They are just not deep enough in the nerd culture to understand how shitty and shallow those jokes are. I am not trying to gatekeep or anything, its just that I noticed that people are usually not aware of the basic principle of this show(laughing at nerds being socially awkward and inept), and just think this is how nerd humor works. They are equivalent of your typical 20 something person that does yoga, once read self help book and took LSD two times and now she thinks its some kind of spiritual guru that says "Namaste" as a farewell, just being oblivious to the fact that its ignorant, you look like an idiot to everyone involved enough, and, in a sense, offensive.

Lonely awkward nerds are lonely and awkward (insert laugh track here). Now, comare this to The IT Crowd - clearly created BY and FOR nerds. And it's freakin' hilarious! Why? You're completely right, those Sheldon cuts they use are not supposed to be funny just because they use a reference for the sake of using a reference, they are supposed to be funny because of Sheldon's total absence of social skills. So, he doesn't understand when or how it is appropiate to give "stick to the book" definitions or explain his behavior with a vocabulary that (he's supposed to know, because he's super smart) most of people are not going to understand. Take that away, and there's nothing left, that's all the show is.

There is a lot wrong with this show, and you nailed some of it, like the scornful humor (although beat-on-your-friends is a common trope outside TBBT too) and the kitchen-sink approach to geekdom. But the references aren't always as brainless as you claim and the show does often have a lot of heart. It also has a lot of character growth, sometimes cringily uneven but sometimes profound. And even when we're laughing at exaggerated nerd cultures, it's still normalized so that we accept it and the characters that embody it.
@edgardeitz5746

Personally, I see the whole thing as being a balance between what @michaelf9664 says here, and what is said in the video. To improve the show (in an alternate universe), one might want to find anything that worked (the actual humanity to the series) and tweak the existing episodes (past a certain point) to better implement the aformentioned humanity.

As someone who didn’t get a single reference, and also someone who knows many Chinese people that enjoy this show, I think the reason for it’s popularity has something to do with laughing at stupid Americans. As fans of the show often are the same people who genuinely find Americans and Americans culture inferior. So they don’t need to get the reference, they just need to know it’s “unpopular”.(yes I know Star Wars is popular but not in China.)

In terms of getting the references, there was one point in the show I remember watching when some old dude shows up to Sheldon as a Force ghost, and in every second shot he has a different lightsaber hilt. There can never be a show about "us". Everyone is unique. Because everyone is unique, it is impossible to put a group of people in a box with an accurate label on it. There are thousands of people who have similar qualities to the 4 guys in TBBT, but will never be able to fully identify with any of them because differences are a thing. There will never be a character/show/etc... that actually represents an individual. If you are looking to any form of story telling to see yourself reflected you will always be disappointed.

I have only watched what my relatives would put on to be polite but i feel the show had 2 main appeals that kept the audience happy. 1 Nerd love: the show always has a love sub plot in the background that is usually done fairly well, kind of hard to mess one up in a sitcom but worth mentioning, many people are attracted to romantic comedies and relationship growth so they can ignore some of the weaker elements in writing. 2 anti intellectualism: the big punchline for all the episodes is "look at these brilliant men messing up these easy tasks". Most of the "nerds" basically have really bad lives and backstories and have crippling social anxiety with huge egos that ruin any connection with the outside world. its continuing the idea that being smart comes with drawbacks and that you the audience are in some ways superior for living a normal life and gaining skills they haven't.

+Craig X: "Big bang characters are less stereotypical than the IT crowd. " Maybe, but the IT crowd is not trying to be two things at once. By not taking itself seriously and throwing realism out the window (think of Richmond) it allows the viewers to accept the ridiculousness and caricaturishness of the characters' behaviours. TBBT, on the other hand, is trying to be heart-warming and give the characters a story-arc even though its main humour source are stereotypes and shallow jokes. You can call that a tonal inconsistency, existential confusion, or just lack of spark/talent in the writing department. As for the video, I agree that it pushes it a bit when trying to link the critique to philosophy (bit pretentious), but the creator is right in his judgement that this is a *bad* comedy.

The thing is...people watch it thinking it is a show for nerds. But it isn't for nerds or nerd culture...it is ABOUT nerds and nerd culture...but it shows a wrong representation of it. Basically making fun of it indirectly. It could be a smarter show, but instead it showcases nerds so "non-nerds" can laugh at them from the seat of their couch.

I think characters shitting on each other is more like a tradition of the genre. To counteract that, TBBT had a lot of sweet moments. The guys singing to Bernadette in the hospital is one of the most heartwarming moments in all of sitcom history. Also, if you understand a subject of a joke, it is a lot of the times pretty amusing. And if not, it is refreshing to observe interactions of educated people. For me it was more annoying in the Friends to see any remotely interesting topic brought up by Chandler or Ross being ridiculed for its outlandishness. As to the "awkward nerd" stereotype, I think its just that the show started when it was still in fashion and later they got self conscious about it, for example, making Penny date a scientist that was both hot and a genius or making Leonard's gf Priya both socially adjusted and being able to outsmart Sheldon in an argument.

Did you know that unintelligent people are capable of getting degrees? She may have a degree in neuroscience, but she's also publicly stated wrong information about science with the kind of confidence that only comes from D-K victims. I used to work with a guy who had a PhD in history and was the leading expert in ancient Egypt at his college (it was a small but good college, so this is the equivalent of maybe being in the department at all of a larger university imo). One of my favorite things he used to say is that BS stood for bullshit, and PhD stood for Piled high and Deep. Anyway, my point is, post-secondary education is important, and more people should get one. Honestly, even if people don't get a career relevant to their degree afterward, they do have a better understanding of the world than the average person who hasn't gotten a degree... but no matter how far they go in that program, it doesn't mean they're smart. Trump has a degree from an ivy league school. So does Hillary. Whether you think he's the idiot, or whether you think she is, the fact remains: even high degrees from the best schools available can write an idiot's name on a piece of paper with their official seal on it.

The references don’t always age well, but the characters really do develop, and call out the years of emotional abuse - which most shows don’t do. My answer to the title question is simple: It's a show based around a single joke: over the top nerd stereotypes. If we're really harsh here, this show should count as discrimination of a subculture, with Penny as the only "normal" character, scoffing at the over the top antics of these weirdos. It's like if there was a sitcom centered around a group of east asian friends, and the entire show is just about racist stereotype jokes like them talking in an over the top accent, having buck teeth, eating rice and taking photos, and the role of Penny is played by the sole western person on the show who scoffs at their asian antics.

@celestinenox 6 жыл бұрын
Lordy. Thing is, you're not supposed to find Sheldon relatable. The whole point of Sheldon is that he's not supposed to be relatable to the audience this show is really aiming at. That you find him relatable and something to laugh at in this show isn't an indication of how "real" your nerdness is or is not--I don't go around telling people what they are or aren't, considering there are many people who would tell me I'm not a real geek because I have boobs--but maybe an indication of how much respect you actually have for yourself and other nerds. Or maybe not. Who knows? All I know is that the writers of producers of this show don't respect us.
@benwasserman8223
@benwasserman8223 6 жыл бұрын
celestinenox As someone who dealt with a similar inability to understand sarcasm and communicate through pop culture, I’d say Sheldon is very relatable in that department. He’s a complete “I know i have problems but don’t care what anyone else thinks” type who just happens to have a justified yet overflated ego. Oh and if this show disrespects nerds, why was Stephen Hawking such a big fan of it?
@joelijasonditoka771
@joelijasonditoka771 6 жыл бұрын
They may be caricatures of what “normies” think nerds are like - but the exaggeration itself is humorous - and the use of overtly exaggerated caricatures is not unusual in comedy - Brooklyn 99 is not how a real precinct operates - or even some of the episodes from friends or seinfield etc etc... I don’t know if the producers are showing any intentional disrespect - I self-identify as a nerd... typical general knowledge and science geek; took pure science in high school then ended up deciding to read law in University... and the references and “smart-jokes” actual appeal to me... the punchlines require some thought and remind of British comedy more than your typical American offering because of it... although I suppose the cued audience laughter signpost the jokes... I still find them funny; more fool me I suppose...
@celestinenox
@celestinenox 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, he's going to be relatable to some, but he's not *supposed* to be. That he's relatable to some people is a side effect of there being an infinite variety of traits and personalities in people. But he's the butt of the joke, which means so is anyone who can relate to him, and that's not cool. You'd have to ask Stephen Hawking. I'm sure his reasons are out there for anyone to find.

@@maurice482390 thought that was a good excuse a long time ago, yet what happens when their is like 60 million people just like you doing the same thing. Thing is you light up and watch a turd in a bag on t.v. on that note, so do 59 million other people, then the higher ups think this is what the people want.

@@ojs5988 that's comedy it's objective if don't like it you don't have to watch it. Simple as that. It's like going to a comedy show and being a heckler and easily offended over a few jokes. Same thing with other forms of media.

One it was on way to long, 4 years is enough for any comedy show, it’s self parody now. And two when it became about changing the nerds into “normal” people because girlfriends make everything better it lost its focus and just became Friends with science jokes.

4 years is nothing, even the comedy shows referenced in the video lasted longer than that.

Everyone is entitled to their wrong opinions. Just because other shows jumped the shark after going more than four years doesn't make it the right move.

You've missed this one. The big bang theory is funny and interesting because it is intensely relatable for people who are themselves massive nerds. Very often I have had the experience of realizing I am being unnecessarily nerdy, complicated or have lost touch with a none technical point of view. The humour comes in the sudden realization that you have been so intensely lost in high levels of abstraction that you've lost touch with the base level reality and are thus revealed to be quite ridiculous. It requires humbleness and empathy to honestly share these moments with others without experiencing shame or negativity but if you can there is a good deal of connection to be found with the none-nerds in your life.

One joke in this video supports that thesis. All of the others, as far as I can tell, go against it. The joke at the DMV works exactly as you describe. It goes above and beyond in a way that is far too in depth for the needs of the situation, but also points out the unique quality of people who think that way. That is a genuinely good joke that both pokes fun at nerds for going to far and also acknowledges that they are correct. Jokes about what bones are called do not do this. They aren’t jokes, they are simply ways to create distance between the characters and reality. Even for those of us who go far above and beyond in lexicon can recognize that the humor is not there for us, it is there for people who laugh because they don’t “get” something.
