From what I've heard; the concept they went with for the 1st Jak & Daxter game didn't do so well. The American audience didn't find Jak or his universe very appealing and the same can be said for the Japanese audience, it was sort of a mishmash of both kinds of style which might explain why they went with the tonal shift for the sequel. Jak literally and figuratively felt like he had no voice.

I'm a massive Uncharted fan, and the evolution of that series totally speaks to your point. Uncharted Drake's Fotune compared to Uncharted 4 A Thiefs End is a notable difference in tone for sure. My only slight issue with the series (namely 3 and 4), is how the world opened up to mythical and mystical things happening and then 3 was an illusion for the enemies but the world was still hidden (so its half fake and half real) and 4 just being more realistic I liked the mixture of realism and fantasy in these games so it bums me out less fantasy was put in them as time went on

It immidietly reminds me of this map that I git with ps2 copy, what secrets this beatifull world was hiding? I do not know maybe it would be different if Jak was talkative from the begginning or if they got with first, old concept and He woukd start talking in the next games, who knows. The only things that makes me sad about Jak series, is how people's attitude and environment changed. To Jak and Daxter TPL I can sit and play whenever I want, I can relax, meanwhile to other 2 I....I simply can not, it's quite opposite. Yikes, I'd never seen that concept art of Jak 4 before. I'm glad they decided they decided against it. I think I'll have nightmares about realistic Daxter now. Whilst I know a lot of people personally who really didn't care for the stylistic change in Jak II, I think ND correctly read the market and realised that audiences were growing tired of collectathons by 2002 and were hungry for completely open worlds. I personally feel that maybe it went a bit too edgy at times, but the high quality of Jak II and 3 meant that it didn't matter that much. The game's do suffer a little bit in retrospect, as the design of 3D open worlds was still a relatively new concept for a lot of developers. Haven city, particularly in Jak II, does feel a little lacking in things to do as you go from one mission to the next. This was improved in the 3rd game however, as they varied the locations you explore: Spargus city, Haven city, and the Wastelands. It often surprises me just how big Jak 3 is. Overall, I love all three games - even Jak X/combat racing despite how frustrating that game can be at times. I think ND did the right thing at the time, but nowadays I wish they'd unwind a little bit and return to they're sillier roots what with all the leaks I'm sure everyone has heard about by now, but I won't get into that here. Great video Vivi. :)

Bro I was never weirded out by the changes of the series it all seemed so natural to me, the tone as the series went along felt like it be reflecting Jak's age as he got older growing up from teenage boy to young man, it definitely GTA III and Ratchet & Clank what influenced them, yo the series allowed for more deeper storytelling and mature themes, focus on gunplay and the third-person shooter genre, not everyone take these risks like ND did, yo u feel like the next games really expand upon what the first game had done I don't think I'd feel the same way at all if ND stuck to J&D 1's style for the series, Jak set up and layed the foundation for ND's future series like Uncharted, I love all three of those games, Jak II is my favourite outta the trilogy bro

I dont really blame them for going with the realistic cinematic route, since that what made them into a big AAA studio, the more expensive the game looks the more it sold, then more money given for the next project by the publisher, same can be said about Sucker Paunch because hardly anyone know about the studio until they made the Infamous series, and now they are working on Ghost of Tsushima which is a bigger project thanks to the success of the last Infamous game(sadly for me).

Back in 2008 there were leaked early cutscenes of the game here on youtube, the graphics were closer to the Ps2 naughty dog style, and they even had the original Jak voice actor, Mike erwin, reprising his role, but apparently, high impact games replaced him with the other guy in the final version. The other reason Naughty Dog would've struggled to make Jak for the PS1 is because they already had to hack the PS1 just to get Crash Bandicoot to work on that console, and a surprising amount of console power went solely into rendering Crash Bandicoot, as well as the levels which even with Naughty Dog's famous procedural generation techniques still had to be individually loaded (hence every crash game having a level selection area). The Jak games on the other hand had to have 0 loading screens (not including the initial loading screen), so ultimately a Jak game on the PS1 would've probably frozen on launch, or lagged like crazy.

The Crash Bandicoot games were pretty much inspired by various saturday morning cartoons, the Jak games were inspired a bit by comics but also by steampunk and cyberpunk style Sci Fi (there's a lot of steampunk in TPL and a lot of cyberpunk in all the other Jak games), the Uncharted games were inspired by hollywood treasure hunter films (Indiana Jones always springs to mind), and The Last of Us borrowed from survival horror films and TV shows.

But GTA vs. Jak 2 or Sunset Overdrive for tone, theme, setting and enjoyment has been tough for me (GTA being something I'm least familiar with only owning Liberty City Stories on PSP for cheap out of curiosity just recenty) as someone into bright games mostly but experiencing a mix of genres and tones out of curiosity and boredom I think they all are fine but nothing I'd come back to even compared to more bizarre or better fictional worlds. The Eco powers and world were great but the mission design just isn't something I find enjoyable to return to and I have only played them around 2012 besides briefly owning them much earlier.

@@VtnVivi The Jak series has been good for tone, eco powers/guns and world building but I find the mission design of open worlds from not only this era or modern games just not always being the most memorable or engaging. Just how they jump between side and main story I get confused with at times. But Naughty Dog have done a good job with them from what I do remember, they are impressive and deserve the praise. I do go for some open-ish worlds but usually linear games. That and while I used to own Jak 1&3 briefly I never properly had them until 2012 and played through 2/&3 to story endings not 100%. So some context and a better rewording. Also not having played Crash till Nsane Trilogy, only owning Crash Team Racing for some reason, Uncharted had for a while and Last of Us just not clicking with me so I don't have nostalgia or the same appreciation for them due to the time I played them. Still great video as always Vivi.

They need to make a sequel to precursor legacy. Ill make a diagram. Original triology TPL, Jak 2, Jak 3. New trilogy , TPL, ????, ????. Have the new trilogy be an alternate reality where they never touch the rift gate, but still explore other lands. Play as young Jak.

It’s kinda like with the Sonic franchise. The Sonic games are bright and colorful, and Shadow The Hedgehog is the dark and edgy counterpart. Just like with Jak 2 and 3 to Jak 1.
@AimlessSavant4 жыл бұрын
I reaaally don't get the edgy narrative for 3. 2 definitely pushed for Jak to be eternally pissed off at praxis for his TWO YEAR LONG TORTURE. Jak 3 struck a good balance. Jak was a much more well rounded character, comes off a bit headstrong.

You know, if Naughty Dog still keeps the rights to Jak and Daxter and stay on track with Uncharted and The Last of Us, I wish that Naughty Dog would make Jak and Daxter: TPL Rated T as a bit mature and dark ,and they still have Jak and Daxter continue their adventures. Which is that they only focus on the culture in Sandover Village. That's the same for Sucker Punch keeping the rights to Sly Cooper, Sucker Punch would still use the Animation Render of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time to make Sly 4 without putting any cliffhangers and they would still make more Sly Cooper Games in future consoles like concluding the original series and rebooting the games with a fresh new take.
@VtnVivi4 жыл бұрын
Hmm.... I don't think TPL needs a T rating. As for re-imagining it and making it more ''edgy'' or darker, I wouldn't be against it.

Them not doing a Jak 4 cause it didn't feel right to them, fine. But why not a proper remaster, this series deserves so much more respect than it gets with these lazy ports. Especially on PS4 i expected it to get the HD treatment that Crash Bandicoot got. But no, instead we literally get to play the PS2 version running on an emulator, just on better hardware.

I would love to reboot/re imagine the j&d games, maybe like a open world rpg style taking eco to upgrade your stats like in TLF with you gaining new(or old) abilities as you progress and level up(blue eco used to power machines and increase speed, red to coat you in strength and fire, green to give you a boost in health or cure illness, yellow to give you or your weapons a ranged attack[dbz ki blast orsmall aoe blast on your spin kick], light to give...light and guide you through your journey[keeps you sane as dark is constantly trying to control you and make you evil], and dark to give you more power at the cost of health/sanity[more evil you become the more out of control and less willing to help others, eventually joining the big bad and ending the game if you are not treated with light eco]

In all honesty, I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I felt as if the Jak sequels were to Jak and Daxter as the Matrix sequels were to the original Matrix. By fundamentally changing the gameplay on a game engine not built with shooters in mind, they've made it exponentially harder and less enjoyable. If they decided to make a new GTA clone and left Jak and Daxter behind, I would've been all for that.

Given how they have gone with waaay more weird with their politics and have to have “No Fun” games with ultra grittiness and realism I don’t think I would want another Jak and Daxter game from Naughty Dog as I don’t think they would do the next game justice as they would probably kill off Jak in a brutal fashion like they did with Joel and replace him with either Ashlin or Keira because “Diversity”. So as much as I would like to have a Jak and Daxter Game I know Naughty Dog now would most likely just piss people off.

Not the tone change itself, but the multiple changes made to the series after The Precursor Legacy was indeed for the best. A lot of purist like to fantasize that Jak should have remained a colorful collect-a-thon, without guns and all that, but the series would have definitely sunken into obscurity, with likely not even a third installment. Not even a "darker" The Precursor Legacy sequel would have kept the series afloat, as tone alone isn't the only factor that'd contribute to the series success or failure. Anyway, then all the comments about bringing the series back would have started far earlier. It'd also have been way harder to bring back that style of platformers in this day and age, which again supports the argument for why the changes made to the series was for the best. The modern Jak has enough multi-genre variety to appeal to business healthy demographics if it was brought back. Developers can tell an engrossing narrative while also having strong gunplay, with strafing and everything, as that's the foundation the sequels set. Imagine if we were to instead live in the world the purist clearly want, wherein *TPL2* happened and Sony Interactive Entertainment tried to reboot Jak TODAY the way it happened . . .13 years ago . . . (a completely different time, mind you) for the series to hold its ground. Naturally, people would then expect for a collect-a-thon platformer *series* to return as a collect-a-thon platformer, since unlike the Jak we actually do have in reality, it never was a collect-a-thon platformer series; that only lasted for one sole game.
@VtnVivi4 жыл бұрын
Looking at Crash and Spyro remakes, at least remaking TPL this day and age will appeal to an audience.
@windy39354 жыл бұрын
@@VtnVivi Those aren't good comparisons. Jak never even came remotely close to the fame and popularity that's associated with Crash. Spyro may have been under Crash as well, but like Crash and unlike Jak, Crash and Spyro are as popular as they are as a series. The Precursor Legacy isn't a series, it's a single game. With Jak's inferior popularity, it'd be even harder than it already is to bring something like that back for the long term. Remember, Sly and Ratchet(?) left the collectathon field two generations ago as well. People need to stop interchanging collectathons and platformers, too. They're two different things, even though they've often existed in the same game before. It's mainly the platforming aspect that's held up well and there's still a healthily market for, not pure collectathons.

Solid work all around, nothing to complain on the subjective parts, but there is something about your intonation and pronounciation that irks me. It's like you are from the U.S East Coast at the one beginning of the sentence, then from Poland at the mid-sentence. Like the way you say "privy" at 10.11 . 99% of humanity pronounces it as "pre-ve", not "praiwy". I really can't wrap my head around it. Possibly it's just my psychosis? This is not to be regarded as a criticism per se, i'm just baffled.
