It's not just one ship bringing in ice, but losing one ship that carries ice means they lose enough water to trigger rationing. It's not just they lost that 1 shipment that was on the Canterbury when it destroyed, they lost ALL ice Canterbury was gonna bring in next month, and the month after, and the month after, and until a new ice hauler gets in the bussiness to replace the Cant, Ceres government (controlled by representatives from Earth) have to calculate with less water every single month. Water is not just something they drink. They use a lot of water to grow crops, to ferment protein using bacteria, to make oxygen (to breathe) and hydrogen (important component of fuel pellets and essential industrial gas) and the ships side thrusters that rotate the ships (RCS thrust) also work with superheated water. They can't move their ships without water, they can't breath without water. There's an insanse amount of water in the Solar System, but everything is far away, so they are relying on a lot of ships delivering ice ON TIME, reliably, because if one ship is lost or late, than somebody will not get enough water. It can't be oxygen production that doesn't get, it can't be agriculture, it can't be fuel pellet manufacturing. It's gonna be your shower/dishwashing water. That's why there's 'on time bonus' that they were gonna lose if they don't bring the ice on time to Ceres.

We see Havelok learning Belter Creole, which involves a significant amount of hand gestures (very vital to have a visual aspect to your language, when much of the time you’re going to be communicating in the vacuum of space). Jump to “hands where I can see them.” Since Naomi is a Belter, she’s more likely to communicate (even subconsciously) with gestures - so basically, Lt. Lopez is forcing Naomi have no cover from the interrogation. Last thing: Ceres is the largest and arguably most important single station in the Belt, but there are hundreds (likely thousands) of Belter stations and outposts - not to mention Belters who have spent most of their lives on ships with no “home port.” All that is to say: Ceres is the Belt, but the Belt is not just Ceres. Kind of like calling anyone from the US a New Yorker.

IMO Chrisjen Avasarala is the best written politician in sci-fi TV. Just to clarify: Earth is now almost certain than Mars DIDN’T blow up the Cant, because by manipulating her longtime friend, earth intelligence was able to see Mars “taking inventory” in a panic to check to see if anything was missing (so it’s very unlikely that Mars was making a concerted effort to start a war by blowing up an ice hauler). Chrisjen is absolutely ruthless, largely because she has to be. She’s essentially third-in-line to run Earth, and Earth has no shortage of enemies.

The Interrogator, Lt Lopez was indeed as you guessed throwing accusations and statements to get a reaction out who he was interrogating. The "focus drugs" he took make him hyper aware and his training allows him to interpret the reactions of the person being interrogated, tuning him effectively into a human lie detector. But He's not a mind reader, he does have access to an extensive database with files on everyone of our group, public and otherwise. In the last episode Alex (the martian Pilot) did say the the Donnager's jammers where in range, but he didn't actually know they had them on. If Mars had indeed destroyed the Canterbury and if they and come to finish the job, it stands to reason they probably would have. People from Ceres are Belters, there's belters all over the solar system, Ceres isn't the only station in the belt, in fact there's hundreds if not thousands of stations and outposts all over the "Outer Planets" Julie is indeed from earth, the OPA (Outer Planets Alliance) will just about take anyone who is willing to fight for them. But the OPA is also not uniform as it's really a collective of dozens of different factions. Cumprimentos de Portugal!

Holden's radio broadcast was exactly the right thing for him to do. He put the commander of the Donager in a tight position. If the MCRN killed or imprisoned the crew of the Knight, that would be viewed by the public as a confession that Mars had nuked the Cant. But the Martians don't want to be blamed for nuking the Cant, and the best way to establish that would be to treat the shutlle crew fairly and eventually have them agree to give a statement that they really don't know who fired that nuke, taking Mars off the hook.

The signal got out because while the jammers were in range, they apparently weren't on is my guess. The Mars crew were probably expecting to find a bunch of OPA terrorists on board and didn't anticipate such a message.

You’ve since seen episode 4 so this isn’t a spoiler. They were in range of the Donager’s jammers, but that doesn’t mean the jammers were turned on at the time. The Donager crew were on a rescue mission, thus there’s no reason why they would of had their electronic jammers on - the Canterbury survivors however mistakenly thought the martians were behind the attack and rather than coming to rescue them were instead coming to “finish them off”. Holden’s message suddenly put Mars into a pickle - hence why the crew immediately arrested the survivors.

Great reaction and pick up on what the Martian interegator was doing with the focus drugs; some reacters never get that. The Outer Planets Alliance (OPA) is a (very) loose coalition of factions throughout the Belt, not just Ceres. I won't overdescribe it, since you'll learn a lot more about it in upcoming episodes, but it is perceived to be somewhere between a trade association and nest for Belter radicals. There was no reason for Miller to arrest or even question someone just for having OPA tats. Ceres is the largest city in the Belt but it is owned and run by Earth corporations, which only adds to the animosity the people living there feel.

A better understanding of the asteroid belt is helpful in the understanding of the story being told. It is huge, and nothing like what is generally depicted in movies and TV shows. Here is a link to a neat video showing all known asteroids moving over time in their orbits: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJfZoGCLn8eSp80 A lot of asteroids orbit Sol on paths that intersect Earth's orbit. A lot orbit in the vicinity of Jupiter. As a whole, they form a torus with many of them ouside the ellitical plane upon which the planetary orbits align. One very large asteroid upon which a human settlement might be constucted might be 180 degrees opposite from Ceres and orbiting Sol out near the orbit of Jupiter. If so, a trip from Ceres might easily take about ten months one way. I surmise from the distances involved that The Belt will not be conducive to any sort of central government. Instead, anarchy is likely, or maybe lots of warlords with smaller territories to control. We have been told that piracy is rampant, making it likely that the OPA is a bunch of lossely allied pirate-controlled fiefdoms with a common interest in opposing any policing efforts by the UN or Mars and in not killing each other fighting over territory. It is uncommon, despite the billions of asteroids, to ever see two or more of them near to each other. It is rare that a ship would ever need to dodge one, and a blind pilot could fly from Venus to Jupiter withour ever getting near an asteroid. Ouer space is vast. In reality, space farers will almost never be faced with asteroids bunched so close together that a ship would need to be piloted like a car on an expressway during rush hour.

The OPA stands for “Outer Planets Alliance.” We will definitely learn more about them in the coming episodes, but regarding your question about the difference in treatment: the belter being tortured in ep 1 was caught smuggling stealth composites (highly sensitive and illegal military tech). The Belters with OPA tattoos on Ceres are just living their lives and aren’t guilty of any particular crimes (unless they are). I can’t think of a real-world analogue that won’t end up with me putting my foot in my mouth, but it’s essentially the difference between, I dunno, having a tattoo of your home sports team in your local bar, versus getting caught trying to plant drugs in the locker room of a much bigger rival team.

One of the things the show emphasizes is that Earthers have the luxury of idealism; I've always assumed that was why Havelock was learning the Creole--so he could really "make a difference," whatever that might mean... I also assumed Holden's message got out because the signal was unexpectedly strong (thanks, Naomi, and kinda arrogant of the Martians to jam lazily). Naomi's hand signal was a rude gesture. In theory, anybody could be OPA, in the same way, I suppose, that anyone could be PLA or IRA or ETA here in our time. (So, it's pretty effing rare.)

Ceres is just one station in the asteroid belt. Belters are not all from Ceres. It's similar for the OPA. OPA is not a homogenous organization. it's more something that emerges from a lot of places and groups around the belt and people who call themselves OPA or support the OPA are not synonymous with terrorists. SOME OPA people sure are terrorists, others are just activists or just general "belter freedom"-supporters. similarly, Alex was born on Mars and used to be a pilot for the Mars Navy until he retired and took the job of piloting the ice hauler Canterbury. He IS part of the (ex-)Canterbury crew, not of the martian navy (MCRN) anymore. That's why the martians keep him with the others. Julie is from earth but she sympathizes with belters so much that she became an activist and then an OPA member which also meant rebelling against her father at the same time.

@@y00t00b3r Which leads to the next point, that the people who identify as OPA are sprinkled all throughout the Solar System, with a couple of concentrations on asteroids (ex: Ceres, Eros), and some gas giant moons (ex: Ganymede), and some space stations floating in the darkness (ex: Tycho, Pallas). But the key is that they don't have a cultural anchor like Earth and Mars, so they are very distributed... though they all do seem to share a distrust of 'Inners' (for @andiecph, people from the Inner Planets - Earth and Mars - nobody lives on Venus or Mercury).
