Elephant death is a major concern among our society as more than 50% Asian elephant population is in India. Some problems pointed out by guests •Developmental projects in elephant's habitat. •No mapping of elephant corridor which narrows it and increase chance of human animal conflict. •forest livelihood is increasing so demand of Limited land is also increasing. Remedy a) Solar powered fences b) bee hives, Chilly bombs c) All community need to understand that elephant is nomadic animal and causing harm would lose it genetic pool and hamper environmental balance. d) Animal crimes need to be highlighted and punish those found guilty. e) Need for coordination between ministries. f) Insurance should be given to poor farmers which mostly are and change in cropping pattern needed. Elephant are closely linked with us both economically and socially with us. So, it is our prime duty to not harm them. They are capable of protecting themselves from natural problems. Thank you.

My like for the gist, Aman Raj! My addition to remedies - 1. Research to understand why such intelligent pachyderm (deliberately inserting this tech term for long time remembering) is hit by fast moving trains that generates enormous vibrations. 2. Dig rivers/large ponds in the forest areas and desilt the dilapidated. 3. Can we use satellite thermal imagery to see gathering of such large bodied animals on tracks and notify train drivers? 4. Retrofit Bee Humming device to front of train(instead of current plan to play at designated death zones), perhaps at a frequency suitable for Elephants, that continuously play all through the forest area? -- In 'thoughts'...

Elephants are vegetarians and they require large amount of forage and water because of its size and metabolism Petrochemical complex, mining area , agricultural area near the forest are impeding their free movement A proper map of the areas should be done There is no marking on the land (Cons) The public has to be informed (Awareness campaign) Environment Impact Assessments should be conducted before lands are allotted for commercial purposes Illegal killing (for Ivory Trade) Train accidents (Safety measures are introduced in Railway Budget 2013) Public education and awareness programs Research on Elephant management related issues Wildlife is a very precious resource and elephant has played a very big role in the development and history of India.. Elephants usually take a long journey into from one place to another (Natural behavior of Elephants) Electrocution is the biggest cause for elephant deaths India is a country which has about one-sixth of the world's population and one fifth of the landmass Tribal and the other dwellers (100 million plus people ) dependent on their livelihood on the forest Scarcity of water led to migrating and conflict Drying up of perennial rivers (Climate Change) Adequate financial resources and the technologies also are available The loss of crop and property to the farmer leads to many of the distortions People should not not see the elephant as a just an elephant death or one loss of gene pool as it is part of the larger ecosystem 40 percent of the elephants stay outside the protected areas in our country Solar operated fences Ban the illegal encroachments of forest areas Credible insurance should be provided to farmers who lose their crops during Elephant raids.. Elephant by nature is a nomadic animal. Very well spoken by our penalist. Top down approach is need of the hour. We need leaders having true love towards nature, people, with strong determination and will power. Otherwise blah blah blah and issue dies down. This is something very much achievable if leaders in Delhi sitting in ac rooms really touched their heart and possess the above said qualities.

We human being just forget the conservation work in the present era of development. We just are over exploiting the resources and habitat that are only meant for wild animals. In Jharkhand , the west singhbhum area that are considered to be the potential habitat for the elephant movement. By crossing such corridor elephant used to enter Odisa. In present scenario, such corridor are completely blocked by the iron ore mining. Just a single corridor is left for elephant movement and the miners are planning to dig it in near future and no one is there to help such speechless animals. If this remaining corridor is destroyed in the name of development then such landscape will have the same fate.
