Now you mention it I want to see midnight edited now to have random clips of donna getting a massage/pedicure etc etc. Like the doctors being dragged out then suddenly donna lying down relaxing with cucumber over her eyes for 5-10 seconds then back to the doctor being dragged. It wouldn't improve the episode and probably make it worse but I'd like to just see it now

Could we not also say Blink breaks away from the typical formula as well? Doc and Martha basically have the regular episode offscreen whilst we follow a protagonist who we have never met before or see again. Sparrow seems to have multiple companions but two get Angled before the ep sticks with one. Yes I suppose the Angels are a typical villain at least in terms of motive: they want to steal the tardis. But even when it comes to saving the day, on surface level it seems the Doctor saves Sparrow and co. But technically Sparrow instructed the Doctor, who then in instructed Sparrow, who then told the Doctor, who then informed Sparrow, who then Bootstrap, bootstrap, bootstrap.... Which of course means, does the text above matter? Considering Heaven Sent is the superior episode to Blink... probably not :P
@troytab6089
@troytab6089 2 жыл бұрын
They do break from the formula, but in a different way. He's talking about the episodes that have the Doctor on his own. You're talking about the episodes that barely have the doctor - Blink, Love and Monsters, Etc.

@Neil070

@@troytab6089 I thought of Love and Monsters in this context. Then I tried to erase it from my thoughts. I can't remember why DT and BP were unavailable (filming on location or something?) but Blink demonstrates that you can, with some imagination, get round that, just as when Bill Hartnell was ill, they made the Doctor invisible (a prank by the Celestial Toymaker). In those days, shows were live, and took up 50 weeks a year. Even the most dedicated actors need family time, holidays, etc, so scripts were written with one or more of the main cast missing, or "somewhere else". It's still done on soaps, Aaron Dingle "in Italy" because Danny Miller was, irl, on paternity leave and in the "Jungle" for I'm a Celeb. Love and Monsters, on the other hand, shows how NOT to deal with the problem.....

@@urmomdotcomhomefromnam1083 Correct! But that was already part of _Heaven Sent,_ the entire point of _Heaven Sent_ is that The Doctor is trapped in the _first_ stage of grief the entire time, denial. He simply refuses to accept Clara's death and let her go, the narrative tricking us into thinking of this as a good thing, when in fact it's an incredibly toxic and unhealthy way to proceed after someone has died. Moffat has talked about this, from the HS lockdown watch along. "Compare and contrast: what the Dr THINKS Clara would say to him (get up off your arse and win) and what the real Clara says in Hell Bent (why would you do that to yourself?) Actually the first Doctor Who story to run past the watershed was the TV Movie which ran in a 90 minute slot starting at 8.30. This late start time didn't prevent the episode being cut for violence (bizarrely the BBFC decided that the VHS release had to have the same cuts). This meant that the uncut version was unseen by UK viewers until BBC2's Doctor Who night 3 1/2 years later.

I think the show’s core value is in its juxtaposition of being for the masses and for the fans. In addition I think the shows very nature is that of a swinging pendulum since in the Hartnell years there was the “history vs. science” back-and-forth where episodes set in the future had more fantastical elements but setting that involved the past were much more grounded.

@@demon_hawkeye5269 the Master finding obscure information in the Matrix isn't at all out of character. In fact, you can basically sum the Master's entire character over the last 6 decades as a kind of spy version of Tyrion Lannister - he wears disguises and he knows things.

@@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg no, its not out of character for him to snoop but for that information to be accessible by anyone on the master's level of intelligence is logically hard to believe at best when it's one of the biggest, if not the biggest secret of the timelords

Chimes of Midnight and Natural History of Fear are in my top ten of all time stories. Charlotte Pollard edges out Donna Noble for my favorite companion. I have noticed that season after season, I kinda only expect to like three or four episodes, even then there's like only a couple each season that I go back to and rewatch. Now that Disney money is in the mix, I am excited that Doctor Who has a good shot at lasting until the end of humanity, but also will they eventually just own all of my joy?

I remember this episode really disturbed me as a kid, particularly because I liked Clara a lot, mostly because when she was introduced she was a dalek and I love daleks lmaooo

Nerding out about Star Trek for a sec, because man you got the modern one REAL wrong lol. Discovery is an experiment in fully serialized Star Trek story telling. The stories are in no way self-contained, unlike Star Trek up to that point, where even their serialized series, DS9 was *mostly* self-contained. Strange New Worlds is TECHNICALLY a prequel to the Original Series, but is more practically a full return to form of fully episodic series with what is called a "hero ship" by fans. Picard was another, shorter experiment in fully serialized storytelling, as a sequel series (or rather more accurately, 3 consecutive series, each focusing on different villains from the TNG era of Trek) to TNG. Lower Decks is technically adult comedy, but has about zero in common with Rick and Morty, thematically or even in most humor. When it's at its best, it's sci-fi before adult comedy. And it's at its best pretty damn often. Prodigy was... roughly animated at times, but was really good and weirdly dark sometimes for a kids' show, in a way that feels like it respects its audience rather than being light-handed because it doesn't trust kids to understand what death is.

I’ve been rewatching Doctor who after a long while and I realized that of the Smith, Capaldi, and Whittaker eras, Heaven Sent is the only thing that stands out to me. Nine seasons of television and that’s the only thing I remember in much detail. It’s definitely the best episode but says so much about the quality of those seasons…

Damn you for making me watch a youtube video about the deadly assassin! My problem with the Best episode of Doctor Who is that you need to have watched the previous episode to know what's happening and it builds to... a far less interesting sequel

I tried to rewatch the series 9 finale trilogy with my parents, they hadn't really ever seen it. I was baffled and close to offended when they called Heaven Sent "boring" and "when is something going to happen". But also they suck at seeing intricacies and subtext, they interpret things at a great surface level most the time. But also I get it, it's incredibly different from the status quo. Surprisingly they liked Hell Bent more, I am a Hell Bent defender but to call it better is something else lol

u have the vibe of "the only other queer audience member at a 7pm drag bingo (we live in a medium sized town and the straights believe this is a place they can have dinner and hang)" anyway i love ur vibe. we r walking past each other on the way to the bathroom but i have to say hi and compliment u and complain about the fact that i feel forced by Straight Behaviour to politely clap at this drag show and we are both having fun but also trapped in hell and we bond and get each others instagrams and say encouraging and lovely things on each others posts occasionally for the rest of our lives
