ND really pushed for their rival Stanford and Cal to the ACC. They just extended their TV contract with NBC until 2030 too. Just don't think the Irish are going anywhere. They have everything they want.

@@vistatiger7493 The B1G members still make more money then ND. So when the B1G starts paying their players they will be able to pay them more then ND can, so they will have better ones. That's why ND needs to join the B1G to close the financial gap and remain relevant because they are going to fall behind with the G-7s.

I thought the Big 10 should have brought in Cal and Stanford while they aren’t powers in Football they are both powers in other sports and the Bay Area is a very lucrative TV market. Academically Cal and Stanford are superior to all other Big 10 Universities. If Fox is willing to pay for Rutgers and Maryland why not Cal and Stanford? Much richer alumni base.

I think the Big10 presidents wanted Stanford and Cal -- academic prestige, top tier athletic departments (Stanford has more national championships than anyone), occasional football success. But Fox Sports told them no dice, and money talks. Academics is a footnote now, not a main concern.

@@atgdcommish608 the B1G could have offered, but did not. Cal is of no value. USC/UCLA also have fans in SF market. Stanford might not go anywhere without Cal, which probably ends any deal at all for the Cardinal.

The B1G is in a tough spot on this question. The west coast is a declining market for college football, as evidenced by USC et. al. having to leave the PAC. On the other hand, to address demo concerns, the B1G needs to effectively and heavily expand south. If 24 is the assumed limit, the B1G has already gone to heavy west. If 24 is the limit, CAL/STANFORD are inevitable, and #24 will be reserved for ND, that's three slots left. Not enough for that heavy enough expansion south, but the best likely available that are in brand enough would be GATECH, FSU & MIAMI.

I can see Stanford and Cal being the 23rd and 24th for the B1G, and then be done with realignment. They need to get FSU/ND/Miami/GT first.

Maybe ND will come with Stanford. Plus Stanford is in the San Fran/Oakland/San Jose TV market and they have more money then any other school. So they have a lot of potential, they just need to start taking football seriously and they could be a powerhouse.

@roris5882 that's the issue though. They refuse to take football seriously. With the transfer portal they will never win again unless they loosen their transfer rules. Also the early signing period requires them to accept athletes earlier, which they refused to do. If they don't change, they have no potential. We already have Indiana, we don't need another 1.

The Big 10 should get to 24 teams in four divisions. So as quickly as possible add six more teams. Notre Dame, Cal, Stanford, FSU, Clemson, and North Carolina or a Texas team.

ND, FSU, Texas A&M, UNC, Clemson, and Stanford, in order from most valuable to least, to the B1G. Then the B1G should figure out a way to ditch Northwestern, Indiana, and Purdue, because they don't need 3 schools in the state of Indiana or a tiny Chicago school with the addition of ND. Then add Arizona State, UVA, Utah and Colorado to get to 25 schools. They would be swimming in cashola.

The demo trends will most likely cause core B1G schools to decline academically, the cost of maintaining current levels of undergrad enrollment. Athletic dollars are chump change in comparison to academic research dollars. The Big Ten should have taken Stanford and Cal for non-athletic reasons. Universities tend to establish academic/research institutional relationships based on conference membership. The Big Ten screwed up here.

The educational endowments are NOT shared!!!! The B1G wouldn’t see a dime of Stanfords or Cal’s endowments. They share the research information, not the money. The ONLY revenue shared between conference members is sports revenue from the media rights contract. That’s it. Right now, that pays out $60 million plus per B1G member from Fox, NBC, and CBS. So unless a team can bring in the required tv audience, there’s NO invite. Both Cal and Stanford rank in the mid 40’s when it comes to the most watched college football teams. They don’t garnish enough eyeballs for the media giants to pay out extra. Great institutions, great sports programs, horrible fan base. Not enough fans follow these two teams on tv.

This boils down to who can bring in the most eyeballs? Oregon ranks anywhere from 10-15 most watched team in the nation. Washington is anywhere from 15-25 nationally ranked most viewed team. Stanford is typically in the 40’s. They do have some good years, but generally, they are in the middle. So unless Notre Dame demands Stanford to join the B1G to go along with their B1G acceptance, Stanford is low on their list. That’s the reality. Fox isn’t paying for sports that doesn’t make them revenue from advertisements. That’s what this is about. Selling advertisements.

Bottom line is that Washington, Oregon, USC, UCLA, Stanford and Cal belong in a college athletic conference. If not the B1G, a conference of their own. Hope to see it sooner or later.

If the B1G is really that serious about their academics, they would not leave Cal and Stanford on the table for long. However with the current situation in the ACC, they may come in with Notre Dame so ND could preserve their Norcal presence and those games will remain in conference.

The B1G doesn't need 3 teams in a rinky dink state, with mediocre recruiting, like Indiana and ND is more popular in Chicago then Northwestern. So when they add ND the B1G won't need Northwestern, Purdoodoo, or Indiana for football because they drag the value of the conference down.

Some teams will be in and some won't because the big brands and football blue bloods want to maximize their revenue so they can pay their players, like they soon will be legally required to. They don't want the bottom feeders leaching off of them because they refuse to pull their own weight.

@@roris5882 Having a team like Northwestern helps the schedules of Ohio State or Penn State. The blue blood football programs like Bama like having to play Kentucky in football. Nobody wants to play Florida's schedule this upcoming year except for fans who want their coach fired.
