Ford offers you three shades of white, but if you want green all three in Detroit tell you tough luck. Your choices are white, black, grey, red, or an ugly blue. Want a mid/premium trim without a chrome overdose? Sorry, Detroit can't comprehend that no one under age 50 wants chrome. Want a non-black leather interior? Good luck. Want three pedals? Congrats on your new Tacoma. Want a diesel half-ton? Congrats on your new Chevy/GMC. Want a diesel compact/midsize truck? No, Detroit laughs at you while you secretly pine for a Hilux. Toyota has coils and Ram has air bags but the rest cling to rusty leaf springs. Ford insists on the space-consuming floor shifter (and the corny folding gimmick) rather than a modern dial like the Ram. There are so many missed opportunities across every truck manufacturer. The only opportunity they never miss is a price increase.

You can tell Roman is planning on taking the Maverick for his winter commuter, as he demanded the luxury features to make his commute more comfortable. In the early 70's, all of the major manufacturers in the US were making small, economical trucks with a small 4 cylinder engines that sold great for light work trucks or personal vehicles. Manufacturers like Nissan and Mitsubishi gave up on producing a truck chassis based mid-sized SUV like the Montero and Exterra. There is a ton of potential market for those vehicles and they could be produced reasonably by sharing R&D and parts with a common base like the Frontier.
@Cloud30000
@Cloud30000 Ай бұрын
If there was such a big potential market, don’t you think a startup would sneak in to it and make a killing? Costs are currently too high to make a small truck that would be sold for less than a Maverick.

@jamesdaniel1376 Ай бұрын
@@Cloud30000 The costs of creating a car from scratch are astronomical thanks in large part to government rules and regulations. Most of the small manufacturers use off the shelf components from major automakers to cut costs on R&D ppl, but there still has to be a huge pocketbook to get a car into production. Even with GM's budgtet, ultimately Saturn ended up as a failed experiment.
@jerroldshelton9367
@jerroldshelton9367 Ай бұрын
"There is a ton of potential market for those vehicles and they could be produced reasonably by sharing R&D and parts with a common base like the Frontier." No, there isn't. The truth of the matter is there never was. The evidence is there if you're willing to see it. The CJ-7 was a product that people with no plan of doing Jeep Things in their Jeeps had no interest in buying. Stock for stock, a YJ Wrangler sucks on the trail compared to a CJ-7, but the YJ sold better, not because it was a better Jeep, but because it was a better "car." The Bronco II was engineered to go wherever a stock CJ Jeep could. They sold okay. Stock for stock, the Explorer that replaced it sucks on trails, but it was even more car-like, than the Bronco II, so it was a runaway sales success. The Explorer evolved into a front-drive car-based platform and it remains a solid seller. Cherokee evolved into a front-drive car-based platform. Blazer did, as well. People who bought Xterra and Montero generally didn't buy them for their truck-ness. They bought them in spite of it. Those products launched in the U.S.A. when about the only car-based all-wheel drive you could get was a Subaru. That's not the case now. "Manufacturers like Nissan and Mitsubishi gave up on producing a truck chassis based mid-sized SUV" precisely because the consumer demand for such products really isn't there. Nissan and Mitsubishi both keep North American customers happy with CAR BASED platforms that have a better shot at driving like a car than any truck-based SUV can. That might not be what YOU want. That's okay. Toyota can still cater to your desire for a truck-based SUV, if you really think you need one.

A few issues here: first I don't remember the Dodge Dakota ever having a 5-cylinder motor. I think you mean the GM triplets. -Second, rivian was never going to build that camp kitchen. That is a job for an outside supplier. When there is enough demand someone will build it, if someone else doesn't own the patent. -Thirdly, electric campers will be built on van platforms first, like Canoo, Rivian, VW, and possibly a future Tesla van. These however will likely be done in partnership with an outfitter.

Put 2 torquey electric motors on the back wheels and then 1 electric motor in the front that is geared for highway. I'm not even sure it would weigh much more than the trucks now if lets say they put that 3.0 duramax in since you'd have a much smaller engine along with no transmission. For people that are towing 5th wheel RVs it would be perfect. Even companies that are transporting construction equipment it would work well.

I imagine a SuperDuty Hybrid is pushing past the maximum combined weight limit for light trucks. Without reducing towing capacity, adding weight for the hybrid system would create a situation where a CDL is needed to tow maximum trailer weights. Good idea, but government constraints on combined vehicle weight come into play. Exceeding that is an expensive complication.

Bring back a renegade sized jeep but add removable doors and a back tire (a baby wrangler). Cut the price by 3/4s or so of a wrangler and I think it’d be a lot more appealing. After 6 months, come out with a pickup version that can go head to head with the maverick. With removable doors, I’d imagine it’s be a big advantage to buyers. It’d also help negate the big prices of wranglers and gladiators

I started off-pavement driving with a '69 VW Bug, then bought a new Samurai in '86 when I was 21. After that, I had an '89 short wheelbase Trooper, a '73 Bronco, an 89 Montero, an 87 Pathfinder, an 89 2DR XJ, a 98 TJ, a 2007 4X4 Ranger, and currently have a 2015 Renegade Trailhawk and a 49 CJ 2 A. Discounting the CJ 2 A, which has no doors and no top, I can't think of a single time when I wished I could take the doors off my vehicle. I often wish my CJ 2A had doors, though. What am I missing out on by not wanting to take my doors off? Let me re-word that and ask why that's such a big selling point to you? I absolutely DO wish my Renegade Trailhawk had an outside-mounted spare tire, but I actually use mine on BLM and Forest Service trails. Jeep did a pickup Renegade that they had out in Moab for the Easter Jeep Safari. I wouldn't count on a vehicle the size of a Renegade being automatically cheaper than a bigger vehicle. The less size you've got to work with, the bigger packaging problems tend to become, and you're NOT getting away with doing without all of the computers controlling the systems in modern street-legal vehicles, and they all have to go somewhere.

The only problem with all of this tech you guys love, is that for those of us who might want to keep a vehicle for a while, it can translate into big repair bills later on. I only buy Ram trucks because I love them, but my experience over the long run has been marginal. Thank goodness for extended warranties.

Another missed opportunity is making a plain Jane pick up truck that has all the things that a truck guy needs without all the extra fancy goodies. Some Ford dealers have started ordering plain F1 50s standard cab with the 5 L coyote and some of them throwing a a supercharger on top of it making close to 700 hp. And you can get them for around 50,000 non-supercharged with a custom look for less. They are getting a lot of orders for these. In today’s market, we are flooded with trucks in the 60,000-90,000 range!! It’s ridiculous! The average person can’t afford to pay that kind of price, especially in today’s economy. The interest rates have gone up for financing and people are stuck paying monthly payment that equal that of a house mortgage payment or at least close. Where does it end? I think the manufacturers should offer a more usable trucks for wheel drive and 2 Wheel Dr. that can actually tow something of substantial weight has a V8 or even a good six-cylinder for that matter that can do everything. The other trucks can do as far as towing payload, etc. in a standard cab without having to order it. Fleets that they’re smart would pay a lot less for a truck by getting the basic needs. It’s a truck it’s meant to work. Why do you think most construction companies use the base models? They’re easier to maintain less electrical issues to go wrong and easier to keep clean. there’s just a lot of buyers who don’t really care for all the extras. That would be nice but they just need a truck with basic necessities. Other stuff they can add later.

What Toyota needs to do is buy controlling interest in Suzuki, put money into bringing the Jimny to the USA and Canada, and then make a truck version built on the same chassis. They would sell a tonne of these if they did that. We have no affordable cars here. $30k base price is not affordable. We need something that starts at around $20k and tops out below or around $30k.

Whistlin Diesel abused the CyberTruck. It's going to cause damage when you drop a vehicle on its bumper. The difference being with a truck, it's probably just going to bend it's steel frame, not crack it. Also, you should never use a chain to pull something out. When the F150 applied its brakes, the chain had a lot of slack. All the kinetic energy of the 7000lb CyberTruck created a massive shock load which was focused into the hitch all at once. An 11k pound static load behind the truck is way different than any kind of shock load. And Tesla engineers designed the truck based on static loads. The rest of the manufacturers know the people buying their trucks don't know that that means so they have to take that into consideration when designing their trucks 😂.

The biggest opportunity missed has been Tesla spending lots of time and resources to make an unaffordable truck that has cool features but no core specs that make it better than the competition. I think the next biggest missed opportunity is a Maverick EV or PHEV. Especially since there is no competition for a small EV or PHEV pickup.
