The payload of a standard AT4X is around 1250 lbs. All those off road modifications lower the payload even more. Add the Alu-Cab, two people, food, propane and all the stuff needed for a weekend away - That truck is way over its payload capacity. Of course, that has insurance, warranty and legal implications.

Probably somewhere around 600-800lbs over the GVWR. Here's the thing... I've never seen or even heard of anyone having issues with insurance or legal troubles with this. Warranty is already going to be hard because of the modifications to everything (though also there's the whole Magnusson-Moss if you wanted to fight with the dealer/mfg, so it depend what fails). I've only ever heard people like you stating there will be "implications." But never seen them materialize.

In 1996 I did a 5 week trip from the Mexican to the Canadian border in my 1989 Nissan D21 Hardbody 4x4 pickup. Simple camper shell with all my camping, mountaineering and SAR gear in it. Highway MPG averaged 25, reliably. And that 4x4 never let me down in desert heat or blizzards at 10,000 feet. My "mods" for the truck amounted to the camper shell, good tires and a dual battery system. No lift kit, no nothing else, just lots of camping gear and supplies. Back then it wasn't called "Overlanding", it was just camping out of your truck. What gets me though is how pitiful the fuel efficiency is of the massive over stuffed, over priced behemoths being offered today. Just doesn't make sense to me spending all that money on the fashion statement when you could spend it on actually going places instead.

I’ll take quiet over bumblebee farting in a Coke can sound. The GMC does look sharp modified though!
@oni-one5743 ай бұрын
Imo, they don't need to and quiet is a great selling point for the smaller I4 / V4 displacements. Most of the cheap exhaust people put on their vehicles sound awful/obnoxious anyway. V6's sound awful no matter what you do to them. V8+ obviously trumps everything, but society has given up on those (and tbf, the cammed ones like mine are oppressively loud with a full exhaust replacement). One of the major reason why I didn't buy a Ranger Raptor is it's awful, terrible, disgusting sound. One of the main contributors to the GMC Canyon is how quiet it was. Felt as quiet as the Lexus I test drove.

I have added a bunch of similar mods to my 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 H.D. With LB-7 Duramax power and have owned my truck almost 21 years now having bought it used from its original owner after he had it one year only. Before all the overland goodies I used to get 19-21 MPG average out on open highways with same lift , same 37” tires , same factory 3:73 gears Etc. Now with mid height rack in bed , rooftop tent & awning mounted on it & bed mounted storage full of gear , PLUS cab mounted rack with 200 watt solar panels & 8 gallon aluminum solar heated water tank, and Full size swing out rear mounted spare tire set up like your red truck , my milage has taken about a 4-6 mpg hit as well . I have noticed if I can keep boost low ( 5-7 pounds at cruising @ 65-75 mph) I can get close to 16-18 out on roads , but if there’s any heavy head winds or major climbs in altitude and boost goes up into 25-30 pound ranges then I’m lucky to get 10-14 mpg at same speeds. Having the ability though to just about call anywhere , anytime “ Home “ though is “ Priceless” 😊. I’ll be hopefully taking about a month long “ Retirement trip “ next April once my plans materialize and may have more numbers to share from an extended period through 8-10 states here on West Coast including hopefully a return leg through mid -west and Texas to see my Oldest & my grandsons . Money saved at hotels & motels helps pay for fuel economy losses . It’s all in what you prioritize as important to you . What I find interesting in all these mods is they are done by the weekend warriors. I worked my entire career in the consulting industry and the pick-ups we used were completely stock. Yes we switched tires between summer and winter studded. Vehicles saw limited pavement use with unpaved industrial roads, new construction requiring 4 x 4 and lots of old roads that would equate what most of the weekend types would consider awesome. A few times we got to pull those mods out of a mud hole or snow drift that their massive tires failed in. Personally I think most of those modified vehicles seldom leave the pavement. They are done to impress I don't know who. Now I will admit some do get out there and use the vehicles as they are meant but I bet the stock can keep up in most instances.

I have a 2024 ZR2 (the blue one Andre saw a couple months back when I talked to him at a mutual friends house) and I'm not getting near that mpg using premium as well. Now, I'm typically doing 85 on the highway and when passing people have to....er...bump that limiter on occasion (LOL), but I typically get 18 (calculated, as the dash is always about 1mpg optimistic). Now, on my first Moab trip I averaged a little over 19 on the tank there and tank back averaged, so I was real happy about that. And on one tank on my recent 3,700 mile trip to Glacier Nat'l Park and back, coming from the saint Mary side back to my hotel in Whitefish, I got 21.3 I think, and was TOTALLY surprised at that, but I was going pretty slow. Average on the dash for that whole trip including 1 1-/2 solid days of offroading in Moab at the end of it, was 18.4, so, figure maybe 17.4 actual calculated avg for the whole trip. Considering I fought some hellacious headwinds winds/rains in WY (Surprise! LOL) in a couple of the travel days, climbing to higher altitudes several times (Beartooth Pass, Logan pass, etc.) and with getting maybe 10mpg while wheeling, I thought that was pretty good. I put 45psi in my tires for highway travel to try and get more mpg (I'm positive I get at least 1mpg over the 46psi recommended), but I think the difference in tires from my ZR2 (much knobbier) has to make a much bigger difference in the difference in mpg. As always, great vid!

I think the camper setup killed gas mileage. On this Ford, the lift took of maybe 0.5 mpg, tires 1, winch bumper 1 or thereabouts. Now Im at 12 mpg😂 But on the flip side these old Fords Chevies etc just keep on running

The lower fuel economy of the built truck, while not great, is still better than a stock truck like Andre’s pulling a small, lightweight teardrop trailer of ~2000 lbs or so.

26 mpg on an off-road truck is pretty amazing
@is65663 ай бұрын
Yeah but the Trailboss is not an off-road trim it’s a street truck with some off-road capabilities. A ZR2 and a Bison would be a true off-road truck and they have 16 and 14 MPG because they have more weight and lift and real off road tires.

@@is6566 I have a 2024 Colorado ZR2 and regularly get 17.5-18.5 even the way I drive it (85 on the freeway). Not good, but not terrible.
@is65663 ай бұрын
True. I think the Bison is where it gets really bad but even the regular ZR2’s 18 mpg is a far cry from the 23-26 of the Trailboss that the original poster was excited about.
@kx89603 ай бұрын
@@is6566 I'd like to see a 100% stock Trail Boss and ZR2 do a mileage test, then swap wheels/tires and re-run the test. I'm not sure that Andre has the HO tune (430 ft-lb) that comes on the ZR2 and 2024 Trail Boss. Since he has a 2023, I "think" he still has the mid tune that has 390 ft-lb, and if so, THAT would certainly account for a big difference in mpg.
@andrewb3253 ай бұрын
@@is6566 its no ZR2, but it has a 2 inch lift with fairly wide 32-inch all-terrain tires. Usually those 2 things alone mean sub-20 MPG on any truck. Andre's also has the high output tune. 26 MPG is awesome considering.

@@guentherwilke2055lol, no. It was in the very first video he did of it. He picked it up and was like "where's my cruise control?!" It was in several videos after that and if you look at the comments, people gave him crap about it for a long time. He was quick to order it and didn't pay attention to standard features and didn't realize it was an option, so when he ordered it, he didn't get that option. I think getting it is just as simple as replacing the steering wheel with one optioned for cruise control, however.
