Its not popular but i think Strickland v Izzy is. There is a million arguments against but the fact that Sean's defense was exposed vs Alex and Izzy is one of the best strikers ever made it so shocking that Sean pieced him up. "Average" fighters are getting so much better, this usually happens in sports, as it evolves and more and more people grow up in the sport, you see less dominance. It's why the best baseball teams only win about 70% of their games, and that's extremely elite, most years there isn't any team with a .700 win percentage. No one ever talks about little Nog losing to Sokoudjou, that by far is one of biggest upsets. Sokoudjou was a guy no one ever heard of and was literally 2-1 with 2 wins over nobodies, while little nog was a top light heavyweight at the time going 11-2 with wins over guys like overeem twice and hendo, and then when they fight, not only does sokoudjou finish little nog (who had never been finished before) but does it by knocking him out in under 30 seconds. Definately in the top 5 upsets, if not, the #1 upset for me
@ypsilonick8738 Жыл бұрын
You can blame this one on the punchers chance. A guy as strong as Sokoudjou just needs to connect one good angle and it's light's out. I personally find it much more upsetting when a champ gets decidedly beat, and its just clear that the other fighter had a more skilful performance (see Nunes or GSP)
@BiggieTrismegistus Жыл бұрын
@@ypsilonick8738That's true about the puncher's chance. The amazing thing about Sokoudjou is that he followed up his defeat of Lil Nog by beating Ricardo Arona. @BiggieTrismegistus Жыл бұрын
I'd never thought about Barão not knowing how to lose and I think you're onto something. Until the loss to Dillashaw he was considered one of the best fighters in the world and looked like he had a chance to go down as an all-time great. That one loss not only derailed his career but also seemed to erase everything he'd accomplished up to that point. It's kind of weird in retrospect.
@madgavin7568 Жыл бұрын
@@BiggieTrismegistus It explains what happened afterwards, Barao attributed the first Dillashaw loss as fluke and when they re-matched it showed in Barao's performance as he didn't look any better than last time, it was very much a repeat performance from Dillashaw. Barao's confidence was completely and utterly destroyed by what TJ did to him, and even when he wasn't fighting TJ from then he had poor performances even against middling competition, losing more often than not.

And if more and more money goes on the fighter, the odds go lower and lower.

Dillashaw vs Barao 1 is still one of my favourite fights, Dillashaw was untouchable in that fight, immaculate performance. Dillashaw just schooled him everywhere. Also Sapp is an asshole for trying to piledrive big nog.

i'm of the opinion that no fighter will ever be able to break the older winstreaks of people like silva because fighters have quite simply gotten too good

Its becoming a serious question now if newer champions can even get let alone break the title defense record of their respective divisions. Really the only fighter who is even coming close to the divisional GOAT, is Volk at 145 as the man is built different but even then we don't know if the next guy (Topuria) is gonna beat him or not.

Grasso can actually box to back up her grappling and bjj. She Weidman'd the champ. I know she didn't look that flashy coming up, but it became more and more evident later on even when she lost. Not sure how people didn't see that.

Did i miss Nunes vs Cyborg? Cyborg was deemed unbeatable, especially on the feet and Nunes slumped her. Huge. Nunes biggest win imo

I feel like couture Liddell should have got at least an honorable mention. The fact that couture beat Liddell at his own game in his prime was so wild.

Personally I think TJ vs. Renan should be much higher

Holly vs Rhonda being such a "huge upset" blows it way out of proportion. Anyone that wasn't a casual knew that Holly was way out of her league.

One thing that people get stuck up on when talking upsets is gambling odds. But there's a difference between an upset on the books, and the size of an upset in perception.
@BiggieTrismegistus Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what the difference is. The odds are based on the public's perception.

Calling a person winning a fight a fluke is the joke, not the odds. It's a win.

As you said it's because of his accomplishments that makes it such an unbelievable upset.
