Slayer came to my town my senior year of high school for a record signing for Divine Intervention at the waxie maxies at our mall. A group of us bailed out of school and headed to the mall. We we're the first in line. By the time the gates opened the line went all the way across the parking lot. Very cool guys to meet. Still have the autographed album cover. Sealed and locked away

Gene said that he only learned playing double bass drums 15 minutes before Dave asked him about it. Gene also said that Dave wanted him to be his personal drums instructor while the Slayer was on the road, but Gene declined since he wanted to play in a band as well. In the same interview (uploaded on YT a year or two ago) , Gene mentioned that he was playing too fast on Darkness Descends and had to record the songs at a slower tempo.

Haunting the Chapel (the song) feels like an early version of Hell Awaits which I think is why it didn't get as much attention. Hell Awaits (the song) is a better version of Haunting the Chapel (the song). And I agree that Chemical Warfare is a lot harder than most of what was around at the time because, like you said, the double bass drum while still remaining more structured and "rock" than say something like Napalm Death's Scum. So, yeah, Haunting the Chapel is the oft ignored "missing link" between the two styles of Show no Mercy and Hell Awaits but still sounds more like Hell Awaits than Show no Mercy. I kick myself for sleeping on this EP for so long.
@metalandrockzone4 ай бұрын
Actually when you say it about an early version of Hell Awaits then I felt when I was listening to this that it had something in this song that was very familiar, so maybe thats it. And yes totally agree, this album is the missing link! Thanks for watching
@JohanReinholdz19804 ай бұрын
But wait.. there is some double bassdrums on ”Show no Mercy” though, right? 🤔
@metalandrockzone4 ай бұрын
Well someone else pointed that out but I am not 100% sure to be honest that he did that and now after reading this article here I am even more confused as it claims he used the double kick but only live. bravewords.com/news/gene-hoglan-talks-about-helping-slayer-s-dave-lombardo-develop-double-kick-technique-haunting-the-chapel-was-the-most-brutal-double-bass-ever-written if he used it on the recording of Show No Mercy then for sure he used it differently from Haunting the Chapel and onwards and pretty sure Gene wants to take credit for that :) Btw saw you at Brutal Assault, great show (finalising my Brutal Assault Awards video and you are on top 5) and looking forward to your album Friday.

@metalandrockzone4 ай бұрын

@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS4 ай бұрын
@@metalandrockzone I only know the same rumors as everyone else. There were 2 demo's for this. I believe this was the 1st that was rushed for their friend at Metal Massacre when they weren't even really a band yet. No Life till leather demo had a rerecording and later pressings of Metal Massacre 1 were replaced with the newer version too, I think! Yes Metallica but I am actually not sure that Ron McGovney played on the first version of the song on that album because I read that they re recorded that as Hetfield was unhappy with the singing on first pressing, and I think even there was another guitarist on the first version Lloyd Grant. Fuck yeah! I reckon the almost completely unloved title track is even closer to death metal: those alternating palm muted/open chords under the verses, the constant double bass and the freak out second part (which would sound as good with measured bladtbeats), to me sounds like early Deicide. I fucking love this EP as much as anything up to and including Seasons.
