That whole thing was a sham on the part of the cops. There were no 'hidden compartments' in Popper's SUV. It was a drawer storage system, which are now very popular. Popper's love of firearms and the 2A is as well known as his love of pot for anyone who followed BT back in the day. And they put on killer shows. Got to meet Popper after a show in 2005, and he was gracious as hell. Still have the autographed hat he gave me.
@OromeVala3 жыл бұрын
I was friends with one of Poppers best friends who was a ranking member of their team before they made it big. According to him and others Popper developed a giant swelled head when they finally graduated from playing Wetlands and Nightingales. According to my now deceased friend Popper had became completely megalomaniacal and couldn't keep his hands off of his buddy's women and was basically acting like an obnoxious diva and thieving money from the other guys in the band. My buddy sold weed to and occasionally for the band, booked gigs, managed and roadied sometimes. My friend OD'd and died. Those of us that knew him are pretty sure it was because Popper stole his girl. Some people think it was suicide over the loss of Monika. The kid was definitely despondant over the loss of the girl and the harsh backstabbing by John. The general consensus in our scene, amongst the people that know is that Popper is one of the most glaring examples of how fame can warp a person. All of their good songs and jams date from the early period before they got big and these has beens haven't produced anything of consequence since that time. After they got famous and Poppers head swelled the general feeling I got from people that knew them before and after was that John Popper was a dick. I heard this multiple times from multiple people. I also have to wonder how much the gun lobby helped their career since we now know cointelpro was running through our scene like a freight train with "conservative" mafia proxy factions snitching, destroying and removing scene kids and cliques with differing views. Factions that support gun "rights", states rights, bigotry and "white" supremacy were allowed to manufacture and interstate traffic drugs, left alone and fed intelligence about their "enemies" or tipped off because they supported "American values". Those who disagreed mostly either got busted, snitched, were forced off the scene or were forced to live off grid to avoid constant harassment, and terrorization by cointelpro and its army of "conservative" mafia proxies. Popper is like so many, a dupe of his exposure to #NRAyouthbrainwashing and culture programming campaigns. His silly little hobby causes constant #guncrime which bloats police and government expensively creating tyranny and higher taxes. Dont ask him all his dumbass will do is parrot the propaganda he was brainwashed with as a child and refuse to be honest about it. Supposedly John has a really small penis and this might factor into his love of firearms. Certainly the "conservative" mafia and likely CIA were helping push those with ideas they favored and doing dirty those they did not. It's interesting to note that Ann Coulter is a member of our clique and an easy, druggie, party girl in those years right before she gets hired by fox and creates a career and wealth selling hatred of Hispanic immigrants. In hindsight now it sure looks like invisible right hands were pushing her up the chain like they did Popper and his firearm faketriot, police bloating bullshit. Chris Robinson both solo and with The Black Crows has continued to create relevant, great songs and music right up to the present. I originally liked Traveler and wasn't fond of Crows sets but over time it is Chris Robinson and the Crows that has stood the test of time and won my respect and John Popper and Blues Traveler that lost it. Has Popper written a single good song since the late 80s and early 90s? Chris Robinson definitely has. Popper had always been vocal about music just being a business. Its money. Theres no magic in it for him. I guess thats why there is no blues traveler brotherhood but there is a Chris Robinson Brotherhood.

I saw that Fillmore show! It was incredible, definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Bernie Worrell, Gregg Allman, John Popper and Rich Robinson all guested at different points. Phenomenal. All I can say is Chris Robinson shot himself in the foot missing out on that one. A funny thing when Popper came on he and Warren traded solos during a song. John started playing with his usual supersonic speed and Warren would answer back with slow, intense burns... you could see the wheels turning in Popper’s head as he watched him, knowing his rapid-fire approach was not going to compete. By the end of the tune he had slowed down considerably, playing with much more genuine passion. I like Popper and the band and think they have some great songs but I really question the “Blues” part of their name. I can’t ever recall hearing them play anything resembling blues.

I’d love to see a video on Unified Theory, the band that was two members of Blind Melon with a former Pearl Jam drummer and new lead singer. Their self titled album was great but they sadly broke up before they could release a follow up. The lead singer was the replacement singer for Live a while back too.

I never cared much for either band, really, but this story is an interesting tale about how ego's can lead to poor opinions of another and that escalates into harsher criticism's before devolving into insults and name calling. It's a symptom of human behavior not limited to Rock and Roll or any musical genre in particular. Wars are fought over similar events. The world will be a better place once we introduce a world culture that puts these opinions to the side without letting them create a negative influence.

I'm just gonna be honest here, I REALLY like the Black Crowes (one of my Top 5 favorite bands back during the "roller-coaster" '90s). Was with them all the way up to 'Three Snakes and One Charm' (last album featuring their best lineup at the time) before jumping ship due to how increasingly volatile the Robinson brothers have gotten both in the studio and on tour after that. Finally reeled me back in 12 years later with their successful comeback album 'Warpaint' immediately followed by my all-time favorite BC release 'Before The Frost...Until The Freeze'. Gotta give credit to producer Paul Stacey and North Mississippi Allstars Luther Dickinson and Adam MacDougall for helping to breath new life into the Crowes' sound back then, albeit for a brief spell. And say what you want about older brother Chris, when he's "on the ball" he's still one of the better rock vocalists/frontmen I've seen and heard over the past 30 years. Shame he spent a good chunk of his earlier Crowes period actin' a complete fool instead of honing his craft like he finally did during the late-2000's when the band reformed for the 2nd time. As for Blues Traveler, only know of them from that one big hit they had back in the mid-90's ("Run-Around", was it?). I do distinctly remember not being all that impressed by them back then, sounded too much like a generic "Grateful Dead-wannabe" jam band to my ears (lol). Besides, frontman's harmonica playing left A WHOLE LOT to be desired come to think of it. Crowes, on the other hand, actually managed to endure and still put out enough quality material to get themselves inducted into the R&R Hall Of Fame when the time comes. ;-)
@dannykent61902 жыл бұрын
I don't know man. I actually like both bands, but Blues Traveler clearly has more musical talent... from a purely technical standpoint, there's not much the Crowes play that I couldn't replicate with a few days practice. I am nowhere near capable of accurately playing anything BT puts out.
@versatilejams Жыл бұрын
They also had a big hit with “Hook”, and “But Anyway” got good radio play and had a music video. They are a popular jam band, and if you don’t like Popper’s style of harmonica playing, that’s ok, but that’s kind of like not liking how LeBron James plays basketball….

MTV here and all the rest. Figure that MTV recording out there somewhere. Lenny Kravitz stole the show though in my opinion. By the time BT and Dave Matthews played we needed a nap. 115 F heat index + alcohol + pick yer poison will do that to ya :-) Still an amazing music festival!

Years ago, a friend of mine was at a famous strip club in Vancouver enjoying himself. Unbeknownst to him, the Black Crowes had played the local dome there that very night. Lo and behold in walk a group of dudes looking like prototypical rock musicians. They walked up to my buddy, who was sitting up against the stage. A big dude says to my buddy, " hey, how about giving up your seat so my boss can sit there"? My buddy had no clue who they were says "why doesn't your boss ask me himself?" Chris Robinson says "where i come from, I'd have someone take care of you". My friend tells him "where he comes from , we handle our own affairs". Then my buddy asks who they're opening for... the entourage broke out laughing hysterically, a pissed off Chris turns on his heels and leavs in a huff. The big dude apologises to my buddy and says his boss can be "difficult".

I've followed both bands since their inception and have seen both many times over almost 30 years. Young Chris was an absolute douche. He seems to have become a better person recently, at least in interviews. The guys in BT have always been nice guys and great to their fans in my experience. I've shared beers post show and other stuff on the bus with them and they were just down to earth nice people. Musically I'd take BT from 90-95 easily, especially the live shows. Unfortunately with their breakout album and then loss of underrated bass player Bob Sheehan they lost their identity as a rock band and have never really been able to recapture the magic IMO. The Blues Traveler shows from 92-95 were some of the best rock shows I've ever attended and I've seen many. The crowes hit some interesting musical patches in mid career when people stopped paying attention that I thought were sometimes brilliant frankly. What they've done recently with the firing of the rest of the band and evolution to a nostalgia act is hideous though. It shows a huge lack of respect to Gorman, and every amazing lead guitarist that has played for them. Not to mention a tour of playing the debut album front to back is about the last thing that most of their hardcore fans want to see from them. I think the overall career body of work is superior to BTs by a good bit. I like both bands but think the Crowes were probably more adventurous and talented as a unit while I'd much rather spend an hour hanging out with the guys from Blues Traveler.
