I saw a black swan drift away across the water
A kestrel heading West into the Sun
And Old Man Yaffle tapped a beat while the chorus sang along
And I felt warm
I have a flat bed that tows me round Poole Harbour
I go there when the thoughts are turning blue
I sit there on the raft and let the bad things fade away
And I feel OK
So now I'll take things as they come
What's done is done
And the time has come for me to be moving on.
I have a friend who sits here beside my shoulder
I can't see him but I know he's there
I met him one day in mid October in the road
Where he lay cold
And I have fought him and blamed him for the trauma
He knows the score
Not any more
Our lives were meant to be entangled for all time
And that is fine
Because...
I wrote this song back in 2015 in the period where I was focussed on taming the beast in me that was PTSD (or what I'm now convinced should be correctly called CPTSD, complex post traumatic stress disorder). Because of that, for me personally this is probably the most important song I've ever written. It had been a few years of living hell for not only me but everyone around me. I'm very glad to say that with help from an incredible friend, after several months of effort, I got through. Life is immeasurably better nowadays :)
If you are suffering from PTSD/CPTSD then my heart goes out to you and I'd be happy to offer any comments about how I got away from it if you think they could help you.
The song was originally written for acoustic guitar and voice and until now I've not got around to recording it 'properly'. I've kept fairly close to the original idea and just added some drums, bass and harmonies (This took some doing as I have this perpetual urge to put squeally electric guitar lines in every track at some point!).
The song was produced mixed and mastered in Cubase 9.5, using a Fender CD60-SCE acoustic guitar, an Ibanez bass and not much else. The Drums were programmed with MT Powerdrum Kit2 and the video was made in the ever awful to use, VSDC free....the recently updated version....which is even more hateful than the old one...but still the best free video editor I've found.
In memory of a man who died far too young.
