Stonewall was probably the first real opening I ever learned back when I was 12 years old and I only played it. But I never learned what to do when it's "complete" so I thought "OK, cool start but now what". So I stopped using it. But I guess "stonewall is back in the menu bois" :D

Me too 😁, I said it is low level only because I have never seen it played in master/GM games. Also, when a player arranged his pawns like that, the other one would copy it right away since we knew that structure is bad news and totally block each other right away.

@Qoko88

Interestingly, I've played the Colle Zukertort quite often which is eerily similar, but the dark squared bishop is not ignored. It's essentially the same setup, but with b3 instead of c3, allowing some central breaks, but the bishop helps defending the center. The difference between the Colle systems vs the White Stonewall is that White plays Nf3-Ne5-f4 in the Colles vs f4-Nf3-Ne5 in the Stonewall. Differences are not huge, but the Colle setup is a bit more principled as it does develop a piece early. The result is the same if Black develops naturally: for both, this setup is only good if Black closes off the light squared bishop (2/3....e6). Hence most players prefer 2.e3 over Nf3, as that provokes Black to do the same (e6). The Zukertort opening starts with 1.d4 and 2.Nf3, where Black often mirrors White and keeps Bf5 or Bg4 open. If the light squared bishop comes out, White's essentially down a piece in the attack down the line. To give some pointers for the defender once the choke hold is achieved (2....e6 3.f4): a successful setup is fianchettoing Bf8: with a fianchetto'd bishop attacking the kingside is a lot harder, the central pressure is partially neutralized and Black has the option to take on e5 whenever it is favorable.

Unrelated but I really like wacky openings that you don’t see often (usually for a good reason but still) An opening that I quite like is 1. d4 c5 2. d5 Qa5 3. Qd2 b6 Note: I play black mainly, I know that the Qa5 could be countered with Bd2 instead of Qd2 but I’m a big fan of this opening anyway and when I first tried this it actually made quite a fun game and I deemed it the Silly Defence even know it’s just a variation of the old benoni

This is just a reverse Dutch. Anyone who's played the Dutch identifies with the "out of nowhere" attack. The Stonewall attack has lost some popularity since the days that Irving Chernev was gushing about it in Logical Chess, but it still works. I think the reason is that after its early wave of popularity, black players figured out how to defend against it, so as a weapon for white, it wasn't considered sound to take on the risk for an attack that people knew how to defend against. But now, decades later, people don't expect it as they used to, and it's a good weapon again at the club level.

One of my peers used to play Stonewall all the time in High School. I hated it... not because it was good, but because it was annoying. I liked open, attacking positions. Among other things, Black needs to take that knight outpost at e4 to shut out the light square bishop and pay attention to BOTH sides of the board... your own knight is keeping your pieces out of the kingside defense! I felt there were A LOT of mistakes in that first setup you showed.
@mayanm7105

typo my mate, black needs to take that knight outpost on "e5".. majority of d4 openings try to outpost knight on e5 and play a positional binding play.. very annoying. black has to stop that.. so always try the QGD Ragozin, benoni or benko.. or the rapid favourites 'budapest, albin etc.. enjoy and crack at the e5 postings

@4:15 Why would the knight need to take white's bishop? Couldn't black just move their king over to h8? Black's knight would also guard against white's queen moving to h5. Technically the game isn't even close to being over, unless black were to take white's bishop.

I don't know, to me this is just the stock attack tried by everyone who plays the Stonewall. Generally, it is popular with players who don't have much imagination and like to play the same familiar formation every game. I think a good way to mess with their plan is to hold off moving the d-pawn, e g. play Nf6, e6, c5, etc. Then, after they inevitably play Ne5, kick the knight with d6.

If, instead of 17...Qe8, Black plays 17...Bxg5, how does White sustain his attack on the Black king? White takes back on g5 and then Black brings his knight in to e7, defending the g6 pawn....and it seems the danger has passed??

Play vs Martin, but you need to move your king every other move.

i just need to find a thesis attack set up that i like...so many things to memorize...so many options....im stuck on kings indian (opening and defense)...but ...i would had messed this opening up....i would be too concerning on how to get my dark square bishop on the weak side of the king to open up....too many pawns blocking his way.
