@@gordbaker896 It's not that much of an issue once you're going, as the engine will put out enough heat to make a sauna out of the cabin. Issue is to get starting without seeing anything out of the front windscreen. And in cold temperatures having an engine idle doesn't help you much with getting it hot enough to consume heat for the cabin. That's why an electrical heated front windscreen is very nice. It also avoids ice build-ups if it's very windy and snowy, as it supercharges how much heat can be transferred to melt down the snow hitting the windscreen. Otherwise you need to turn down the heat to the feet and let the windscreen cool down, so that the snow will just glide off.

If you use an inner and outer sleeve when putting rotating parts on axles/bolts, and make the inner sleve just slightly longer than the outer one, you can clamp down on the thing properly without the outer sleeve binding up, similar to what is often used on bike axles to avoid putting clamping pressure on bearings.

I like your idea of maybe bending them back just a little so you don't have to reach so far forward to get a grip on them is a good idea but wait until you get the permanent seats so you can get the correct distance.. This is how it’s done in Germany. Apprenticeship means you enter into a dual education, you get hired by a craftsman/company and also will go to school. Usually two days a week school and three days work, sometimes also blocks in school where you do vocation specific training. At the end you do an exam and you go from apprentice to journeyman for crafts and can later go into a master craftsman program. But it’s got it’s troubles, craftsman used to be a much higher regarded profession, nowadays everyone just wants to go to university… things are going to have to change though. We need more people going into apprenticeships, it’s not sustainable to have only academics but no professionals. Already the supply and demand make it so it’s really hard to find someone to do work quickly and reasonably priced.
@AJNpa80 Жыл бұрын
In the states we dangle the carrot of higher education so everyone can pay interest for generations. Most of us born here that get in trouble young go blue collar, we end up business owners or foremen running crews of strong hardworking people from other countries. Many of them pay taxes on aliases, purchased social security numbers etc. It's a win win for anyone willing. I'm the only idiot I know that's done it by the books and sadly have been mostly restricted to people like me that dropped out or came to it for some other reason. I've been lucky enough to hire a few guys that got immigration status or temporary worker cards and they made me cynical. Just like my Irish , Italian and Ukrainian forefathers had to deal with before me, kicking the next guy coming up the ladder in the chin is the part of the American dream we don't advertise. I will say since I got away from dreams of expansion and decided to service stable volume with quality, I've been able to keep a good group of guys around. For years though, of a hundred apps we'd get 1 to come for a day and I'd have to fire them by noon. The best guys, young, strong and clean cut, chomping at the bit with a hunger for the American dream would shake their head with the language barrier and walk away as soon as I'd ask for information for payroll. Or more so scrutinize the name of picture given. On the books? No, gracias. Defeated looks. Everyone else would. Any more most of the guys work for themselves. One guy or his lady sets up an EIN to use as a company selling man days to other companies. The foreman would call their guy and say 3 or 5 guys tomorrow here, the company sends that company a check for the total at the end of the week, lists them as a sub. Gets away with it for a year or 5. When the IRS hits the company they fold up and disappear, the next guys wife sets one up. Funny thing is there are apparently more people who pay taxes in place of some of our own citizens who sell their information. So that some drunk can work under the table and have someone pay into social security for them. We got to be the strongest in the world for asking for anyone with the hunger to succeed. Now the powers that be pit us on the bottom against each other. We need a simplified immigration and guest worker program. But we can't get out of our own way sometimes. I love America. That's why I feel compelled to call it like I see it hopes someday we'll measure up to what we dreamt of.

As an alternate design for the control levers you could use nested DOM tubing on the bolt. By reversing the function of the master cylinders (left cylinder controls the right brake) the inner tube would connect the left cylinder to the right lever. The outer tube would connect the right cylinder to the left lever. Just cross brake lines to the calipers. (I made a drawing but know not how to send it.) Another idea to reduce interference between the steering and the drive shaft is to mount the master cylinders on the front wall and attach the linkage below the shaft opposite the steering arms. This would raise the shaft to just below the floorboard well above the driveshaft. Good luck.

Your talking about one guy controlling the steering while the other runs the throttle reminded me of a race car driver I knew back in the 1970s. They had a 1950s model truck that they hauled the race car on. He was telling that he always rode in the center because his crewmen were two big guys. This driver told how he always slept on the way home. One night he woke up with an arm across in front of him. The guy on his right had his left arm reaching across to the steering wheel and the right arm out the window. The guy who was supposed to be driving the truck had his head leaned into the corner of the cab sleeping with his foot planted firmly on the throttle. The guy telling the story said after seeing that, he had a hard time getting back to sleep.

A suggestion, you have the two brake bars actuating almost on top of each other to the point where if the left one loosens up or tweaks just wrong, you won't be able to engage it without it smacking the right one. Maybe fit some "guard rails" just between the two to have the left one slide over and the right one slide under to just give it a little more crud they'd have to break through before they started messing with each other? It hurts a lot less to be safe and it's cheaper now to put in a little more time than the regret and scramble you might have to put into trying to fix the issue out in the cold. Also, I've got to speak up for tracked vehicles and I feel like this will be addressed next Bombi build video. But tracked vehicles CAN be awful at rock climbing depending on the tracks they have on and what is being defined as rock climbing. If you got rubber studded or rubber treads on the tracks, they can do decent. Their biggest problem wouldn't necessarily be their tracks though, because a lot of tanks (ergo tracked vehicles) are tested going over 2 ft walls. So they can grip them to go over them, but since you're putting a metal track on them, that's just out of the question for you which is sensible. Metal for off the road, rubber for on and the only time you'd go on roads with metal tracks is if it's a time of conflict, there are no rubber tracks available, or if your in a Russian tank. Just saying, they have a propriety to use metal tracks on everything they have. But back to the biggest problem tracked vehicles have with rock climbing, that's ground clearance. They have great clearance where the tracks are, but they usually have a low belly to either make room for internals or they're using a torsion bar suspension system meaning the actual torsion bars are running across that belly. Throwing them up high would mean that belly gets lower and you can only rotate torsion bars so far before you're just rolling them back up. So while wheeled ORV's (Off-Road Vehicle) have a bit more of that mid clearance, tracked vehicles have low hanging bellies and probably more precariously, they can't crest over rocks like wheeled vehicles can. Wheeled vehicles will kind of "sloth" over rock edges. Tracked vehicles are more ridged, so they kind of go over the edge until they start tipping and then either slam down or keep leaning over until they're over the rock. So in short, depending on what you consider to be rock climbing and what kind of tracks you have on the Bombi, It actually could be really good at rock climbing. The configuration you're going for with the metal tracks just makes what you're assuming to be true because metal doesn't grip rock too well especially once it's been worn smooth from being ran through sand and dirt. But I wouldn't say all tracked vehicles are horrible at rock climbing while trying to discount "The Queen of the Desert" (The British Matilda II tank).

On the arms for the master cylinders. I think you have them reinforced enough for the degrees of freedom you have imagined. Where I am concerned there will be bending is around the axis of the handle's shaft at the point of attachment to the pivot rod at the bottom. This will put a side load on the master cylinder's rods and possibly eventually cause wear at the rod to piston cup/snap ring assembly and cause mechanical failure at that interface in terms of separation that won't stay stuck together when you push it back in. I don't think it will cause a leak. This is a very small chance of this occurring. A countermeasure could be to weld some guide rods onto the front of the arms (like imagine the master cylinder rods going through the handles forward, and mounting some round sleeves for those shafts to go through. The sleeves would have to be pivoting on the L axis of the vehicle (like the axis the diff is on) but NOT on a vertical axis, or on the centerline axis (which we call H for height and W for width in my business). This is certainly overkill, but it's worth putting in Tom's head. Thanks. Source: BE, MS of mechanical engineering, currently employed as automotive engineer.

I have an idea for stearing the bombee: On each shifter a crossbar is fixed to the one far away. If you sit on the left, the crossbar on the right lever must be fixed and the left lever must move with it. You have your right hand on the right lever and if you pull the crossbar with your left hand, Bombee has to move to the left. Because the crossbar pushes the left lever backwards. - Du fährst nach rechts, wenn du die Querstange nach vorne drückst... If you sit on the right, the same structure works and everyone sits up straight and doesn't get a herniated disc. The problem is the distance to the windshield to turn right.

Bostrom Pro Ride Low-Profile Mid-Back Seats would work well. Very low mount, air ride to compensate for no suspension, arm rests and bolsters to keep you seated. The back is low so that the rear passengers would have more lean forward room when getting in and out. Low back is not a concern for comfort ... its a preferred seat for the old school trucker

Maybe use a castle nut on the brake pivot so you can leave it loose and cotter pin the bolt. Then use bronze thrust washers between the levers.
@mammutMK2 Жыл бұрын
The seats fit pretty good, I don't see the need for smaller seats...unless the rear has less room, then it would be better getting smaller ones. I would weld a grip on the roof in the middle, so that the driver-monitorig has a place for his second hand. It may sound cracy, but since the snowcat is off the scale, I would do some fun lighting with the breaks...maybe even with dynamic break lights. So that the break light depending on the used break goes on and brightness depending on how strong your breaking. I don't know if it is possible to install a heat sensor on the breaks, even though I don't think they will overheat, but that way you know when it's about to get critical. Oil temperature monitoring would be an advantage as well. I know that from lpg motors, under load the oil can get very hot, even though the water temperature is fine. Since your running high load at low speeds, thinking transmission temperature could be something needed as well... knowing it gets hot before it blows can't be bad either.

Nooooo!! Don’t paint the planter!!! It’s such a great conversation piece with the patina of the Bombi. We all start somewhere, great to see you guys learning by doing!

As am sure your fully aware the toughest part of a build is getting fighting thru to the end. Good luck. The Bombie build is going great.👍👍👍👍

well considering that they never really finished the Wrecker, im guessing that the bombee will take a while as well

Yep, the last 2% of detail stuff after it runs and drives, which basically never gets finished.

Heh, the part about the tack welding was pretty funny. I've had a trailer axle spin right after I picked it up from the repair shop! They forgot to weld the seats and the torque from the brakes made the axle spin a few times and shift sideways a couple inches. It was essentially spinning until the brake wire ripped itself apart after wrapping around the axle. Needless to say I turned right around and went back to the shop!

Matt has that important 1961 Corvair shop manual. I think I'm only missing the 69 supplement. Got them back in the 80's. Good reading without all the modern acronyms for everything.

28:47 Here in Ontario, Canada .. A snow Cat like this would be lichened and registered the same as any snowmobile, you need a snow mobile license and same insurance, and then you can operate it on any roads, trials and lakes where snowmobiles are allowed to operate.

Jonah, get that welding nozzle in a lot closer. Also, grind that paint off before trying to weld. You'll get gnarly welds full of perocity if you don't.

I think the brake handles would look pretty cool with T handles on them like excavators use, make it easier to pull both at the same time too.

WOW. Just checked out your web site. Being a 1/64 scale die cast collector I was excited to see the Morrvair and Banana die casts. Then I saw the prices. OUCH. I open mine and take pictures of them. Thought about making an off road diorama and use the Morrvair and Banana, but I'll wait. Anyway, keep up the good work. Love your channel.

Matt you seem like such a cool guy and fun to hang out with! I wanna come meet the gang someday and go on a recovery with y’all! Plus you all are so damn smart and handy! But Matt I worry that you’re gonna burn yourself out and not enjoy this stuff anymore. Jamie needs to take you on a nice vacation! Anyways love watching you guys and learning so much! Keep up the absolutely awesome work!

wow looking great! Just a suggestion.... You could make the gas petal extend to the other side and it could be operated from either seat, May be convenient when on recoveries. Or eating spaghetti. Then everything can be accessed from both sides with the steering levers in the center>

that steering looked almost perfect like it is 😂 i was just going to say as a fabricator to compartmentalize the floor so it was easier to access what needs to be for maintenance and you did 👏👏 love how far Rhett's fab skills have Improved ❤❤❤❤

should well on L bicycle handles for the steering sticks. It gets really old resting your hand on hollow poles. This also allows you to manipulate the steering better with all your fingers

I love that Rett is in a trade program. He will be running laps around Matt with his technical education that can overlap his real world mentor's experience. I think every parent wants their children to be more successful than them. Rudy seems to have taken his base knowledge from Matt and ramped it up. I'm so happy to watch this stuff.
