You lock in and share the secrets only long term drummers can~ That’s what connects drummers hanging out talking shop. We create a drumming language of geometries and mathematical sequences in rhythms. The code patterns we turn into an expression of the ancient rhythms of life. Thanks for the engine breakdown it’ll come in handy. 😊

A great example of this is in Moby Dick after the hands and timpani parts when Bonzo begins the final section build up. I love sitting down at someone else's kit and kicking in to this and looking at peoples reactions. It also makes for a great fill platform. Thanks explaining this to the world Terry.

I'd actually argue Baker really made some big steps with this stuff. By no means as complex as some of the modern double bass stuff I see, which is just insane, but Baker had his right foot as a steady eighth note pulse, with the left filling in with rhythm. He did still totally chug away with 16th notes on the bass too. There's a story I read with Bonham on a double kick set later in his career, (not in studio mind you, maybe at someone's house?) and he apparently really doing some complex rhythms with his two feet, shaking up what each foot was doing. I almost wish he played double bass more; I know he's really well known for his unmatched single bass work, but I think it still would've been cool

Nice video! Is it really a preference to bury the beater? It seems like it’s significantly easier to bury the beater. I have to push pretty hard to bury it. I think the tension in my pedal is pretty high but that tension also makes it easier to do heel up slide doubles. If it’s too loose then I get flutters almost every time I hit the bass drum. Very frustrating.

I have a question for Terry: Did you come up with this name, the Bonham Engine? Or has that been a term since forever? I only heard of it via these videos, although have known what it is since I was a kid in the 80s.....didn't know it had a name til I started watching these Apologies if you've covered the history of the name.....I admittedly have not seen all of your videos. Thanks!
@bonzoleum3 жыл бұрын
The BONHAM ENGINE is just what I called it as it propels the Moby Dick groove so nicely! But the concept originated earlier that Bonham of course.

Why does it have to be right hand left foot, left hand right foot if all the hits are played on the snare, Wouldn't it sound the same right hand right foot, left hand left foot?
@SJF983 жыл бұрын
It's a good question, and like all good answers... Yes and no. The thing about switching it between your limbs is you now have different options for orchestration etc. Also you are asking your feet to swap the upbeat and downbeat which is key and takes you into other realms of independence etc! Terry's naming of it is also great, because it makes it easy to recall, a la Bo Diddley etc.
