As a thought I've looked at planting trees in the ground but use pots with side holes in the sides rather than the bottom. This will add in digging up in the future and encourage more radial root base.

This made me think it also may be a good idea to chop off the top of the pot and leave the bottom, and plant that so the upper roots can grow horizontally unrestricted. Another experiment I’ll have to try…

The terracotta pot bottoms for holding in water seem like they would work well for this

@@TheBonsaiJungle Yeah, for me it's the dealing with the tap root or its replacement roots. If I only have to slice the side roots with a shovel without having to worry about the roots underneath.
