It's creepy hearing those similarities and you made me curious. So I searched on Wikipedia the article about the Titanic. I found an interessting side note: 18 years prior to the publication of Robertson's novel there was a ship called Titania, which collied on 9th of July 1880 with an iceberg and sank in three hours time. It's mentioned that Morgan Robertson took this accident as inspiration for the novel. There's a reference to the Times of London to back the accident up. Haven't they learned from it? Calling another ship Titanic? Why?

Really liked the tone you set for this video, Gavin. It's incredibly eerie the similarities that were set out between the fictitious Titan and the tragedy the struck the Titanic. We may not have evidence of this, but surely the shipbuilders were aware of the story, but then it comes down to, perhaps, the turn of the century mindset and the self-assurance behind their creations. It's remarkable how fiction can go on to echo true events, and can easily be written off; and yet, the specifics of how the Titan sank in half being like how the Titanic sank is beyond eerie.
@GavinReadsItAll
@GavinReadsItAll 3 жыл бұрын
So much eeriness in this but I definitely think it was just a common mindset that the ships they build are the biggest and strongest and it wasn't until the sinking of the Titanic happened when they realised they weren't invincible. But yeah the specifics are just so similar!

It's important to remember that the feature film, Titanic, by James Cameron was NOT a documentary! Jack & Rose didn't exist; neither did the people associated with them. Molly Brown was real, but was inaccurately portrayed, for some reason. She DID take over one of the lifeboats & it was she who threatened a crew member, not the other way around. That's why she got the nickname, "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." It was a huge waste of Kathy Bates. There are PLENTY of excellent documentaries on Titanic available for free online. I've watched lots of them right here on YT. There are also a couple of crap "documentaries" based on conspiracy & conjecture. I was able to spot those pretty easily through a quick scan of the vids, their titles, thumbnails, & descriptions. There were a slew of new docs that came out in 2012 for the 100-year anniversary of the sinking. TL;DR - Don't watch the DeCaprio & Winslet romance & think you know all about Titanic. Some parts were historically accurate, like the ship breaking in two, but it was a fictional love story, not a story about the ship. Read, or listen to the audiobook, _A Night to Remember_, by Walter Lord, or watch the older feature film based on that book for a non-fictional account of the ship & her sinking.

I did some looking up myself and just put this together.. The book was written by Morgan Robertson right The titanic was owned by J.P. "Morgan". The wreck was discovered by "Robert" Ballard... Yes I know that it's Robert and not Robertson but putting the 2 together was something I found interesting. More so Robert Ballard's "son" also comes up from being killed in a car wreck at the age of 20.

I had a Titanic phase too. Not because of the movie but I went to the museum. You were given a replica passport with the name of a passenger and when you got to the end you could see if your person survived (mine did but my sister and dad’s didn’t) definitely something that stuck with 7(ish) year old me. Fun fact that one of the designers of the ship’s wife had a nightmare only a few days before the voyage that the ship sunk and convinced her husband to sell their tickets. I’m not 100% sure but I think he sold them to a friend who died on the ship.

Oooh so interesting! I think it's a lot of coincidence, the names both suggest 'biggest' so its understandable that the fictional and real biggest ship ever would be named titan(ic). @@GavinReadsItAll It only had to be one really, to spread the idea around. Someone could have read it and then word of mouth could have spread it until the right people were intrigued enough to want to try it out and see if it was possible to make something like the book said. Perhaps word of mouth got the figures wrong or perhaps the number of compartments and such just weren’t possible so the titanic ended up having a different amount. That doesn’t explain the disaster being the same though right. Unless it was just kind of common for ships to hit ice bergs? Or maybe they just thought such a giant ship would be more likely to hit one because it takes up a lot more space than other ships. Who knows really lol could be anything!
