THE BOSS of the Watch Game! - Patek Philippe Nautilus 5980 Rose Gold!!

It's hard to think about the watch game without thinking about the Patek Philippe Nautilus. When it comes to the Nautilus the one that tends stand out most is the 5980/1r. This is watch is the full package. It has style and class, size and function. And status? Well we already know that the Nautilus has had that for quite some time now. It seems to be that all you hear today in the Watch Game is Nautilus Nautilus Nautilus. Although they have become very popular in the last 3-4 years, the Nautilus has always been a top contender. I would say that the 5980 chronograph is possibly my favorite model from this line. You get the complete package.
Size: The 5980 has the perfect size compared to the other models. Its slightly thinner than the 5990 but almost double in thickness compared to the 5712 and the 5711. I feel that overall it has the perfect size. Once upon a time I wanted them to make a bigger Nautilus and they blessed us with the 40th anniversary 5976. After wearing it for a while I noticed that it simply is too big. Almost a bit obnoxious. That's when I really began to realize how perfect the Nautilus is.
Dial: The 5980/1r comes with a Chocolate/Brown color dial with a very balanced look on the dial layout. The 5980r that comes on a leather strap brings a silver ring around the sundial. This looks great on that watch but however would look way to sporty on the full gold bracelet model. This dial combination is the perfect blend of style and class.
Value: Everyone knows that the prices of the Nautilus have been through the roof the last 3-4 years. No other model has stunned us more than the 5980/r.
To think that 6 years ago you could actually buy one for about $70k lol. When this watch reached $110k I thought $125k would be the ceiling. Then it shot up to $195k and pretty much shattered many peoples dream. Today the price of the 5980/1r has remained strong and can be and has weathered the storm. My guess is that they will discontinue this model with the 5990/1r and the prices will jump to $250k
It's safe to say that the Patek 5980 is a heavy hitter in the Watch Game.

Watching this 1 year later and loving your watch reviews. Agreed. This is the best heavy hitter comparing with the 5990 rose or white gold perpetual Patek as the dial looks cleaner and it’s rose gold. Definitely a much better choice for a super heavy hitter than RMs etc. elegant, sleek and yet showing immense presence. Velvet and steel.

Agree too. Eric said it best in all his comments. Blue dial and rose gold doesn’t match. And the case shape of the 5990 1r is ….. weird. Look closely and the bezel and pushers are different from the 5980 1r. The 5980 1r is just …. Perfect.

HI Eric, great channel! I am a fan from Taiwan. The way you talked about watches and the way to show your life style is with class and taste. I admit, I also like some of the behind the 'scene' about how the trade is conducted from other channels. However, I feel they show them TOO MUCH and and feel like collecting watches is ALL about the value of it! Your channel have a good balance between the VALUE and the PASSION for collecting watches. It is a banger of a watch but man truly if this didn’t have the hype it does would I still love it as much? I still think the best buy for your money and the absolute perfect rose gold piece is the Royal Oak chrono!! Size, fit, look and bracelet is just perfect! I liked the original 2 you did on the 5980 and 5990, at your previous establishment, on the 5980 'Gentleman's watch;' in an all white background with your trademark shades on and classical music playing in the background. I like these videos showing Miami, but occasionally you could do one like I just described, as if you are in your office buying it and having it illustrated. I think the 5711 is too slim and don't like the construction like a ship's porthole. They discontinued the stainless steel 5711 model last week and have been making noises to that effect for some time, starting at Baselworld 2018: The CEO/ Jeffe owning Stern family, Thierry Stern, doesn't like it distracting and detracting from their other catalogue. Which, like A Lange & Söhne are mainly precious metal and complicated movements; or basic 3 hand precious metal watches. You pick up a bit more, like the Mars landings by NASA, each time you re-watch one of these videos. 'Taking a machine gun to a knife fight.' The very good Marc André Deschoux, of Geneva/based The Watches TV, who is also a very good presenter and has a professional video production company, covered the withdrawal of the 5711 in this months February round up and Watchbox's Price Fixer, Mike Manjos, in his weekly Saturday 'State of the Market' and wanted Patek Philippe to improve the clasps with micro adjust, like they have the movements, which have only just got stop/ hacking seconds, to set the time accurately. That's why I think 5980/1R will remain the ultimate grail. The one they just introduced 5990/1R will replace 5980/1R, and again, I own 5990/1A and the watch is too big, even the rose gold with blue dial looks sick. 5980/1R will be in access of 350k USD next year (now brand new ones are trading around 220-240k USD). So if you guys have the money, now it's the time to buy 5980/1R and hold on to it.

For everyone saying there’s a watch game or that this watch is a heavy hitter... honestly, you need professional help. Normal people don’t give a crap about what watch you have and serious collectors honestly don’t give a crap about the hipe... is more about the fact of collecting, knowing people in the way and learning about this nice hobby... good if you can afford this watch and want to have it, but in my books, is more about the people and the stories than about bragging about the most expensive or exclusive piece... this is why we , the collectors have a bad reputation of being snobs, I collect from PPs , APs to Bostoks , Baltics, Seikos... and I love to talk about watches with everyone, without showing off or rubbing in their face the most expensive pieces...
