You also have to remember that at the time this film was made, these actors weren't as big as they became later. They were more or less just starting out, but now years later that they are all megastars it's definitely a super impressive cast and makes me want to watch this film over and over

Hers a quote;17. When the higher officers are angry and insubordinate, and on meeting the enemy give battle on their own account from a feeling of resentment, before the commander-in-chief can tell whether or no he is in a position to fight, the result is ruin. Armies succeed through coordinated command and action.

What is used to gag them? Are they wooden blocks held in place by rope? Was that the method used in the navy at the time if someone had to be punished? More likely i guess a gagging would have been done by anything available.

Time under the command of the Captain may play a role, but publicly and immediately reversing the decision of a subordinate hurts the entire chain of command (only my opinion).

Bligh didn't give him the order to gag them both. Fryer looked toward Bligh as if "What do I do?". The look Bligh gave back to him was one of, "You're an officer Fryer. Don't look to me, this is your call to make." So Fryer made the call to gag them both.

@@swlc5555 My interpretation is that Friar knew he was gagging an innocent man and that it was part of keeping his authority on the men. Christian questioning in front of the men was a problem and Friar was conveying that to Bligh who was like "I know, sorry, but do something".
