NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers might find advice provided in this talk to be helpful as a complementary approach, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. This talk only represents the speaker’s personal understanding of hormones and health. Claims made are not corroborated by sufficient scientific evidence. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Brain chemicals covertly direct female hormones, but their effects on behaviors, emotions, cognitive abilities and relationships can make us vulnerable. The more we become aware and understand these vulnerabilities, the more we can transform them to actually empower us…
Marwa Azab has been interested in human behavior and why we do what we do since she was a child. Her interest compelled her to complete two advanced degrees in Psychology and a PhD in Neuroscience. She has been teaching in the Psychology, Biology and Human Development departments, presenting to various audiences ranging from first graders to seniors and is a frequent contributor to the Huffington Post.
Her approach to understanding any human behavior-or misbehavior-is unique because it is Gestalt. This interdisciplinary background allows her to intersect fields and come up with innovative ways to understand “why we do what we do”. She is a firm believer that it is at these intersection foci that creativity and novelty find fertile grounds. She practices this holistic approach in individual and group life-coaching.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Period at 9yrs old... severe anger/mood swings at 12, depression at 13, panic attacks and anxiety at 20. At 28 I was diagnosed with PMDD and told there was nothing I could do except get my uterus removed. I'm 36 now and FINALLY found a doctor to help with my PMDD. I've lost 27yrs of life because of doctors brushing it off and telling me to take motrin or get out more.

Hi there. I think it would help every other woman with pmdd Symptoms if someone whos got their ovalries removed or went through a Hysterectomy would document the physical vs. The psychological changes in detail via the comments. I'm really interested in this.

@@biancahotca3244 diet and Journaling. Seems odd, but I journal to track how I'm feeling. That way every month I can know what's coming and can support myself better. Diet, coincides with the Journaling. If I need to add more iron, protein or carbohydrates I know to. I also prioritize sleep and have a support system at game so that they can also be there for me.

Marwa, this was amazing!!!! I have recently been diagnosed with a hormone imbalance, after seeing 3 doctors, two of which said it was "just pms" and hormones couldn't be read. My FSH and LH levels are all over the place, and I have a treatment plan. I'm also now working with my body and learning to understand it more. I'm incorporating more vegetables into my body, probiotics, and ensuring I get enough sleep! Thank you for this talk though, it highlighted just how sensitive your hormones can be to other parts of your body and it's not just always a psychological problem.

HANAN TEHAILI I am a big fan of yours. It is better to see a functional medicine doctor or naturopathic doctor if you can. They understand these issues much better. Allah SWT gave us so many plants and herbd to help heal ourselves and regular MD's just don't know most of the time. They get barely any training on nutrition.

Very good talk, this information needs to be heard. Many doctors don't take the issue of women having hormone imbalance and other related PMS issues seriously. Thank you for bringing this topic to light, we women intuitively know when somethings isn't right, we need to hold our health care providers to a higher standard to find a holistic solution, and not just prescribe a pill that may or may not solve the multi-layered issues that we are dealing with. It is about doctors (who are predominantly men) taking the time to truly listen to us to carefully and compassionately.

Carmen LeMon same. I've been suffering for years and years but because I don't have visible endometriosis the multiple gynos I have seen just say I have bad periods and there's nothing to do but try different birth controls. I've been on half a dozen different birth controls, gotten an iud, taken intense narcotic painkillera and take zofran for constant nausea at least 1 week out of the month but not even that really puts a dent in my suffering. I'm currently on dat 3 of not being able to leave my apartment because of the "period pain" that my dr continues to shrug off as just a normal thing that I'll just have to learn to deal with. It took until 9 pm today to even feel well enough to drive to the pharmacy to pick up medication and I just got home and immediately threw up after trying my best not to vomit from the nausea and headache while driving..If only this was actually taken seriously..

What is talked about in that video can "save" my life. I'm right now living like my 240th week of hormonal waves/pain/depression/intense fatigue/loss of way too much blood/insomnia. I often think, I'll never have a normal life, I'll never be able to build myself, and to build steady relationships, etc. However learning how your body and mind works and being kind to yourself and trying to have the healthiest lifestyle as possible, and being transparent about it with the people around you so that they can understand & support you is truly the key. Thank you for this video !

Most appreciated talk! I went through a horrible menopause, I wasn't prepared for the psychological along with physical changes I experienced because, no one talks about it enough to help prepare women for what we may experience and how to cope. I found it easier to stop socializing, my life became calmer without the drama of others, but isolationism can't be the answer.

I have been experiencing major acnes, hair loss, acnes in my back, hormonal scars on my face and so many more. i went to the doctor and he prescribed some hormonal pills to balance my progesterone level as he noticed my body is producing testosterone at a disproportionate level. The pill actually changed nothing. I believe my state of mind truly changed everything as i was being more positive and less stressed out my hair loss and acne diminished at a remarkable level. One year later i find this talk, Dr Marwa you are amazing!! whatever she said is entirely true, the main problem is stress and we as women need to get a grip of it since it manifests in such a way that is drastic to us. May we all find way through our hormonal imbalance.
