The issue is when they rely on the whole female cast as a gimmick for the movie and don't bother with anything else. The reason some of these movies did amazing was not because it was a all female cast. It was because it was written, directed and acted well. Most studios focus on the just the female cast and forget about the other aspects, which end up tanking the movie

Completely agree with you, studios will just hire Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson or whoever else and just expect that to sell the movies…
@iusedtowrite66673 жыл бұрын
Exactly. They market it on the basis of just them being woman and comedian and nothing else

Loved this video, it’s sad how a “female led” movie failing is attributed to the female part and not factors like the writing or the story

I first watched bridesmaids as a teenager, but I recently rewatched it, and now that I'm in the wedding era of my life, it hit so different. Being a bridesmaid, and especially being a maid of honor, can be so stressful depending on the priorities and expectations of the bride in this whole wedding industrial complex landscape. Love this video!

Wow I never realized how misogynistic “chick flicks” was. Why is out labeled when it’s for women ? Why can’t people just equally enjoy stories ? WE DO NEED TO EVOLVE…🙄

Yup, it all flies under the radar until you really think about it…

Why, what's it really harming though? Are people not watching it, are certain movies still not acclaimed? Why change the term chick flick, what is it hurting? Is it going to ruin your day, or your enjoyment of the movie? The only reason why this is a problem is because you've made it a problem. It's a word, that you probably barely use or barely even hear, it's a problem because someone just told you it's a problem. I bet you haven't even though of it until now months after this review.

Idk maybe the fact that any movie that has a majorly female cast gets labeled “chick flick” instead of being put in proper movie genres and categories - doesn’t matter whether it’s a drama, a romantic film, an action or a raunchy comedy like bridesmaids. As soon as it has mostly leading women it’s all lumped into one.

@vhstape I probably wouldn’t waste my time arguing with this person because they clearly don’t get it or are probably one of those people who have such an issue with “woke” culture that they’re on the defensive about everything now. I get it… chick flick is reductive and not very informative of what you’re getting into! Great video by the way !! 🥰

@@TheVhsTapeYT It honestly doesn't matter. It's just people like yourself making it matter. Where's the category for best female actress in a comedy chick flick, where's best female actress for a drama chick flick? So what is Merly Streep, the top nominated female of chick flicks because I thought it was for movies. You're making something again out of nothing. The last time I honestly heard ANYONE in my group of family and friends call a female led movie a chick flick was late 90s early 2000s. Also the last time I even recall the word being used and it was in a movie. So perhaps that's where your theory should be, on this topic in the past.

As much as Bridesmaids was really not my kind of movie your review wants me to give it another go. I did really like the emotional impact it had, but most of the humor (back when I watched it years ago) was really not my thing. But to be fair I always remembered the bridal shop fiasco, because it was so much advertised as if it was a good selling point, which at least for me had the opposite effect and the reason I watched it way later. The general analysis about studios taking the wrong notes in what makes a movie good is something I can wholeheartedly agree on. Especially how everybody instantly blames the fact that they are female led for it, not that they were badly written. Not just in movies, but books, especially book adaptations, video games, podcasts everything. If it has anything so called "woke" about it and is bad it's getting blamed on that instead of the writing itself. One of the biggest times I've seen this phenomenons with was with Star Wars for sure. The Star Wars franchise always had very strong female characters (way less than male, but well written) but with the sequels critically failing for a lot of people it was hugely blamed on Daisy Ridley herself why people didn't like it. As if she wrote the scripts or that there were no writing issues with other characters, but the male white cast and characters was rarely blamed for what writing had in store for them. My only complaint about your video is that I am now aware that there is a gender swapped American Pie. I was already over this bs when the gender swapped Overboard came out.

I'm a man and all my favorite comedies r female-starred (Mean Girls, Easy A, Sex And The City) and i love co-ed sitcoms like The Office, Friends, New Girl mostly because my favorites characters r females. For me there is something subtle, realistic but at the same time chaotic about the comedic delivery from female characters in comedies while guys just do over-the-top things that do usually seem not equally smart and well-written

You make Bridesmaids sound a lot better than it was (for me) lol. The "Female Hangover" thing was 100% because of the way Melissa McCarthy's character was written, IMO.
