Terribly underrated as an album, among my top 3 albums of theirs.

I totally agree with you about "Stomp" because the Bass Solo caught my ears as a 10 year old child. I never heard anything like it in my life. It had inadvertantely put me on the path to becoming a human beatboxer. I owe that to the legendary and true "Thunderthumbs". RIP Louis!!!!

I love this song from the Winners album, another song from that album that is another favorite from that album is "I Want You" That song was so underrated! I wish I could find a live version of that song. The guitar solo and that song is absolutely phenomenal. I taught myself to play it when I was a teenager lol. These guys were my whole childhood. My dad didn’t like me playing bass because I was a young lady, and my mom didn’t want me having rough looking hands lol 😂so I had to use cocoa butter a lot. 🙄

I listened to the entire album again, about ten years ago, after it was first released in 1981-when I first bought it(in 1981) I said 'it's not that good of an album'; I definitely liked certain cuts more than others at that time, but after all of the years going by and then listening to it again, I then said, 'this was really a nice album, well produced-maybe their best'-not in terms of any one song or any no. of tunes that could've been singles, but in the collective sense, every song on the album had 'something to say', perhaps more so than any album they did before! And I agree with you, "1980Triumph" if I understand you correctly when you say, the reason the album didn't do as well as any of the previous albums is because QJ was not their producer on this one; I think a lot of people had that same conclusion after finding the album didn't sell as well as the previous ones. I will note that it(the album) did get quite a bit of airplay when it was first released, at least in my hometown of Detroit it did; maybe the same was true for most other markets, where the album would've received quite a bit of airplay, like it got in Detroit-maybe in spite of the airplay, it didn't do well, because of, like you said, lack of 'name recognition', w/respect to Quincy's name not being on the lp. Oh well, it's history now but it's nice to see someone remembered this lp! P.S: I think I like this live version better than the album version-they're jamming on this video! 12-13-24.

It seems that the reason given from what I read was that the album wasn't successful because it didn't have Quincy on it, it is suggested that had he produced it then the album would have marketed it better or promoted it more. I can't confirm but that is what I had read years ago. I think we all have revisited albums and had that feeling, for me it is certain songs that I ignored or didn't capture me at first yet became some of my all time favorites. "Can't Let Go" by Earth Wind and Fire comes to mind. I'm glad to know it got airplay, always amazing that an album somehow doesn't stick with audiences for various reasons. I have not been a fan of their work really after this, only one song off the next album/compilation in 82. I really like The Great Awakening and the Gospel album Louis made.

@@1980Triumph Like you said, their albums after "Winners" didn't get the airplay of the previous ones, and I think that may have been due to the lack of direction, or input, w/respect to those albums, compared to the previous lps. And like you said, Quincy's lack of presence as producer on the Winners album may have, or did indeed, contribute to it's lack of success, compared to it's predecessors-and thanks for your reply! 1-2-25.

This was shot at the A&M sound stage in June of 1978 for a charity event that I believe was produced by Quinncy Jones. I had just finished a tour of the US with Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio. The Bros Jos performed and were just fucking awesome! I had never seen them before. I would love a piece of that show if anyone out there has the whole thing. It was a very memerable day. I would love to have the perfromance of Raydio. Please reply. Thank you so much.

@thebionicbassplayer6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Winners did have one bass solo on a song called "Dancing Free", but you have a point, Louis bass playing should have been showcased more...
@PearsonJd26 жыл бұрын
I agree totally, the album was good but not great because for whatever reason Louis bass playing was toned down,especially odd considering George and Louis Johnson produced the album. Without Quincy Jones on production though A&M barely promoted the album and basically left them high and dry. A platinum selling group who's label just gives up on ridiculous.

Are you Kidding..., White Folks in those days were not into R&B. They called it "Jungle Music". There were a lot of Great Rock Groups that they would follow. There were only a select few White folks as R&B followers. Today I believe that would not be the case. But in the Hood........, we loved the 'Brotha's'!!! They were a bit clean and commercial...., but gave then Love just the same!!!
