What is it like to be a Buddhist monk in Thailand? What is it like to live a minimalist lifestyle? To some people, this life can be seen as boring or "not fun". In this video, I wanted to take the time to share my experience and why we make the choice to choose this kind of lifestyle. Are there any benefits to living as a Buddhist monk? That's the question I wanted to answer. The Buddhist monk life is simple but definitely not easy. Having lived as a monk for two years in Thailand, I hope to give you some insight into our world :) Enjoy! #monk #monks #monklife #minimalism

Would you consider this monk lifestyle "interesting" or boring?
@Seyva209
@Seyva209 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, because it actually takes us to another mindset of a state where we felt enlightened, joyful, cherish, and why it’s interesting? Because we need a monk to help us with depression, sickness/illnesses or suffering..monks are very peaceful men’s and woman’s who wants a best moment of their life to be honest. It isn’t boring..but for those who said it was boring, well their life seem much suffering..experience what’s beyond the nature itself.

Monk life is actually interesting. Contentment, inner Peace and genuine Happiness is something monks have that we as lay people don't. Yes, maybe temporarily 🤔 for us. I want to practice minimalism and start meditating more. I'm trying ..... really! Thank you Nick for sharing such wonderful and enlightening content everytime. Stay safe.

I think your monk life only looks boring when seen from a mindset that is still pursuing outward things to find happiness. That dependency might color a monk's life boring. To me it looks very interesting.

My life during a pandemic: Daily meditation, simple meals at home, walks around the neighborhood, wearing the same outfit every day since I no longer go to work or attend social events, making handicrafts at home, listening to dharma talks, watching Nick Keomahavong videos. Sounds like a monk’s life huh? Took some getting used to but am now very content. Definitely not bored! ❤️

@Buddho Buddho It’s never to late to start as long as you have a strong intention to follow this path. The soul never dies; no birth, no death. Only the physical body is left behind. Thus, reincarnation and the cycle of samsara. The dharma seed has been planted inside of you 🌱. In due time with the right conditions, your intention of becoming a monk will come to fruition, either in this lifetime or in future reincarnations 📿. Keep the faith, learn the dharma, join a sangha, practice generosity, dana and compassion. There is a Buddha within all of us (“Buddha nature”). 🙏

Even if you can’t follow a strict monk life, that doesn’t mean you can’t practice these same traditions every day. You’re never too old to sit down in a comfortable chair and close your eyes!! Meditation is something that everyone can learn! Only 10 minutes each day does actually make a difference. After a week, increase to 15 minutes, then 20, then 30, and so on.

I think life is actually boring that’s why we need all this stimulation/ entertainment to escape to, such as movies, music, etc. Monk lifestyle is to embrace that boredom instead of escaping it and as you say just watch things, rise and pass. It’s actually a hardwork.. for strong people.. Thank you for another peaceful video Ven. Nick 🙏🏼

It's the same for the life of a spiritualist, I often refer to our lives as Monks, it's all about the internal spiritual life, being present in the moment, not looking for external distractions. I love my simple, mundane life.

Very nicely elaborated . Boring ???? When we don't get satisfaction & happiness through our senses , the term boring manifest. Our senses need constant gratification otherwise , we feel restless, useless, hopeless & distressed. Monk who is trying to live his life above the concept of "boring" is really brave & courageous..Here requires strength of mind. When The person wins the mind , boring is nowhere . Boring is the shadow of poverty of our mind. The term boring exists when we all are always roaming around our senses & it's immediate gratification.. If we can't gratify , we get bored . Monk who realises the impermanent nature of all these feelings & gratification so he is above all of this concept . Where the mind & life is stable ,boring ceases.

Nick, yes. Thank you. By desiring nothing we can have everything. In my heart I know it's true. I try to live simply, but I am a teacher in America where it seems like everyone is in a hurry and has an agenda. There is this feeling that people have that whereever you are is not where you are suppossed to be. It is a fear based society that promotes anxiety and selfishness. I love teaching, but in my heart I am so sad because I am not able to clear and clean my mind like you speak of so beautifully. Thank you, brother. Thanks for the blessing.

I remember watching a video you did way back in front of the Hollywood sign, surrounded by noisy cars and planes. And now to see you here in that peaceful environment, really is a reflection of the change that you've gone through inside as well. It's beautiful to see. Kudos to you for having the discipline to go down this path and not get distracted. Intellectually, I understand what you're saying in this video but for me it's so hard to walk away from the idea of loving and settling down with a woman. I understand it has highs and lows like you mentioned, but for some reason, I can't seem to let it go. I would love to hear what you have to say specifically about how to walk away from romantic love. In any case, thank you so much for your videos! They keep me disciplined in my struggle with following the middle path.

The monk lifestyle has interested me for many years. You are so right LP Nick about the perspectives of boring and happiness. I noticed some ex-monks who had disrobed and returned to their lay person lives struggled when they tried to lead their life retaining the mindset of a monk - me included. I also had the privilege to coach some monks, who has been ordained for 3-5 years. They still struggled to let go of their lay-person's perspectives, like unfairness of duties assignments or demotivated by lack of direction in their monk's path - still thinking of a career path. Which ever side we are on, boredom and happiness arise (monk or lay-life) - there is no perfect life until Nibbana/Nirvana. LP Nick message reminded me that the key to happiness is to change in mindsets and to resist comparing. Recently, someone told me I should not slurp when eating Ramen noodles as its not "Monk-like" (on my KZbin channel). I said, "But I am not a monk anymore. If I act like a monk friends think I am aloof." When I was a monk, one of the brother monk, who was a profession in management, took control of the organisation of an event, overriding the directions given by a mentor monk. I told him later quietly, "You are not a professor anymore. Let them manage it. Let it go." When you are a monk, be a good monk. When you are a lay person, be a good layperson. We all can do good deeds in different capacity, and find "fun" stuff to do differently. The common thread that stitch my Monk's training into my lay-life is... (just my personal view) ... to practice love, empathy, compassion and equanimity. I have not perfected it... still trying hard to walk on that razor's edge.

That's at the heart of it ultimately: never satisfied and we seek to remove that. The eye can't see enough and the ear can't hear enough.

You are absolutely awesome. Im kind of new to your channel and I like the fact that you've known the materialistic world enough then join as a Monk. This make you more real and able to give an insight of both worlds. You are correct for the half-way peace. It avoids peaks and valleys! Bravo!

Wonderful explanation to boredom and to joys that monks gets from the middle way :) It’s all in our mind … what’s boring for some might be fun for others. For monks their life seems happy and fun and contented! Well said Ven Nick ❤️ Sadhu sadhu 🙏🏽 Namaste from USA …

To a monk, it can never be boring. To a lay man, it may seems boring. For me, I like layman's life but I can learn alot from your sharing and applying those tips and advice to my life. Its applying the best of both worlds to my life. Keep sharing Ven Nick. Really appreciate your insights about a Buddhist monk's way of life. Thank you very much for your sharing.

I'm going to join the program once ive paid off my student debts, ive been unsure about it for years, but i guess i just have to go to Thailand and seek the same peaceful simplicity you have. I have no ilusions of the monk lifestyle being easy. But simple and easy arent the same I guess. Thank you for sharing a piece of your acuired wisdom, and I hope to meet you one day.

Sabaidee Phra Ajan Nick🙏🏼today is sin yai, and I was chanting with Luangtha Ma through KZbin. I feel so relaxed every time I do so, chanting and meditating. Is this my calling? I could literally block out the outsiders and tune in dharma. Family and friends think it’s boring, but I enjoy it ! Saatu Saaatu Saaatu from Texas, USA. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐

Boring? Not at all. It sounds heavenly. When covid hit us all and we were under lockdown, I felt at ease to a certain degree. I no longer had to “be somewhere, go here and there, obligations were put on pause. I was fortunate enough to see my adult children and grandkids as well as my husband, but I found myself doing more for me . The catchphrase at the time was PPE. Personal protective equipment. MY PPE was paint, pray and exercise all of which I did daily and you know how habits form…well here we are in Sept 2021 and I’m still practicing my PPE’s !! I have a yoga teacher who takes 1 day every month for a day of silence. That doesn’t sound too bad considering all the negativity we hear daily. I stopped watching mainstream news and do spend less time “doing and going ! I find your videos informative and they put my mind at peace. Thank you for all you give Nick. Blessings

The life of a renunciate, Samana, has had a major attraction for me for the last couple of years since graduating college with a degree in the academic study of religion. I discovered Buddhism in high school upon reading Siddhartha and What the Buddha Taught, and it all felt so intuitive and right. I have no sangha and am striving to live a bit of an ascetic life out of personal choice. Being in a community would undoubtedly make this easier as I find myself constantly pulled away by distraction, time-wasters, and gorging on information. I live with my family and have no urgent need to find employment and housing, so could easily spend most of my time in dhamma study meditation practice, and my minimal family obligations, but am distracted from it much of the time.
