ceramic is lighter & its better at absorbing & dispersing the bullet’s energy, with steel plates theres a higher chance of breaking something since its straight up steel to steel & depending on the caliber, bullet going to hit the plate like a truck !! although steel is more affordable, it isnt the best

For the anti-steel comments, your opinion is valid but not always correct. Yes. Steel has issues with shrapnel and spalling but GOOD steel plates have coats that contain shrapnel from bullet impacts like how a Ceramic would. Steel works and was used by the military for a long time, you just need to go with a trusted manufacturer and do your research. Not all armor plates are made equal, just like ceramic. Just like Kevlar.
@tylerkinley2682 ай бұрын
Right? There's plenty of tests by numerous different channels showing that a quality plate manufacturer will make a quality anti spall coating.
@BUZZKILLJRJR7 ай бұрын
If you're going to wear metal plates then you need to wear protection for your chin and neck. they make neck protection for spalling so get it. And if that's the case I would also get something for the inside of your arms it's a metal plate it can take way more rounds then ceramic but there's also more gear involved for Spauling, probably not enough to weigh enough to make a big difference in your kit, but it's just something you have to take into consideration. they have small plate sleeves you can get now to catch the spalling as well, all kinds of stuff today, you just got to make sure you get the appropriate stuff for the Armor you're getting. Good luck boys and god bless America.

Cheap ammo by companies like TulAmmo, Red Army Standard and Wolf use what's called a Bi-Metal jacket. Its a mild steel jacket with a thin coat of copper over it. It's cheaper than full copper jackets despite the extra extrusion process in manufacturing because it reduces the amount of Copper (a relatively expensive metal) needed to make Billions of rounds

For anyone here thinking of getting plates, do not get steel. Compared to ceramic or PE, they are extremely heavy and after wearing it for about an hour of clearing the basement, you'll be ready to take your kit off and rest. If you've already bought them, they're great for a weighted jogging vest or as targets 😅

They make anti spalling bags to put the plate is that help more with the spalling. I think for the vast majority of people just wanting to exercise their rights, steel is fine. Especially if they get a plate with good coating and a spall bag. Plus must steel plates will continue to eat rounds from its threat level pretty much indefinitely through after a few shots ull have a lot of copper and lead flying around.
@vicerichter11635 ай бұрын
Problem with steel is that its not boyant, its heavy, and poses a risk to spalling. Unless you have a quality plate carrier with thicker padding and also that you put a spalling blanket over it. Its still not guaranteed and also its bulky and heavy when press out your plate carrier vest and you cant shoulder up your rifle effectively. Some food for thought

Anyone who says steel plates cause “spalling” have no clue to what they are speaking on. “Bullet splash” is what happens against steel, which is easy contained using frag mitigation coating to capture any bullet fragments. You can also slide the plate in a splash cover to double up the splash containment. I would say if you are going to get plates, understand who you are and what theatre of war you will be dealing with, that you’d even need to consider a plate carrier to begin with.

I know its the gold standard to use lvl3-lvl3a+ plates for police. But lvl 4 and above is the true standard for duty use; provided if you're a swat guy. Which he isnt. Not hard to tell. But hey do you. Lvl 4 and lvl4+ is not hard to get and not very many companies make armor to stop 50 bmg. Dayton armour is one of the few companies Iam aware of that makes a plate for anti-material.

Checkout the Tacticon Armament plates. Ive never seen steel plates absorb as much spawling as theirs. Pretty crazy. Also if youre still concerned they are super good for training. That way when you have ceramics, feels like youre not waring anything at all.

In my opinion I’d still buy steel. Yea ceramic is lighter and dissipates energy better but if you need that plate 7 years from now, can you trust it? It can delaminate and other stuff that steel won’t do. Those ar500 steel plates have a shelf life of 20 years and I guarantee you it’ll last 5x that. If you don’t want to spend big money on ceramic, just get steel. Odds are you’ll never use it anyway.

Not really beneficial. It adds too much weight and hinders mobility. Your vitals are sonething that if it gets shot, you are likely to die without immediate care. Your shoulders, knees, arms, legs, all of those are important, but not as important as the stuff between the plates. You also have time to act on those injuries of you take a hit to them. Only protectipn outside of a plate carrier i would recommend is a ballistic helmet, and knee pads. Maybe elbow pads if youre going to be dolphin diving alot like in call of duty.

If the steel plate has a good coating the spall from the first few rounds won’t be a problem. But anytime a plate takes a round, whether is steel, ceramic or composite, it has been weakened and compromised. With coated steel that means in crease risk of spall, with ceramic and composite that means increased risk of penetration. I run composite but if steel is all you got it is better than nothing.
