I grew up playing the original Marathon games and reading the terminals. I know what this guy is talking about. Marathon and Halo Bungie had a very special sense of story that is as much about what is in front of you as a player as it is about the history, cosmos, mystery, and abstract horrors hinted at beyond the player's perspective. This is art, and art loses to commerce eventually.

Ideally, when leadership catastrophically fails that hard, they should be the ones to take the harsh feedback and willingly too. Instead, they are protected class which is sheltered from consequence and criticism. When they leave the ruins of all they've destroyed they get handed a new executive position somewhere else while those under them suffer the most. It's bullshit and everyone knows it. Some good music here or there, some good ideas, but really we should have seen a Halo 3 addon. I never cared for Reach like most people did. My fanfare ended at Halo 3, and Reach should have just been DLC for Halo 3 or they could have remastered 1-3 and had Reach as Halo 1 DLC or something along those lines…

Bungie did a lot of justice to this topic all the way to Halo Reach. With the passing of each game getting there, you can see each installment getting better and better in the regard of improving the military setting. After Reach, they threw the military setting to the trash.

Fair point. But it’s kind of interesting to view it as a reflection of how actual real world militarist propaganda portrays the idealized soldier as near super heroic figures. If Halo Studios does any kind of reboot, they have to make sure they don't repeat the exact same mistakes they keep on making with 4, 5, and now Infinite. Thse mistakes include: 1. Requiring outside lore material to fully understand or enjoy the main campaign (save the stuff that only hardcore lore fans would enjoy for campaign DLC instead of jamming it into the campaign) 2. Starting a plotline or story arc that ends on a cliffhanger in the campaign, then having it unsatisfyingly resolved or thrown out in a book or offscreen 3. Overly focusing the story around character drama and emotions instead of the plot
@Turututu-T2 ай бұрын
I agree with everything. I would also add that the story shouldn’t depend SO MUCH on Halsey. Seriously, I know she’s important to the Halo universe, but Halo 4, Halo 5, and Infinite rely on her for practically everything. I really prefer discussing this topic here instead of on the Halo or HaloStory subreddit. Honestly, I was heavily criticized there.
@Will_Forge2 ай бұрын
4. They also shifted the genre of the storytelling by changing how the story is portrayed in almost every way. Writing, cinematography, plot, and even the gameplay to an extent. They need to be sure to convey a sci-fi war film genre rather than a sci-fi super hero drama. Halo is a war film, not an action movie. Those are different genres that handle the action and drama in very different ways. You can compare the usual mentions like Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan and compare them to the Marvel movies as an example of the problem. MC is the cavalry in a war film so he feels like a super hero, but he's a hero among soldiers in a war film rather than a super hero. He's not a super hero character but rather is a super soldier character. Similar by drastically different writing involved in both.
@Will_Forge2 ай бұрын
@@Turututu-T to the end of what I just said, Halsey in Reach was great because she was treated as a genius civilian among the command structure in a military at war. In Halo 4/5 she was written a super genius akin to Tony Stark except she's been taken prisoner and then being interrogated. She wasn't even put on trial, but rather put in a dark room to be yelled at for heavy handed exposition. A court scene would have been even worse, don't get me wrong, but that setting for her interrogation was so far out of genre. It added to the issue.

Fellow game dev here chasing after MechAssault. I just want to say this is probably my favourite video to ever release on this channel and I'm only 14 minutes in! Based on what I've seen so far Hardy really embodies the attitude that made the world's best games. I believe in the principles he's bringing to the table here, just the way he talks about it I can tell he's deeply passionate and cares about where Halo ended up. I've seen developers take a lot of BS from their communities over the years, many times undeserved, and many times where the feedback is based in critisism of a specific feature or mechanic and causes members of a team to shut down instead of addressing the problem and reaching that next level of quality. What I see here is a man with thick skin from an era where devs were their own biggest critics. During the 6th and 7th gen, we were honest with ourselves when games weren't fun. People have the right to run their teams however they like, but I can tell. This is the mentality of someone who still has some great games left in him. The way he approches the topic aggressively shows the fire still burns. I wish I had the chance to chat him up about design philosophy. I feel like there's a lot he could teach me haha. Edit: just wanted to add, I never really cared for the Nolan Batman movies either. But I would take it a step further and say I also never cared for Ledger's Joker. @jimmuthedeath12152 ай бұрын
I don’t think the grappling hook at all impeded my need to pilot a vehicle. Vehicles were still amazing in a fight or for traveling long distances. Especially the flying ones. The grappling hook only helped me in my immediate situation like fleeing for cover or gaining higher ground. It helped a lot with in-door environments or battlefields with heavy terrain. It was also useful for getting things that were almost within reach like fuel containers. The only time I used it for gaining distance was when there wasn’t any vehicle around, but if I stumbled across a vehicle I’d commandeer it for the speed and on-board weapons. I thought it was a really good quality of life change for a Halo game (my first Halo was Halo 2 on the Xbox First Gen). It offered more movement and control to fights, as well as somewhat made them more dynamic. Hot take but I’d rather have the grappling hook than sprint. Tbh I just liked the movement in Infinite the best. Being able to jump up and pull myself up onto ledges is stuff I’ve been wishing to have as a feature since the beginning. Although I will say idk how to feel about the Grapple being in Multiplayer, but when you play Campaign using it is almost entirely optional. You can switch to the other special attacks if you like with 1 or 2 or 3, or just not press Q. (This time since it was on PC I played it there).

Hardy is completely correct. Halo should be rebooted. The key insights he has are these: 1) The halo universe we now have will never be as beautiful and coherent as many possible versions we might imagine. Too much from too many different minds are there. It’s a “dish” made by people “cooking” profoundly different, and discordant, “cuisines.” Not a one of us can be as satisfied as we might otherwise be with such a mess of feelings and ideas. Any more beautiful version of Halo must begin, at least partially, anew. (I’m actually happy to start with canon after the release of Halo: Reach or after Halo 3). 2) Coherence in a creative product depends either on a singular mind, a stable group of minds in concert with one another, or by groups communicating across time by means of precisely articulation (mathematical-logic, science). Halo, not yet being precisely articulable quite like mathematically precise scientific theories, would then need to be created by one or more minds who have developed a (an evolving) creative process. This is exactly what we see with other IPs… The Halo many of us loved, myself included, died when the original creative group finally fell apart. Roughly with Halo: Reach. It is no accident that even when it’s been good since then, it has never been the same enough to pass as Halo as we individually and collectively knew it to be. I want a proper reboot. No one can take Bungie’s Halo away…I already differentiate between it and everything 343 has done to the universe anyway. Hidden Experia’s philosophy of creativity just isn’t very sophisticated…and that’s okay. But it seems to me that he’s indeed wrong about what can or should be done. Even about everything already done being “erased;” that’s just not true. Anyone could create a project and decide “this is continuous with Bungie+343 Halo;” it’s that simple.
@Finger1122 ай бұрын
But he did talk about the project failure on holding on things with too much baggage that he tried to save everything, but it didn't work out. Halo has alot of that now...

The worst offense by 343 Industries is how they ignored the Covenant being dissolved. Suddenly the Elites were just back in a Covenant that wasn't supposed to exist anymore. All of the Elites were supposed to be on our side now, or at least not taking part in the war. There was never supposed to be a Covenant anymore. Banished maybe, or some sort of brute faction, but Elites were not supposed to be in it. Why on earth would they still be helping the brutes? They have no idea what they are doing with Halo and it should be taken away from them.
@kalebeatsfloordboards98662 ай бұрын
I don't think you know what 343 did bc they didn't ignore the Covenant dissolving. The Covenant Remnants are entirely 343s design, and we fight them throughout halo 4 and 5. As for the Sangheili, in lore, they're experiencing a lot of social division. Only a significant portion of Sangheili are allies with Humans, many of them still resent Humans.

After watching every behind the scenes, dev commentary, critiques, and anything else discussing Halo, I don't think anyone truly knows what Halo is. It can't be put into any category comfortably. Space opera, military focus, sci-fi drama, whatever. The minds that went into making Halo were all so unique and all the creators had their own reasons/beliefs for contributing what they did. No reboot could ever really capture what the originals were.

If only we could see all of the old team return together to create the classic halo stories we love. A man can dream. I think if they did it would be legendary. Based boomer. He’s 100% right. Halo was the brainchild of a group of specific artists with a specific vision. You can’t continue that vision without the artists. Halo as we knew it is ALREADY over. I can understand not wanting to let go of the lore, but the canon itself is what’s hindering the franchise to continue to persist. The after story that 343 is telling, while trying to redo the past, is just dull, retconny and restrictive. Could some genius have pulled the continuation off? Maybe. But it’s too late now. I don’t even think retconning 343 Halos and starting from 3 is a good idea. If the show must go on, and the original artists can’t come back, start from scratch. The current state of Halo is as a zombie, and there is more to be found there with the right people. My only concern would be that if the franchise could ever find those people, but I don’t have a doubt that they exist.
@thecynicaloptimist18842 ай бұрын
I'm fully with Hardy on this. Reboot the series and do a fresh take on the story & the universe. A reboot doesn't "erase" anything (did the Nolan Batman movies erase the Burton ones? Did the Reeves one erase the Nolan ones? No). As Leonard Nimoy said "canon is only important to certain people because they have to cling to their knowledge of the minutiae". I feel like Halo is, in part, being suffocated by the same problem that's hamstringing virtually every major franchise, whether gaming, movies, or TV, which is the paradoxical "give us something different, but give us the same thing we've seen before". I do sympathise with Luc's point of view too though, that you can tell good stories in the pre-existing universe, but to be honest Halo's canon is just such a self-contradictory clusterfuck at this point that it makes more sense to reboot it and tell a story that isn't being dragged down by the looming shadow of 343's enormous meddling, and even Bungie's misfires to a much lesser extent. Also, before people say "well the Halo TV series was a reboot and look how that turned out" - the Halo TV series didn't suck because it was a reboot of the story. It sucked because it was poorly written.

The people who built halo moved on to other projects where they didn't want to work on halo and the people who took over didn't know what made halo special. I don't agree with everything he said, but I can agree that a total reboot with a different vision would be better than expanding the existing material. At one point it has to end (like The Walking Dead) and it's okay. @InnuendoXP2 ай бұрын
Ok here's my case for a reboot. Think of all the concessions of scope, gameplay and storytelling the Bungie games suffered because of working with the technical limitations of the Original Xbox & lessons they hadn't learned yet. How much smaller the story & world had to be. Remember how Halo CE was supposed to be 40 levels? Imagine getting more hub-world levels like Silent Cartographer or Halo but exploring different corners of the ring all over in tons of different biomes and seeing the whole world actually transform with the flood outbreak. Imagine making other levels less linear with secret shortcuts & more hidden powerups by doing some solid exploring or trick jumps. Expanding the biomes with wildlife & natural environments. Expanding the roster of enemy & neutral faction entities. More night missions, expanded stealth mechanics. Remember the original scope of Halo 2? How it was designed with Doom3 style lighting in mind - have the flood outbreak be a horror show with a dramatic play of light and shadow. The warthog run to board the keyship. Gameplay on board the keyship! The war on Earth! Expanded city environments, more Earth biomes & sites - the Ark being on Earth as originally intended ANCIENT HUMANS STILL BEING FORERUNNER!!! - de-retcon that change which just sucked so much of the cosmic gravity out of the narrative. The themes of sin, legacy, inheritance, duty .etc What he says about James Bond is exactly right. Look how brilliantly DOOM has done with its reboot (that yes wound up making it ALL canon, multiverse-style). How it took modern mechanics from eg. The Metroid Prime series - but only because it suited & improved the experience - not to chase trends. Halo's original trilogy had a ton of unrealised potential and ideas that are ripe for a do-over IMO. It's less about whether it's a good idea or not as it's about whether Halo Studios could pull it off. Personally, I'd like to let iD have a crack if HS don't work out with the CE remake.

I think the biggest issue 343/HALO Studios has is they're trying to continue a story with a completely different creative DNA than it was first envisioned. By that I mean everything from the vision, thought processes, inspiration and direction etc. You see this with a lot of franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars for example. When Disney made the spin-off movies and shows, they were generally well received but as soon as they tried to continue the Skywalker saga, well we know how many people felt about that. Basically what I'm saying is the Chief's story should be put to rest so they can focus on other stories within the Halo universe.

I have to agree with the concept of a reboot. I was opposed to it at first, but the point he makes using Batman as a comparison immediately broadened my perspective. Sure, maybe the reboot may not be lauded as much as the old games, but at least a reboot wouldn’t canonically shit all over the original trilogy like the 343 sequels did, given that a ‘reboot’ would imply a disconnect from the previous universe. It’s also a great launchpad for new players. A reboot could invigorate a swath of new fans to check out the old games for the first time, strengthening interest in both universes simultaneously.

I would absolutely love a Halo reboot with a gritty, military sci-fi theme. Mature rating, make Spartans walking tanks again, make the Covenant absolutely terrifying. Story should start with Master Chief on Reach, fighting the Covenant in one of its cities. Imagine operating with a small squad of Marines and Sgt. Johnson in a downtown setting. Banshees flying between skyscrapers picking off civilians, avoiding Brute patrol units. We get to see the true horror of the covenant invasion in a familiar, grounded environment. Then, of course, you get on the Pillar of Autumn and experience a whole new take on Halo CE. Lean into Flood horror, make Truth and Reconciliation a better infiltration mission, make Assault on the Control Room feel more like an actual military assault. So much potential
