Magnus sending himself and a measure of his people across the warp to a new planet. "This was perhaps the greatest psychic feat" Malcador orbiting Titan, about to send it and it's population into a pocket universe for centuries : "hold my staff"

Malcador's feat of banishing the moon Titan to the Warp is impressive but it is objectively more impressive that Magnus pulled all those civilians and Astartes into the warp only to bring them back out, intact at a target destination across the galaxy along with his library. Malcador basically hurled a boulder into the ocean whereas Magnus dragged a bus full of people into the tide, across the ocean, and back out to an island where they were all safe.

What a series.. It had never crossed my mind that the burning of prospero would be such an intense, apocalyptic, horrifying yet depressing part of the heresy lore. I genuinely feel kind of sad for the sheer scope of how the thousand sons were hilariously, monumentaly fucked. Watching your world and its citizens burned and butchered seemingly out of nowhere, their otherwise all-knowing primarch with no explanation or resolve and to witness your brother astartes lose themselves to madness or even worse, horrifying/ incomprehensible fates. Damn.

Despite being a fan of the First, and it being more likely The Lion wakes up next; I can't help but wonder at Russ's reaction to 40K most. He undergoes so much change and stimuli to totally change his outlook. He picked so many fights, swaggered about with a self-certainty but has this brilliant calculating layer beneath. It would be nice to see him *not* be led by the nose or an idiot, because logically he should be more Odin than Thor. Plays games with Malcador, swears an oath with Lion and Dorn, traveled to the Underverse and understands his true nature. Great work on this series. I'm guessing you have similar plans with Calth? It's interesting to see comments on this event as well, because let's be honest *both* Russ and Magnus were arrogant to the bone, it was practically their wyrd/doom to be led by the nose because of their exceptionalism, taking their faith and loyalty to higher ideals into accidentally downplaying the intelligence or will of others, it was not enough to be demigods but they each needed to ignore other brothers and other wise and powerful beings like Valdor. Magnus never saw the merit or intelligence of others, just as Russ never saw a will or force with merit in comparison to his own. Fabius Bile has a great musing that the tragedy of Prospero is nothing to do with people, but that Magnus let the great libraries burn. But that's the beauty of it. Prospero is a disaster in a dozen ways beyond the apparent and it echoes out across the galaxy. Nearly corrupts the White Scars, Luther uses it while giving a succession speech, Abbadon uses it to make Khayon his sorcerer, it's a beautiful tragedy.
@BioroidPilot2 жыл бұрын
I dont really fully agree with that take on Magnus, he strikes me as the he hears the intellect of others but he doesn't take matters just cause he is told to. Magnus wants to know why he should follow a order that makes no sense. Russ follows a order that makes no sense. They both play into this. Magnus was never told WHY he should stop by Big E, only the ignorant lies version which of course he rejected, all available info made rejecting that the only logical course. If Big E had just post Nikia took Magnus to a private chamber and explained chaos and the like to him then he had the patience and likely would have waited. But Big E is more like what you say, cannot see others as being trustworthy or intelligent enough to truly confide in. But that lack of trust is what makes corrupting Horus even possible. As for Russ? he is loyal to a literal fault, to the point that it is actually a bad thing, he got a order that was extreme, the got a new version of the order which was more extreme and made no sense. A good leader would have said "Wait..something is wrong here" and would have gone back to the Emperor to confirm the order change since it made no sense. Had he done that Horus's entire gambit would have fallen apart, but he is foolhardy in his loyalty and just acts when he should question. The true tragedy? Big E wanted his sons to obey without question, and in wanting that he caused the destruction of the webway project since what Magnus saw and needed to convey made perfect sense to defy the rules over. And he got what he wanted in Russ, a son so Loyal he will obey even a order that makes no sense...and in doing that the fool made Magnus a traitor despite him having been loyal, and caused a huge amount of losses that gave Horus a huge advantage. To me this tragedy is not Magnus being arrogant. But rather a example of how foolish Big E was in his approach of not trusting anyone but himself and Malcador. He sowed the seeds of nearly all his son's betrayals. Not saving Angron's people. Denying any glory and chance to built to Perterabo. Mishandling the council of Nikea and thus leaving Magnus ignorant of what he desperately needed to know. The list goes one. In nearly all the cases it is a instance of his fuck up leading to losing loyalty of others.
@thewayfarer88492 жыл бұрын
@@BioroidPilot I think that Magnus thought about other opinions equally as little as Russ. I see where you're coming from with the idea of questioning, but it's not even a question in Magnus' mind. Magnus never intended to follow the Edict, I doubt there was even a moment (and not one that shows up in writing) of him doing anything other than wanting to prove his merit. He was smarter, he would make his father understand by warning him and his cabals continued believing in their superior wisdom. It's arrogance to use the Allegory of the Cave and change the ending, to assume an intelligence and righteousness above your brothers and father. I'm not saying it's not merited, or that the Emperor couldn't have explained better. But frankly; he is the king and father of the Imperium. Magnus was created by him and swore to serve, and he considered as much as Lorgar did at Monarchia what the Emperor was saying. When you are warned, by the greatest psyker who ever lived in a proclamation you assumed was a direct trial of yourself (a little arrogant too, Nikea wasn't just about Magnus at all) that power corrupts and it's a living force, when you *know* you sacrificed your eye to a being you do not fully comprehend, and you claim to value the merit of wisdom and even restraint (in a great short story Magnus forbids a Fellowship studying deamonology) but not listen then you are arrogant. Arrogance is arguably the core trait of Magnus aside from his intelligence, like it is the Emperor and all the Primarchs. It's just that it's clearer in-story for him because his justified pride and his admirable power and wisdom led him to such an end. If he listened to Sanguinius and the Khan, or Ahriman, or Kalikamatus(?), or Lorgar and Perturabo (who may well have mentioned something quietly) he could have avoided a great deal. The Emperor not trusting his sons is an interesting debate, because from another view; in those cases wasn't it more a case of setting himself up by trusting his sons? He trusted his genius demigod creations not to turn on him. Angron excellent point, indisputable it's his fault. But Perturabo swore himself happily to the Emperor, and being told he was needed, being told he was indisputable and the Lord of Iron wasn't enough. He needed buttering up, and would it be so easy for the Emperor to see your loyal, mechanical son who boasted about his logic and excellence was so emotionally immature that his jealousy at Dorn would lead him to betray you, this general who killed his own sons and used conscripts, but never *publicly* or directly so much as asked for redeployment? I agree with you entirely about Russ, and think your comment is part of what makes the event great. It's entirely different perspectives. I see the Emperor being foolish to pick Russ for it, but Prospero was something done by Magnus and performed by Russ because of their egos alone. Magnus wanted his secrets and sorcery and to do as he pleased, and he did. The Emperor did not force him to disobey, to destroy his Webway Project, to capitulate by not speaking then fight, nor to forsake him for Tzeench and then reject him again at Terra. Magnus made so many choices with the confidence that he was wiser, well-intentioned, that the thralls and the deceit was acceptable losses. Exactly like Russ. That's the horrible thing about it, and I honestly think it could have been easy for the reverse to happen and Magus have destroyed Fenris for the Emperor.
@inquisitorgarza3122 жыл бұрын
The Tragedy of Magnus the Red is that while he truly wanted the best for humanity with the emergence of those individuals who could use the powers of the Warp, and sought to master these powers for the betterment of mankind, but it was arrogance that plunged him to the arms of the Chaos Gods. His arrogance came to himself believe he and his sons were able to master their powers and believed that even mortal beings could do so as well, but the truth is that the Warp is a slow corruption that affects the individuals souls without them knowing it.

Such a good event series. Nobody has covered the battle of Prospero so well. I still think a swap of Russ for Sanguinius or the Lion would have resulted in Magnus and his legion going to Terra instead of a battle. This would have made Horus options at treachery almost nothing and without the Emperor stuck on the Throne he could use Magnus to hold the gate while he fixed the tear and then crush Horus with Sanguinius, Lion, Khan, Guilliman, Ferrus, Vulkan, Corax and his Custodes and Imperial Household. Leaving half his Custodes, the Fists and Dorn, Russ as a watch dog for Magnus and his sons on Terra.

Some things get lost, but often it's most beneficial to hide something. Take Iron Warriors...better loyalists than traitors, telling the Silver Skulls/Minotaurs/Scythes of the Emperor the truth and you detract from their ability and independence (IOM hilariously cares more than Pert). Blood Ravens are a mystery with more potency unexplained. Does it matter so much who their Primarch is? Magnus, Corax, the best thing about them is their personality (remaining loyal or turning) and their own culture. The Chapter rock because it's not a retread of the First Founding. You have the heavy psyker aspect, the Gabriel aspect and the alliances they make. I think the DOW III trailer shows Blood Ravens as so *Imperial* that tying them to a Primarch would steal their spotlight.

Thank you for your wonderful work! Can't wait for what's next! (Whatever that is. My chronology of the Heresy is a bit fuzzy. It should be Sanguinius fighting Khorne and the Blood Angels getting the Red Thrist, right?)

Can someone explain to me what he's talking about at 48:00? The Thousands Sons aren't real? Ahriman was the only survivor of the burning? The rest are warp entities or something?
@Subject_Keter2 жыл бұрын
Some think Ahriman was chosen to be Tzeentech Champion and the rest were consumed and now serve the Tzeentech as their numbers were bolstered. I am not sure, never heard that idea before seems like what someone would think after finding a rubicon marine armor cracked open and dust pouring out.

I've always wondered if Magnus was really the one to make a deal with Chaos. That he perhaps had been made an offer, rejected it to fight Russ and in so losing the battle one of his sons made the deal in desperation; betraying Magnus. Guess we'll never know for sure.
@Subject_Keter2 жыл бұрын
I think when Mags made his deal to bust through Emperor psi wall, it was in the "contract" persay to claim Magnus truly.

Censure Host: specificially tailored task force where BASIC unit was FULL Astartes legion with additional exterminatus grade weapon. Having as second in command Captain General of Imperium's most experienced force EVER. Gets worn, bogged down and almost fought to the stalemate by single legion and unprepared auxilia of loyal imperial citizens. Censured force ultimately escapes, albeit with heavy looses. Really.... Guiliman would have done better job.

While there are deep and intense reasons and lore backing for why Leman would undeniably be the victor, and long reams of information to support why, I feel the reason for his eventual victory over Magnus can be summed up in a single sentence; Football jock vs computer science nerd. Simple as it may be, it still serves the purpose.
@Subject_Keter2 жыл бұрын
Feels cheap and wouldnt even be mad if Khrone hampered Magnus so Tzeentch could claim his Action Figure. Magnus only loses due to Anti Pysker defenses being wiped out or a stronger pysker, it "works" but it strange like how Russ feels guilty DESPITE literally loving massarcing anything that moved on thecsurface.
