CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Cable Guy (Jim Carrey) takes Steven (Matthew Broderick) to Medieval Times, an elaborate dinner theater.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Originally planned as a silly vehicle for Chris Farley, in the hands of director Ben Stiller and star Jim Carrey, The Cable Guy became an opportunity for Carrey to flex some of his darker comedic muscles as stalker Chip Douglas. Matthew Broderick plays Steven, an average Joe who is forlorn over his recent breakup with girlfriend Robin (Leslie Mann). When he moves into a new apartment, Steven comes in contact with Chip, who shows up to hook up the cable. Before he knows it, and whether he likes it or not, Steven has a new best-friend in the obnoxious and clingy Chip. However, Steven soon learns that obnoxious is a walk in the park compared to Chip's behavior when Steven tells him he doesn't want to be his pal anymore. What's worse, no one -- including Robin or his family -- believes Steven when he accuses the seemingly harmless Chip of being a malevolent menace. George Segal and Jack Black also star along with Stiller, who plays twins loosely-based on the Menendez brothers.

This film helped Jack Black expand his career and he would become a major star as the years went by. Janeane Garofalo would go on to star in underrated movies like Cop Land and Mystery Men. You even got to see Charles Napier appear in this film. The Cable Guy showed the darker side of Jim Carrey and he would go on to expand on these more serious elements in his more dramatic film roles.

It was criticized because he wasn’t an Ace Ventura or Fire Marshall Bill character type. Dark comedy where Jim displayed more depth to his character than other films. You get the jist of it at the beginning when it shows him as a kid watching TV as his so-called mother is leaving the house to go out whoring around every night. He understood the TV was the baby sitter. That set up everything else in this film to be believable.

Robin noticed that Steven was a smotherer and kicked him out of her house. They seemed to get back together out of pity for Steven....The ONLY weird things she did was allow some Cable Guy into her house without confirming anything herself and later standing up for Chip and turning on Steven(But in that scene, Steven's family Members were being nicer to Chip than Steven despite Steven's OBVIOUSLY being uncomfortable with Chip.

Main reason is that it was marketed as a fun comedy because that's how Carrey was perceived due to his prior work. What people actually got was a comedy with a significant dark thriller element and that dissonance. However, when you take the film for what it is, I'd rank it only behind Dumb and Dumber for Carrey's 90s comedy work.

It was poorly marketed as another Jim Carry haha movie for the kiddos. When the audiences got a dark aurtur comedy satirizing American culture and entertainment, with strong themes of mental illness, consumerism, and depression it flew over viewers' heads with a resounding, "WHOOSH!" Almost the opposite of nostalgia, revisiting this film that deeply troubled me as a child, I came to appreciate it as nothing less than an absolutely brilliant piece of cult cinema. The story, cast, acting, humor, and direction was so on-point and memorable.

No, it rated just about right. As far as being "marketed as a Jim Carrey haha movie to kids" goes, it wasn't. Nearly everyone in this movie was hopelessly miscast, misdirected and misused.

I wouldn't go that far, but it's so over the top and silly that it even made Broderick crack... Cause it doesn't even look like Hannibal! It took so long to balance that stupid chicken meat/skin... It's so gross... Yet he does the voice ~so well~ in juxtaposition to the ridiculous "mask". Love me some Jim Carrey.
