STORY
Gail Seymour Halvorsen was a senior officer and command pilot in the United States Air Force. He is best known as the "Berlin Candy Bomber" or "Uncle Wiggly Wings" and gained fame for dropping candy to German children during the Berlin Airlift from 1948 to 1949.

THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

@Janice Blasingame…so sorry for your loss. I’m sure your son made a difference and brightened the lives of those children. My husband tells of doing something similar when he was stationed in Lebanon as a young Marine. He would get care packages from his Mom & sister with cookies, candy, chewing gum, etc. Those little smiling faces would be waiting to greet him at the fence. It is those that have the least that appreciate even the smallest of things the most. ~Renee Poulin~

What a touching story about an incredible man Ron. Giving those german children that gum and how they conducted themselves even though they must have been so hungry. What he managed to achieve. More candy drops. A fabulous story and how happy all those children must have been. Operation Little Vittles. Fantastic. Humanity at it's best. A beautiful cemetery in a beautiful location. God bless Col Gail Halvorsen. Rest in peace you dear man. Thank you for telling us this story Ron. Best wishes.

0:34 and 1:33 Huge trees and so beautiful. 1:00 Mountains are so beautiful. 8:27 Oh my goodness! It is this guy! My Mom told me about him. What a thoughtful guy. There is no telling how much this gesture meant to all these kids. It might have been the one glimmer of kindness that gave them hope to hang in there and survive despite all the sadness and fear and depression. I love what this guy did. I remember seeing film of Audie Murphy and his fellow airmen were handing out chocolate bars to a bunch of kids, and even that made me think of this guy, the Candy Bomber, and of this story Mom told me about so many years ago about him dropping out chocolate bars and candy bars to the kiddos. I love this story, Ron. I never knew his name until now and thus, I had no idea he was still alive up until Feb 2022. I am glad he lived a long life. It does sound like complications from COVID. God bless him. God bless you. I love the stories you do. Definitely makes me cry that he has passed away.

That cemetery looks beautiful with the Mountains is the background. I saw a video interview with Col. Gail Halvorsen, and he went to his co-pilots and other service men who donated gum, and chocolate candy, and it grew from there. Even lots of single women sent and donated their hanker chiefs to him to be used as parachutes. He was a true American hero to lots of German children no doubt. His story makes you proud to be an American, and it brings a tear to your eye too. Rest in Peace Colonel Gail Halvorsen. 😢

I just love your videos. I think my interest in cemeteries comes from spending so much time at my grandparents home in paradise township, Pennsylvania. They lived on meetinghouse rd, in Thomasville. Wasn't much to do out there, so I spent a lot of time wandering around at Altlands Meetinghouse, which was unused, but the doors were open. The graves in the cemetary date back to 1775, but the meetinghouse wasn't built until 1853, and rebuilt after a big storm in 1880. It was really creepy when the ground was wet, and you'd accidentally step on an unmarked grave. The ground would sometimes sink, because the wooden coffins were decayed. I loved the peace I felt there. My grandparents are gone now, and the house my pappaw built was sold long ago. It was the only house on the road when I was a little girl, and there are more around there now. But I still look it up on Google earth every now and then. Maybe I need to go visit the family graves this Easter. Yeah. I'm definitely going to plan that. Thanks for the inspiration!

GREAT GREAT MAN, blessed and loved!!! My dad was 5 years old when he and his little friends waited for this winged blessing to fly over Berlin, Flughafen /Airport Tempelhof, and bring hope to so many Berliners! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ He was the human side to war, and like always, in a dictatorship and reign of terror, there were actually more people frightened into keeping their heads on their shoulders than those who were really going for a war and killing. Unfortunately up to this very day, bullies - also political bullies - usually reign the world ... 😞 LOVE and BLESSINGS to this beloved man and all those who helped. Love from Berlin Germany ♥️🤗🙏🇩🇪
